The fund drive is upon us and not a moment too soon. If only everyone who listens to this marvelous station put something into the pot, we would be whole. Each morning, I will do my best to make the argument that if you listen and contribute, you should do something and the drive would be over. We really could do it on the first day. When we raised money for the New Orleans people who got hit by Hurricane Katrina, we made over a half a million dollars in just a few hours so we know that we could do most of it in a day. People love the fund drives. More people listen during fund drives than at any other time. It’s the ultimate community building event. It kills me when someone writes or calls and says that they won’t give until we shorten the fund drives.
I was exhausted for weeks after the last drive, but I really do love hearing from all of you and seeing the community that is WAMC come together. People always stop me and ask what they can do to help. Well, here are just a few ideas. If you know

Happy Autumn, WAMC Land!
This is my favorite time of year. As the days grow cooler, the northeast offers us its bounty of apples and pumpkins and the wee ones run rampant, high on sugar and special treats.
By now you know we are in our fall fund drive, which began October 1st. Now there are some special goings on during the drive, the Presidential and Vice Presidential debates. The first debate is on Wednesday Oct. 3rd and from 9PM – 11PM we’ll have special coverage from NPR. We will be bringing you the entire debate with a half-hour analysis directly following it. President Obama and Governor Romney will be tackling domestic policy in the first debate. The only Vice Presidential debate will be the following Thursday, October 11th also from 9PM – 11PM and VP Biden and Congressman Ryan with debate foreign and domestic policy. The following two weeks will bring us back to the Presidential candidates. Tuesday, October 16th will be in the form of a town meeting, and the final debate on Monday, October 22nd will focus on foreign policy.
If you’re feeling a little inundated with politics, do not fear. We have a lot of other fabulous programming to tantalize your ears. To make sure you get your Moth Radio Hour fix, we’ll be postponing the episode that usually airs the first Friday of the month to Friday, Oct 12th. (So let’s get this Fund Drive done ASAP to make sure we can hear it!!) The following Friday at 1PM we’ll have an encore presentation of Paul Simon: Songwriter. We had so many requests to hear it

someone who listens and thinks that the station is an important part of their life and who may have someextra money, it would be great if you could ask them to make a challenge. Everyone who has ever heard a drive knows that challenges excite people. If someone calls up and says “I’ll give you a thousand dollars if you can make five thousand in a half an hour,” the skies open up. Maybe it’s the ultimate game show. Maybe it’s an athletic event, but whatever it is, it works. So, if you really want to take some of the load, and if you really love the station, it would be great if you could make some calls and encourage people to do whatever they can. Ditto, if you could call your friends and remind them how important this radio station is in their lives.
You could invoke your geography and call up and say, “This is from Jean from Olive Bridge. Where are you, all you Olive Bridgeans?” Somehow that seems to work, too. If you are a teacher and use what you hear on WAMC in your classroom, give us a call and stick up for teachers who have been so maligned. If your life has been changed by one Vox Pop or Medical Monday, you’ll want to put something in. You know that we’ve been there for you and I know that you’ll be there to keep this precious resource going. In the end, this is a community of like minded people who value excellence.
We have an election coming. The Republicans in Congress have been trying to shut down the public money for public radio. Sooner or later, they will win. It’s really not that much (about 10%) but it will be tough to do without. As it is now, a few people will own most of the newspapers and radio stations in this country. You can see this is a life or death proposition. The quest for a station that will call it down the middle continues. You’ll hear a lot of Democrats and a lot of Republicans in their own words. You’ll hear investigative stories and stories that will make you cry. Just try asking yourself what your life would be like without WAMC and then join in the effort.
I am asking for your help. We can’t do it without you and I mean you. Thanks for anything you can do. I love and trust you. – Alan

WAMC Live at the Linda - BroadcastsWednesdays at 8pm on WAMC
10/3 – Live at the Linda will not be heard so that we may bring you all the action from the WAMC Fund Drive.
10/10 – Dancing on the Air - Live performance radio with Jay Ungar and Molly Mason. NOTE: May be preempted by WAMC Fund Drive.
10/17 – Michael Daves / Dan Johnson(Recorded at the Linda 4/7/2012)
Heralded as “a leading light of the New York bluegrass scene” by the New York Times, Daves has garnered attention for his work with Steve Martin, TonyTrischka, and Rosanne Cash in addition to his solo performances.
10/24 – Chandler Travis Philharmonic /Pete LaBonne (Recorded on 4/13/2012)
Late in 1996, Travis found himself fronting a nine-piece band, the modestly monikered Chandler Travis Philharmonic -probably the world’s only alternative dixieland / omnipop band. Their debut CD, “Let’s Have a Pancake”, was released in 2000 after his second solo effort, 1999’s “Ivan in Paris”, and four more “official” Philharmonic albums followed “.
10/31 – Albany Symphony Orcehstra(Recorded 9/22/2012)Opening Night: You can't look much further than the names of Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky for great music! Two incredible blockbusters in one amazing concert that will move you with some of the most tender, most compassionate and beautiful music ever written. With pianist Valentina Lisitsa.

Philanthropy: Explore the benefits of donating appreciated assets to charity
By Thomas E. BrockleySenior Vice President – Financial AdvisorSenior Portfolio Manager – Portfolio FocusCourtesy of RBC Wealth Management
Since you tune in for the wide range of interesting programming available on WAMC, you likely understand the value of public radio. You may even donate during the pledge drives – or enjoy the convenience of being a sustaining member.
Either way, you probably know from first-hand experience that giving to charity is not only personally satisfying, you may receive a tax break via a charitable deduction.
But did you know that if your gift consists of shares of stock or other securities that have increased in value, you may enjoy several additional benefits? It may help eliminate your capital gains tax exposure, reduce your taxable estate and remove potential future growth of the donated assets from your taxable estate.
Gifting highly appreciated assets to charity When you donate stock or other assets classified as “intangible long-term capital gain property” to a qualifiedpublic charity, you can deduct the full Fair Market Value (FMV) of the property to the extent that it does not exceed 30 percent of your Adjusted Gross Income. Any amount that cannot be deducted in the current year can be carried over and deducted for up to five succeeding years.
For example, let’s say you donate stock with a cost basis of $10,000 and a current FMV of $50,000 to a public charity and that your AGI for the year is $100,000.
That means the maximum deduction for the present year is $30,000 (30 percent of $100,000), leaving the balance – or $20,000 – available for a deduction on next year’s return. You avoid paying capital gains tax on the $40,000 appreciation in value, should you sell the stock. You also reduce your taxable estate by $50,000 in the year the gift is given and remove potential growth of these assets from your taxable estate.
If you wish to donate highly appreciated assets to charity, however, it is important to make sure you understand all relevant rules. Also, certain types of property may be more advantageous to donate to charity than others. For help making well informed decisions, speak with your financial advisor and tax professional about your investment objectives and charitable goals.
RBC Wealth Management does not provide tax or legal advice. All decisions regarding the tax or legal implications of your investments should be made in connection with your independent tax or legal advisor.
