Vocabulary Lesson 13Words with

Common Roots

“OFF TO EGYPT”

We took an excursion or trip to the museum.

Studying Egypt is part of our history curriculum.

We learned that Egyptians were mortal just like all humans. That means they will die because they

cannot overcome their physical mortality.

Ancient Egyptian Kings or Pharaohs wanted to be immortal. That

means they wanted to never die. We remember them when we see

mummies or pyramids.

Egyptian writing is not like our cursive writing. It has recurring

patterns or symbols. Some of the symbols are so tiny they are nearly

microscopic.

Taking a field trip to a museum is not a common occurrence or

something we do everyday.

At the museum gift shop we could look through a

kaleidoscope and see beautiful patterns of colored glass.

You could purchase a telescopic lens for your camera to help you photograph objects

far away.

You might see a submarine with a periscope that rotates in a

complete circle above the water.

Perhaps you might be interested in a doctor’s kit that contains a

stethoscope to listen to your heart.

The museum had a snack bar with a microwave oven to heat

our lunch.
