DEFINITIONS:

concern for the preservation, restoration, or improvement of the nature environment, such as conservation of natural resources, prevention of pollution and certain land use actions.

HISTORY:• First - Bishnois of Rajasthan – 400 years

ago – death of the villagers – to defy cutting trees in the village.

• Modern environmentalism – 19th century. Developed by John Muir and Henry David Thoreau.

• 20th century-growing popularity recognition

ENVIRONMENTAL MOVEMENT

• Is a diverse scientific, social, political movement.

• Centered on ecology, health, and human rights.

• Represented by a range of organizations, from large to grassroots.

POPULAR ENVIRONMENTALISM

These environmentally conscious types take special pride in their

sustainable consumption patterns, shopping at grocery stores that trumpet earth-friendliness and

buying top-dollar organic products.

DARK GREENS AND LIGHT GREENS

• Light greens

• More popular and more famous and public environmental groups such as Greenpeace, Friends o the Earth and the Sierra Club.

• Do not follow environmentalism as a distinct political ideology, but rather seek greater environmental emphasis within existing ideologies such as Conservatism, Socialism, or Liberalism.

• Dark Greens• Much more radical than light greens• Tend to believe that all the current political

ideologies are corrupt• Naturally lead to environmental degradation

as they do not view mankind as part of the environment but rather as a higher form of life with the right to take what it wants from the environment.

• Can be global, regional, national or local

• Can be government-run or private (NGO)
