1 1UTRAN introduction
Overview
Purpose
This chapter contains a summarized UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN)
introduction.
The UTRAN is composed of at least one Radio Network Subsystem (RNS). An RNS
covers a certain geographical area. It is equivalent to the GSM BSS. Each RNS is
composed of one Radio Network Controller (RNC) and one or more Node Bs. RNSs are
interconnected through the Iur interface of each RNC to form a network.

Alcatel-Lucent UTRAN
The Alcatel-Lucent UTRAN solution is based on the following components:
RNC
Node B
WMS for the OAM part
RNC
The Alcatel-Lucent RNC is 3GPP-compliant. It is based on the Multiservice Switch
platform.
RNC main functions
The main functions of the RNC are to control and manage:
Radio Access Network (RAN)
Signaling between Core Network (CN) components and Radio Network System
(RNS)
Node Bs and their radio resources
RNC interfaces
The RNC provides the following interfaces:
Iub towards a Node B
Iu towards the Core Network
Iur towards another RNC
Iupc towards an Standalone A-GPS SMLC (SAS)
Node B
The Alcatel-Lucent Node Bs are 3GPP-compliant. The Alcatel-Lucent Node B portfolio
includes:
Conventional base stations

WMS
The Wireless Management System (WMS) delivers an integrated UMTS management
platform through which all Network Elements (NE) can be monitored and controlled.
It plays an important role in providing the foundation of a complete end-to-end
management solution for UMTS networks. The WMS manages the entire UMTS
network, which is divided into:
The UTRAN
The Core Network (circuit-switched and packet-switched networks)
Access Network OAM main functions
The Access Network OAM manages the UTRAN part of the network.
The main functions of Access Network OAM are the following:
Fault management
Configuration management
Performance management
NSP
The Network Services Platform (NSP) is a graphical user interface to the Access Network
providing a common platform for navigation and control. The NSP interfaces with NEs
through a Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA). This
vendor-independent architecture links computer applications across different networks.
MOCN
The Multi-Operator Core Network (MOCN) is a Network Sharing feature specified in
3GPP, provides a way for the Core Network operators to share one Radio Access
Network.
The MOCN has the following features:
Each cell can be shared by up to four operators
Amix of shared and non shared cells is supported within the RNS
The Figure 1-2, Multi-Operator Core Network (p. 1-5) describes an example of
UTRAN sharing, MOCN, and non shared zones in a network shared by two operators A
and B:

In Figure 1-2, Multi-Operator Core Network (p. 1-5), each operator owns one carrier
(operator A owns f1, operator B owns f2) and a third carrier (f3) is shared by the two
operators:
In the first shared area, the three carriers are deployed in shared Node B: f1 and f2 in
UTRAN Sharing and f3 in MOCN
In the second shared area, only f1 and f2 are deployed in UTRAN sharing
The third area is non shared. RNC and Node B belong to operator B
Each location area has a dedicated LAC. Location area belongs to a PLMN (LAI =
PLMN + LAC), the same LAC could be used in different location areas belonging to
different operators. For example, PLMN B could use LAC 100 instead of LAC 300 even
if LAC 100 is already used by PLMNA for another location area.

WCE
The 9771 Wireless Cloud Element (WCE) uses the cloud and virtualized technology and
combines the Radio Network products into one unified manageable package that provides
a flexible, scalable, and customized wireless platform solution. The 9771 WCE hosts the
UMTS RNC, which is called a tenant.
The 9771 WCE supports traditional central office deployment or exiting data center
technology with the ability to manage runtime software processes across multiple
hardware processors. The following figure illustrates an example of a telecommunications
network incorporating the cloud technology.
In addition, the 9771 WCE can accommodate a range of capacity varying from small to
very large systems distributing the processing across the data servers for an efficient
resource use.

TRDU introduction
The TRDU module is a combination of three UMTS modules:
Transceiver Receiver Module (TRM): Transmit and receive RF low level functions,
transmit and receive digital base band functions
Multi-Carrier Power Amplifier (MCPA): Transmit multi carrier RF power
amplification
Dual Duplexer Module (DDM): RF front end functions (transmit and receive
duplexers/filters and low noise receive amplification)
The TRDU module is a complete UMTS Radio Equipment designed to operate in full
UMTS FDD Band I (2100/1900 MHz). It manages functionalities between base band
Common Public Radio Interface (CPRI) and Radio Frequency (RF) air interface.
There are three variants of the TRDU module, according to the output power and number
of frequency carriers::
TRDU40-21 delivers 40W nominal composite output power at antenna port (45W at
module level), and supports up to two adjacent frequency carriers at 10 MHz
instantaneous bandwidth:
40W x 1 frequency carrier
20W x 2 frequency carriers
TRDU60-21 and TRDU60-21B deliver 60W nominal composite output power at
module level, and supports up to four adjacent frequency carriers at 20 MHz
instantaneous bandwidth:
60W x 1 frequency carrier
30W x 2 frequency carriers
20W x 3 frequency carriers
15W x 4 frequency carriers
The TRDU 60-21 supports also any non contiguous carriers arrangement such as 101,
1001, 1101 configuration.
The following figure shows a front view of the TRDU sub-rack fully equipped with six
TRDUs, two TRDU ICO modules and one TRCU.
