2. President’s Report
Andrew Hutcheon When one is immersed in progress, it is often hard for us to tell how far we have come, or how much things have changed in the past year, or even whether the path we are on is any good. It has, for example, only been 5 years since we split Perth Ultimate League into two divisions. 2011‐2012 may, in some ways, seem like it has had less improvement than some previous years, but it helps to consider it as part of a general improvement and growth of Ultimate in WA. More on this shortly, first though, some of the achievements in 2011‐2012:
The coaching visit from Brodie Smith.
Continued growth of player numbers, especially in school participation.
New leagues getting started: South of the River League, the separate gender league. New office and storage facility at Murdoch University.
Continued employment of Development Officer Anna Haynes.
As always, it is the volunteers who continue to provide the lifeblood of our sport and this year special mention should go to the ever multi‐tasking committee (Geri, Kyal, Glen, Sarah, Minh), to the club organisers and league team captains, to the tournament organisers and league directors (esp. superman David Shackles for running two straight Perth Ultimate Leagues and Indoor Championships) and to our ever larger coaching corps for providing their time, especially to schools. A special thanks must also go to our Development Officer, Anna Haynes, for her continued professional support of the association. I write this report from Ottawa, Canada, after a recent move. This is a place with more teams in
Ultimate leagues than we have players, and it took the Ottawa‐Carleton association twenty years to go from a handful of teams like ours to where they are today with thousands of players across the metro region (a metro region with just over half the amount of people as Perth). This growth was planned, and the process carefully watched and cultivated to amend or avoid problems. This is the future of Ultimate in WA too, but only if we take the same care and attention that OCUA did. We need patience, and we need to keep finding the new players and volunteers that will drive this growth. We may need to break some old habits too, if we really want to make Ultimate one of WA’s bigger sports. To make this bright future a reality, we need volunteers especially. If haven’t already, please consider helping out with your team, your club or with the association – while it might seem less fun than just playing, the rewards are much greater than just being on the field. Since it will be a while until I’m back in the WA mix, I would like to take a quick moment to thank everyone who I’ve worked with on the committee over the years. It’s been a great experience, and I look forward to seeing what’s next in WA Ultimate. Cheers, Andrew ‘Hutch’ Hutcheon

3. Financial Report
Anna Haynes In 2011/2012 growing numbers of league participants, more tournaments, increasing presence in schools and increased disc sales, employee costs have made an impact on our financial situation. The Association continues to keep healthy stock levels of discs with resale value. Improved relationships with schools and sports stores have assisted with appropriate equipment distribution. Ongoing improved accounting procedures using MYOB Software has improved the Associations methods for financial reporting and tracking vendor and customer accounts. We have significant price increases in regards to filed hire and players insurance costs and will we will need adjust our fees to manage this. Grants received: DSR (Annual Grant) $10000.00 DSR (Coach in Resident Grant Youth Development) $2600.00 AFDA (Employee Assistant Grant) $7500.00 Closing balances as at June 30 2012
Society Account: $2 295.21
Savings Account: $6 494.53
Net loss for the year ($34, 015.18)
The most significant factor in upcoming expenditure is that the WA Flying Disc Association now has an employee but with a funding increase from the Department of Sport and Recreation we will see our accounts return to a positive cash flow status in the next six months.

7. Youth & Inclusion Officer Report
Kyal Oh
Over the past year and my first time on the
board, I have learnt a lot about WAFDA and AFDA
and the way we work. It has been an exciting year
for me as I have accomplished various aims that I
set for myself.
I have attended many primary and high schools
to conduct coaching sessions and deliver the
skills of ultimate to kids of various ages. A major
project that I was involved in was at Guildford
Grammar High school. The students were
required to learn the skills and rules of ultimate,
be able to play and be able to coach the sport. At
the end of the project they were assessed on not
only individual skills but their ability to teach
others using the GSWAP principles.
In 2011, I attended the AFDA conference, where
many topics were discussed over a two day
period. This was a major learning experience for
me and I was very grateful to attend and have the
opportunity to learn. I picked up many great tips
and ideas from the three development officers
from WA, NSW and Victoria.
This helped with vital project development
planning with other high school opportunities
around Perth, and I’ve set my sights and aims to a
higher level. One of my vital roles is to provide
support to the WA Development Officer
whenever needed and help with anything I can.
This year was a big year for me and the next I am
hoping will be bigger and better for the whole of
WA Ultimate.
8. Development Officer Report
The intention of this development position is to
increase the number of people playing Ultimate
in WA by increasing the awareness of flying disc
sports in the wider community, provide in‐school
coaching sessions, running coaching courses,
expanding support in regional areas and
providing administrative support to the
Association’s key volunteers.
With the support of accredited coaches including
Steve Baker, Kyal Oh, Andrew Hutcheon and
Andrew Jennings we are now able to deliver
more school sessions in more suburbs than ever
before. School sessions are important in raising
the awareness of Ultimate as an ideal sport for all
ages and every session brings us closer to the
goal of having a youth competition equivalent to
our senior competitions now on offer.

Regional opportunities are now a reality and we
are able to service a wider area in remote
communities allowing us to demonstrate the
benefits of Ultimate to a whole new audience.
In addition to school sessions we have been able
to deliver professional development sessions to
school physical education teachers looking to
introduce a new sport into their school.
As the Development Officer, I can invest time in
extending our promotion of the sport. Currently
new brochures and resource CDs have been
distributed to local schools. Having a dedicated
staff member allows not only our Association to
be available to provide more support but also
provides physical presence at events like Tertiary
Sports WA competitions involving our university
clubs and school sports days like the competition
planned for term four with several schools
affiliated with the Associated Catholic Colleges of
WA.
In September 2011 we took another step forward
as an organisation and moved into an office. WA
Ultimate now has a head office located within the
Sport and Recreation Office and Murdoch
University. This location is now the home of
Ultimate here in WA and provides not only a
storage facility for the Association’s equipment
but provides a professional home base for daily
operations.
A few highlights include; WA now having 52
accredited coaches, the Associated and Catholic
Colleges have now increased their interschool
Ultimate competition to 2 of their zones
(involving 8 high schools) and we have a local
sports store stocking and selling WA Ultimate
Ultra‐star discs, and a new club has formed in the
Peel region.
In October 2011 along with Kyal Oh and Andrew
Jennings we travelled down to Bunbury to run a
Development Day for the south west club. A full
day was dedicated to throwing, throwing
extensions, offense and defense tactics and other
disc based games to help support and develop
the Bunbury players.
November was the busiest month on record. I got
to run my first big project as WA Development
Officer – the Brodie Smith Project. The project
was funded by WAFDA and included flying out a
US player to Perth for 16 days to run a series of
development camps and enhance the playing
level of the general WA player‐base. Feedback
received from members was positive and it was a
huge achievement putting it all together and
making it all happen. With thanks to the AFDA
high performance coaches Luisa Fearnside, Matt
Hill and Dan Rule were all able to travel to Perth
and work with Brodie during our first
development camp.
Immediately following this massive project I
headed to Canberra for the AFDA administrator’s
conference with the WA Youth and Inclusion
Officer Kyal Oh. The weekend was dedicated to
sharing best practices, discussed current issues
and planning for the year to come in relation to
Ultimate in Australia.
With just a few days left in November I was
invited to present at the Department of Sport
and Recreation’s 2012 State Clubs Conference in
Western Australian Flying Disc Association (WAFDA) Inc. ABN: 58 689 743 544

Fremantle. Over 200 delegates from the sport
and recreation industry attended this event and
my presentation was for the area of Volunteer
Management. Entitled REAP what you sow with
volunteers. I conducted an interactive workshop
with over 30 delegates using the AFDA volunteer
management program REAP; Recruit, Educate,
Acknowledge, Preserve. The 4 keys areas to
taking care of your volunteers. I received great
feedback and networked with many key
members of the industry whilst flying the flag for
flying disc sports. I have since run similar
workshops for the Shire of Chittering, the City of
Canning and the Cities of Bayswater & Swan. This
provides a great opportunity to share the success
and innovation the AFDA and WAFDA as
organisations has to offer the sport and
recreation industry.
In March 2012 we were successful in gaining
some funding for our first regional project in the
Goldfields. I headed to Kalgoorlie for a week to
teach Ultimate in local primary schools and also
work with the Department of Sport’s Aboriginal
Development Officer for the Goldfields area. We
attended four schools in five days easily teaching
250 kids in the various sessions. With thanks to
the Indigenous Ultimate Association we were
able to supply discs that will be used to promote
and play Ultimate in remote Aboriginal
communities. Many Perth players donated their
jerseys for the cause too and we had all the
players really looking the part and loving their
Ultimate experience.
