The Beginning of ‘Powering for Better
Brighter Future’
VOLUME 5, ISSUE 2/ ISSN 1985-4854
On 23 and 24 April 2014, UNITEN held its own research exposition,
UNIREX’14, organized by Innovation and Research Management Centre
(iRMC) UNITEN with theme ‘Powering for Better Brighter Future'. It
served as a platform for UNITEN researchers to share their research
findings and it is the very first event in UNITEN history. In UNIREX’14,
112 products were exhibited and they are from 7 categories across vari-
ous academic disciplines. This event witnessed the presence of The
Chief Executive Officer of TNB, YBhg. Datuk Seri Ir Azman Bin Mohd. In
his welcoming speech, he mentioned that he was impressed with the
exposition as it serves as a bridge from academia to the industry.
A notable Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between
UNITEN and ENTURA Hydro Tasmania, Australia. ENTURA Hydro Tasma-
nia is a leading Australian company in water or dam engineering and
management and renewable energy. It is noteworthy to highlight
that ENTURA Hydro Tasmania was eminently involved in Bakun Project
in Sarawak and SMART Tunnel in Kuala Lumpur.

A CELEBRATION OF CREATIVITY : UNITEN CLINCHES 34 MEDALS AT ITEX’14
Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) moved another step forward in realizing its W15E Strategic Plan of becoming a research-led university by 2015, by clinching 10 gold, 20 silver and 4 bronze medals at the International Inventions, Innovation and Technology Exhibition 2014 (ITEX’14).
Organised by the Malaysian Invention & Design Society (MINDS) with the appoint-ment of C.I.S Network Sdn. Bhd. as its event manager, ITEX’14 was held for the 25th year on May 8 - 10, celebrating its Silver Jubilee. UNITEN was proud to have taken part in the leading exhibition and shared the joy at the Kuala Lumpur Con-vention Center (KLCC).
An overall of 34 esteemed research teams from College of Engineering (17), Col-lege of Business and Accounting (8), College of Information Technology (7) and College of Foundation and General Studies (2) were sent by UNITEN to participate at ITEX’14. All teams were proud to bring home a total of 10 gold, 20 silver, and 4 bronze medals with their creative and innovative inventions.
Fully sponsored 34 entries, the Innovation & Research Management Center (iRMC) of UNITEN has generously disbursed RM170,000 for decoration, rental and souvenirs at ITEX this year.
The awards are proofs of the university working towards establishing a milieu that begets innovation, creativity, curiosity and boldness. With increasing recognitions and achievements in the international limelight, UNITEN is moving towards its mission in providing exceptional research support that will encourage continuous and enriching research experience in order to become a research-led university in 2015.
UNITEN RESEARCHERS RECEIVE 4 GOLD MEDALS IN INPEX 2014
Four researchers from Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) walked away with 4 Gold Medals at the Invention and New Product Exposition (INPEX) held at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA on 17th to 20th June 2014.
INPEX, the Invention & New Product Exposition, America's largest invention trade show, provides a platform for inventors to exhibit their inventions and attempt to make contacts with companies interested in licensing, marketing or manufacturing new products. The 29th Invention Show was held on June 17-20, 2014 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Lariyah Mohd Sidek from COE and her team bagged a gold medal for the product: GENIUS – Integrated Green Technology for Sustainable Infrastructure. The second gold medal was seized by Hidayah Basri from COE and her team for the invention: INSPiRE: Interactive Dam Safety Decision Support Tools.
Besides, Nor Hazwani Nor Khalid and her team won a gold medal for the product: Excellent Real Time In-situ Slope Monitoring System (ERIMS). Dr. Fathoni from COE and his team won the fourth gold medal for the invention VEAS – Value Engineering Advisory System for Building Construction.
With the winning of these 4 Gold Medals, UNITEN has further mapped itself globally and its products internationally recognized. The 2014 edition of INPEX Invention & New Product Exposition attracted 1500 inventors from the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, China, Malaysia, Romania, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE, Poland, Britain, Singapore, Iran, Turkey and other countries.
