Voluspa 21-26: Who is Gullveig-Heid?
by William P. Reaves
Before moving on, I want to look back. Now is a good time to reflect
on the witch Gullveig-Heid. I believe she has already appeared inVoluspa 8, as the "three giantesses" who bring an end to the Golden
Age and will appear again in verses 40-41 as "the Old One in the
Ironwood" breeding wolves who speed the onslaught of Ragnarok. Like
Odin, she is a central character in this poem, and may even be the
Volva that Odin is consulting here. We know he has consulted her
before in thepoem Baldur's Dreams. That poem identifies her as "the
mother of three monsters".
Since Voluspa 21-26 seems to dwell on her, let's reflect and ask:
Who is Gullveig-Heid?
Professor Jnas Kristjnsson, the former Director of the rni
Magnsson Institute in Reykjavik, which is responsible for the
preservation and study of most of the Old Icelandic manuscripts held
there, in his book "Icelandic Manuscripts: Sagas, History, and Art"
(translated by Jeffrey Cosser; The Icelandic Literary Society, 1996)
writes:
"The narrative of Snorri's Edda is based for the most part on old
mythological poems, in particular Vlusp ("The Sibyl's Prophecy").
Vlusp is a collection of vivid poetic visions, and was probably
rather enigmatic originally; in addition, it was in a poor state of
preservation in Snorri's time. We have to be content with an
imperfect and patchy understanding of the old religion. But this does
not entitle us to assume that the religion itself was correspondingly
8/8/2019 Vlusp 21-26 Who is Gullveig-Heid? By William P. Reaves

primitive or incomplete. We must bear in mind that no extensive
direct information about the pagan religion was recorded until fully
two centuries after the conversion to Christianity, and the
generations which had come and gone meanwhile were, or were supposed
to be, hostile to these pagan heresies."
"It seems an inescapable conclusion that stories told in prose must
always have existed alongside stories told in verse. Many of the
heroic lays are shaped in such a way that it is evident the poets
assumed more knowledge of the subject-matter on the audience's part
than the poems themselves encompass: a whole legend is there as a
backdrop to the verse."
Elizabeth and Paul Barber in "When They Severed Earth from Sky"(2004, Princeton University Press) speak of a phenomenon in myth
relevant to what we are doing here. They write:
"The only time such things that `everyone knows' ever get said us
when we are trying to socialize children. This rule carries over in
the telling of myth. Why waste time saying what everyone knows? Get
on with the informational parts of the story. But what a disaster
those omissions can lead to for the study of myth for we, many
cultures and centuries removed, may not know what the people whose
mythology it is all knew so well and hence did not say. In short: The
Lethe Effect. What is never said may eventually be forgotten
entirely."
It should be obvious from reading Vlusp, and I have cited scholars
who acknowledge it, that the Voluspa poet assumed the audience knew
the stories he was referring to, and knew them well-enough that a
few, short cryptic sentences was all s/he needed to say to invoke
them.

Snorri provides no answers. He doesn't mention Gullveig and makes no
reference to these verses or their content (CR 21-24).
Is the key to understanding this once well-known myth still to be
found? Does any other source make reference to it?
We find another possible reference to Freyja actually having fallen
into giant hands, and there, she is "given" to the Jotuns by a
trusted servant.
As I have presented in previous posts, in Book Seven of Saxo's
history we meet the young hero Otharus (Odr) and his beloved Syritha
(Syr). In these characters, previous scholars have seen Freyja and
her husband Or. Snorri informs us that one of Freyja's many by names
is Syr (Sow) and that Freyja's husband is named Odr. The poem
Hyndluljod speaks of Freyja and Ottar, as lovers. Saxo's Otharus and
Syritha are probably a memory of Odr and Freyja.
In Saxo's story, Syritha is betrayed to the giants by a trusted
handmaiden. Yet the author is not sure if the handmaiden is a woman,
or a man disguised as a woman. This suggests that the handmaiden
might have been of an androgynous nature. In our mythology, we
encounter two androgynous beings in particular: one male and one
female. The female sires children, while the male bears them. They
are the giants Loki and Angrboda.
In Gylfaginning 34, Snorri informs us:
8/8/2019 Vlusp 21-26 Who is Gullveig-Heid? By William P. Reaves
4/30
"Yet more children had Loki. Angrboda was the name of a certain
giantess in Jtunheim, with whom Loki got three children: one was
Fenris-Wolf, the second Jrmungandr-that is the Midgard Serpent,-thethird is Hel. She is half blue-black and half flesh-color (by which
she is easily recognized), and very lowering and fierce."
The poem Hyndluljod may tell us how this unusual pregnancy came about:
40. The wolf did Loki with Angrboda win,And Sleipnir bore he to Svadilfari;
The worst of marvels seemed the one
That sprang from the brother of Byleist (Loki) then.
41. A heart ate Loki; in the embers it lay,
And half-cooked found he the woman's heart;-
With child from the woman Lopt (Loki) soon was,
And thence among men came the monsters all.
Powerful words, often overlooked: Loki ate a half-burnt heart he
found. It was the heart of a woman (the text actually says an `evil
woman'). The heart made him pregnant, and from that pregnancy came
all monsters (flag, sometimes translated as ogresses) in the world.
Surely, this must refer to his birthing of Fenrir, Jormungand and
Hel. The verse immediately before this names Fenrir as the child of
Loki and Angrboda. We know from the sources (many of which are cited
below) that Fenrir produces numerous children like himself.
Although he is male and Angrboda is female, Loki is technically the
mother and Angrboda, probably identical to the `evil woman' whose
half-burnt heart Loki ate, is their father.

emasculated you
upon Thor's ness.
Gudmund can rightly say that Loki was not the "father" of Fenriswolves, because he bore them. Thus, he was "emasculated" and gave
birth to them. The giantess Angrboda, as the seed of the pregnancy,
was the rightful "father". They did not have intercourse in the
normal fashion. Instead, Loki ate the half-burnt heart of the witch,
and was impregnated with her seed. In time, he bore three monsters
into the world.
The verses above inform us that Angrboda (the mother of Fenriswolves) was a giantess and once a "valkyrie" in Odin's hall. In
Volsungasaga chapter 2, we find another giantess there. Here a
giantess, Hrimnir's daughter, acts as maid-servant to Odin's wife,
Frigg.
Volsungasaga, ch. 2 (Jesse Byock tr.):
"Now Rerir took much booty for himself, as well as the woman he
thought most suitable for him. Although they lived together with
intimacy for a long time, they had neither heir nor child. That lack
displeased them both, and they fervently implored the gods that they
might have a child. It is said that Frigg heard their prayers and
told Odin what they asked. Odin was not without resources. He called
one of his wish-maidens, the-daughter of the giant Hrimnir and placed
in her hand an apple, telling her to present it to the king. She took
the apple, assumed the shape of a crow, and flew until she reached
the place where the king was sitting on a mound. She let the apple
fall into the king's lap. He took the apple, suspecting its purpose.
Then he came back from the mound to his men. He visited with the
queen and ate some of the apple. Now there is this to tell, the queen
soon discovered that she was carrying a child"

Thus we learn that a giantess, Hrimnir's daughter was a valkyrie
(wish-maid) in Odin's hall and acted as a maid-servant to Frigg. The
poem Hyndluljod tells us more about her father, the giant Hrimnir. He
is said to have only two children, a son and a daughter.
32. Heid and Hrossthiof were
Hrimnir's children
33. All the Valas are
from Vidolf;
all the soothsayers
from Vilmeidr,all the sorcerers
from Svarthfdi;
all the Jtuns
come from Ymir.
Heid and Hrossthiof (Horse-thief) are the children of the giant
Hrimnir. This statement is joined with the origin of all Valas from
Vidolf. We find the name Heid again associated with a witch in
Voluspa. We shall encounter the name Vidolf again as well as the
investigation continues.
In the Codex Regius arrangement, Voluspa 21-24 reads:
She that war remembers,
the first on earth,
when Gullveig they
with lances pierced,
and in the high ones hall
her burnt,
thrice burnt,

thrice brought her forth,
oft not seldom;
yet she still lives.
Heid they called her,
whithersoer she came,
the well-forseeing Vala:
wolves she tamed,
magic arts she knew,
magic arts practised;
ever was she the joy
of an evil woman.
Then went the powers all
to their judgment-seats,
the all-holy gods,
and thereon held council,
whether the sir should
avenge the crime,
or all the gods
receive atonement.
Broken was the outer wall
of the sirs burgh.
The Vanir, forseeing conflict
tramp or the plains.
Odin cast (his spear),
and mid the people hurled it:
that was the first
warfare in the world.
Then went the powers all
to their judgement-seats,
the all-holy gods,

and thereon held council:
who had all the air
with evil mingled?
or to the Jtun race
Ods maid had given?
There alone was Thor
with anger swollen.
He seldom sits,
when of the like he hears.
Oaths are not held sacred;
nor words, nor swearing,
nor binding compacts
reciprocally made.
Here we learn that Heid is Gullveig, who caused the war between the
Aesir and the Vanir. This corroborates the information derived from
the poem Helgakvida Hundingsbane I above. There a giantess and a
valkyrie in Odin's hall are said to have caused all of the Einherjar
to fight. She was deceitful and mischievous. She was the father of
Fenris wolves.
From Hyndluljod 40-41, we learn that Loki bore children after eating
the half-burnt heart of a witch. Loki is said to have given birth
twice: once to Sleipnir and once to Fenrir, by Angrboda. Hynduljod 41
tells us he became pregnant after eating the half-burnt heart of a
witch, it calls her an "evil woman" a term echoed in Voluspa 22's
account of Heid.
Snorri informs us that Loki and Angrboda had three children, Fenrir,
Jormungand, and "Hel". The last one is half-black herself, perhaps
relating to the half-burnt heart eaten by her father. Thus we can
imagine that Loki found and ate the half-burnt heart each time the
witch was cremated.

When Odin travels to the underworld to get information about Baldur's
death, he rises a dead volva, whom he later identifies as the "mother
of three monsters." When Baldur ultimately dies, the gods summon agiantess from the giant world to push his ship out to sea. Her name
is Hyrrokin, `the one wrinkled by fire" suggesting she too had been
burnt. She arrives on a giant-wolf with snakes as reins. Might this
be a reference to her children Fenrir and the World-serpent
(Jormungand)? Why summon her? Had she served them before? She angers
Thor who raises his hammer to kill her, but the gods stop him. Yet,
in a poetic verse preserved by Snorri, Hyrrokin is listed as one of
the giantesses slain by Thor. Voluspa 26 suggests that Thor slew the
person responsible for giving Freyja to the giants. Is this the same
androgynous servant who betrayed Syritha (Freyja) to giants?
In Volusungasaga, we learn that a giantess, Hrimnir's daughter, was
once a servant of Frigg, Odin's wife. From Hyndluljod, we learn that
Hrimnir's daughter is named Heid. From Voluspa we learn that the gods
burnt Heid (who is Gullveig) in Odin's hall, three times. Thus, we
have placed Heid in Odin's hall as a witch who has been burnt.
Voluspa informs us that Gullveig-Heid was burnt three times. Loki
bore three monsters, "fathered" by Angrboda. From Hyndluljod, we
learn her heart was only half-burnt, and that once eaten it
impregnated Loki, from this birth come "all monsters" in the world.
Loki gave birth to the Fenris wolf, who is one of three monsters.
Fenrir has numerous progeny who can rightly be called flagd,
monsters. We notice that sometimes Loki is called the mother, and
Angrboda the sire; and sometimes Angrboda is called the mother. This
gender-confusion is intentional, and echoes Saxo's confusion about
whether Syritha (Freyja's) servant was a woman, or a man in disguise
of a woman.
From Voluspa, we gather that the burning of this witch, not once, but
three times, caused a war between the gods. Similarly, Helgakvida

Hundingsbane says that the mother of Fenris wolves caused all of
the "Einherjar" to fight with one another. Grimnismal informs us that
Odin takes half of the Einherjar (the heroes fallen in battle) and
Freyja takes the other half. If the Aesir go to war with the Vanir,
logically their respective Einherjar (Odin's vs. Freyja's) would
support them.
In Voluspa, we find yet another giantess who is associated with
Fenris wolves. She is said to breed them in the Ironwood. The
Hauksbok version of Voluspa places these verses occur immediately
before the Gullveig-Heid verses, perhaps suggesting a link between
them in the poet's mind. Like Angrboda, and the volva in Helgi
Hundingsbani I, she breeds more Fenris wolves, including Hati who
shall devour the moon. Voluspa says:
East sat the crone,
in Irnvidir (Ironwood),
Fenrirs progeny:
of all shall be
one especially
the moon's devourer,
in a troll's semblance.
He is sated with the last breath
of dying men;
the gods' seat he
with red gore defiles:
swart is the sunshine then
for summers after;
all weather turns to storm.
Understand ye yet, or what?
There on a height sat,
striking a harp,
the giantess's watch,
the joyous Egdir;
by him crowed,
in the bird-wood,

12/30
the bright red cock,
which Fialar hight.
The final verse quoted above informs us that giantess (probablyidentical to "the old one in the Ironwood") has a "watch" (a
Shepherd) associated with her. He sits on a mound playing a harp,
just before Ragnarok. His name indicates that he is guarding an
object. His name Eggthir means "sword-watcher". Notably, the giant
Eggthir (Egtherus) also appears in the seventh book of Saxo
immediately before the episode involving Ottar and Syritha, although
not directly connected with it. Did Saxo know a source that
associated the two or is this simply another lucky coincidence?
So we gather that the giantess Gullveig-Heid-Angrboda after her
unsuccessful burning is exiled in the east, she is found there as
an "old crone" who breeds Fenris-wolves in the Ironwood. Nearby is a
shepherd whose name means sword-guardian. According to Thidreks Saga
of Bern, Eggthir is the brother of Vidolf, the sire of all Volvas,
mentioned immediately after Hrimnir's children in Hyndljlod.
Hrimnir's daughter, Heid, as we know had once been a maid-servant in
Asgard.
So how well was this story known? We see that the poet's refer to it
briefly and cryptically, demonstrating that the heathen audience knew
it well. What may surprise you, however, is that it also seems to
appear in historical works:
Both the Gothic historian Jordanes and the Roman historian Tacitus
had heard of such creatures, as those said to be Fenrir's children,
living in the far east or north, the same direction of the Ironwood.:
Tacitus, in Germania 43, says: "What further accounts we have are
fabulous (from fables, stories, myths) as that the Hellusians and

Oxiones have the countenances and aspect of men, with the bodies and
limbs of savage beasts. This, as a thing about which I have no
certain information, I shall leave untouched."
Tacitus had heard of Germanic tribes on the far northern outskirts of
Germania, who have the bodies of men, but the limbs of savage
beasts. He doesn't believe it, but reports it anyway. Not very
explicit, I know, but we get another historical account of such
people, who also have a "fabulous" origin:
Jordanes XXIV (121): But after a short space of time, as Orosius
relates, the race of the Huns, fiercer than ferocity itself, flamed
forth against the Goths. We learn from old traditions that their
origin was as follows: Filimer, king of the Goths, son of Gadaric the
Great, who was the fifth in succession to hold the rule of the Getae
after their departure from the island of Scandza,--and who, as we
have said, entered the land of Scythia with his tribe,--found among
his people certain witches, whom he called in his native tongue
Haliurunnae. Suspecting these women, he expelled them from the midst
of his race and compelled them to wander in solitary exile afar from
his army. (122) There the unclean spirits, who beheld them as they
wandered through the wilderness, bestowed their embraces upon them
and begat this savage race, which dwelt at first in the swamps,--a
stunted, foul and puny tribe, scarcely human, and having no language
save one which bore but slight resemblance to human speech. Such was
the descent of the Huns who came to the country of the Goths."
Here, witches are exiled from the Germanic people, go to the far
east, mingle with "unclean spirits" and produce a ferocious race
called the Huns which plagued Europe for centuries. Could these
people have been equated with the "fenris wolves" breed by Angrboda
in the Ironwood? When I reach verses 42, I hope to share another
passage from Jordanes that suggests he knew the myth of Angrboda and
her Fenris brood.

In the poem Fjolsvinsmal, the young hero Svipdag approaches afortress. Inside is a maiden named Menglad. At the gate he encounters
a watchman named Fjolsvidr, a name of Odin according to Grimnismal
47. The watchman has two wolf-hounds who guard the gate. Their names
are Geri and Gifr. Odin's hounds are named Geri and Freki, according
to Grimnismal 22. In fact, everything that is said about this castle
reminds us of Asgard. It is shaded by the branches of "Mimir's Tree",
it is surrounded by a high impenetrable wall, and secured by an
artistic gate, which house magnificent golden halls. Inside we find
beautiful beneficent goddesses, including Eir.
The poem itself tells us that Menglad is no ordinary maiden, but a
goddess. She is a healer. Women who have been sick for more than a
year, can sacrifice to her and be healed. The name Men-glad itself
means "Necklace-lover," thus we might rightly suspect that Men-glad
is Freyja, owner of the most famous necklace of all, Brisingsa-Men.
The goddess Eir, the physician among the goddesses sits at her feet.
But more remarkable than finding a prominent goddess at Menglad's
feet, we also find a well-known giantess there. The giantess we find
there is Gerd's mother Aurboda.
Svipdag asks:
38. Tell me, Filsvidr! etc.
how those maids are called,
who sit at Menglds knees
in harmony together?
Filsvidr:
39. Hlif the first is called,
the second is Hlifthursa,

the third Thiodvarta,
Birt and Blid,
Blidr, Frid,
Eir and Aurboda .
Angrboda and Aurboda are the only names in the entire Old Norse
cannon with the suffixboda. Angrrboda is most likely an alternate
name for the giantess otherwise known as Gullveig-Heid. The name
Aurboda may simply be another way of saying Gullveig. Both Aur and
Gull can mean "gold" while the suffixesboda andveig can both be
applied to a strong, fermented drink. Here, we find Aurboda acting as
the maid-servant of a goddess known as "the Necklace-lover"
We learn one other thing about Gymir's wife that may be relevant to
the investigation. A skaldic verse preserved in Skaldskaparmal 25
says:
"Gymir's spray-cold (rsval) spae-wife often brings the ship into
Aegir's jaws where the wave breaks."
If we identify Gerd's mother, Aurboda, with Angrboda, the giantess
also known as Gullveig-Heid, we have a natural explanation of why her
heart would not completely burn. Like her it is "spray-cold", perhaps
formed out of the same venomous cold waves that shaped Ymir.
And her position as a maid-servant first of Frigg, then of Freyja,
and her relationship as Frey's mother-in-law would naturally would
explain why the Vanir objected to her burning. As Frey's mother-in-
law, the Vanir were obligated to seek compensation for the death of a
relative, even by marriage.
8/8/2019 Vlusp 21-26 Who is Gullveig-Heid? By William P. Reaves
16/30
Thus, Gullveig-Heid-Aurboda, the threefold witch, seems to be a
female Loki attached to the Vanir, even as Loki is attached to the
Aesir. In Lokasenna, Loki calls Odin his blood-brother. In Hyndljod,
Freyja refers to Hyndla, another witch resembling Heid her sister.
Once we see the bigger picture and understand the character of
Gullveig-Heid, we also gain insight into the nature of the magic
known as seid. With it, one can alter minds. As we saw, Syritha's
maidservant placed her mistress in a kind of trance. Odin altered
Rind's mind, using seid to have his way with her even though she
resisted him. In Skirnismal, we find Frey bewitched, wasting a way
for love. His only desire is the giant-maiden Gerd, the daughter of
Gullveig-Heid, who likely cast the spell on him from her position ashis sister's maid-servant.
Of course none of these passages definitively prove that this myth,
as outlined here, was known in the heathen-era, but taken together,
there is much circumstantial evidence that this story is at least a
good outline of a larger myth, well-known in heathen times, as
evidenced by the great number and diversity of the sources which seem
to refer to it.
P.S. Call me crazy, but if you've read this far and are still
interested, I'd like you to watch something. I believe that these
images of a three-fold witch with a frozen heart, associated with
wolves and crows, are an archetypal image hidden deep within our
psyche. Artists tap into such things, often unknowingly. With that in
mind, go to www.YouTube.com and search for the video Frozen by
Madonna. (a search for Madonna Frozen will bring it up). Is this an
image of Angrboda? You decide.

Jeffrey Cosser, La sociedad literaria islandesa, 1996):

40. Loki con Angrboda el lobo ganaron,
Y Sleipnir lo dio a luz Svadilfari;
Sinfjtli:

38. Una bruja maliciosa fuiste,
Una giganta, una valkiria,
Insolente, monstruosa,
En el saln del padre de todo.
Todos los Einheriar (hroes del Valhalla)
Pelearon uno contra otro,
Mujer tramposa!
Por tu causa.
Nueve lobos engendramos
En Sagunes;
Estaba yo solo
Padre de todos ellos.
Gudmund:
39. Padre no fuiste
De los lobos Fenris,
Ms viejo que todos,
Hasta donde yo recuerdo;

encontramos a otra giganta ah.
32. Heid y Hrossthiof fueron
los hijos de Hrimnir.
33. Todos los Valas son
De Vidolf;
Todos los adivinos
De Vilmeidr,
Todos los hechiceros
De Svarthfdi;

Ella ardi,
Tres veces quemada,
Tres veces la llevaron adelante,
Varias veces,
Aunque ella siguiera viva.
Heid la llamaron,
A cualquier lugar ella vino,
La buena profetisa Vala:
Ella domestic lobos,
Artes mgicas saba,
Artes mgicas practicaba;
Nunca fue la alegra
De una mujer malvada.

Los votos no se mantienen sagrados;
Sin palabras, sin juramentos,
Sin pactos obligatorios
Recprocamente hechos.

De los moribundos;
Con los Dioses se sienta
Con sangre roja profana:
Entonces negra es la luz del sol
Para los veranos siguientes;

Todo clima se convierte en tormenta.
Entiendes an, o qu?
All, sentada en lo alto,
Tocando un arpa,
El guardin de la giganta,
El alegre Egdir;
Cantaba junto a l,
objeto.

Dentro encontramos Diosas benficas hermosas, incluyendo a Eir.
Brisingsa-Men.
8/8/2019 Vlusp 21-26 Who is Gullveig-Heid? By William P. Reaves

Svipdag pregunta:
38. Dime, Fjlsvidr! Etc.
Cmo se llaman esas doncellas,
Sentadas en las rodillas de Mengld
Juntas en armona?
Fjlsvidr:
39. Hlif se llama la primera,
La segunda es Hlifthursa,
La tercera Thiodvarta,
Bjrt y Blid,
Blidr, Frid,
Eir y Aurboda.
8/8/2019 Vlusp 21-26 Who is Gullveig-Heid? By William P. Reaves
29/30
an por matrimonio.
resisti a l.
T decide.
