The first International Credit Union Day was celebrated that year as well! But also, in 1948, True North was born. Over the past 70 years, Credit Unions have come and gone, most merging into others, leaving now 10 Credit Unions based in our great state. How much money do you spend each week for work lunches? Do the math. The number may shock you. But, for just a few dollars and several minutes of your time, you can prepare something delicious at home. We get it; you’re busy. And you love that little diner near your office. That’s why we’re not telling you to go cold turkey on the sushi rolls and personal
pizzas. We’re only challenging you to brown-bag it once a week: on Tuesdays. Don’t leave your lunch prep for the morning madness; do it the night before. Also, make sure you have all the ingredients on hand before Monday night rolls around by jotting them down on the weekly grocery list. Changing a long-standing habit is never easy. Are you up to the challenge?

MESSAGE FROM THE CEO— Continued from page 1—
Our Mission is to be a member owned and locally managed credit union that provides quality financial solutions for its members. True North is dedicated to improving the economic well-being of the members, employees, and communities it serves. For 70 years, the members of our leadership team, our Board, and our Supervisory Committee have lived in Alaska. We are members of local chambers of commerce, economic development agencies, Rotary clubs, swim clubs, non-profit boards, and PTAs, all based in Alaska. We work with your local government and agencies to
understand community needs, and then we work to develop programs to help meet them. We are member owned and Alaska focused and those principles
are ones by which we manage your credit union. You could
say that serving Alaska is our True North, and we believe in the principle of “People helping People”, which is the keystone of the credit union
movement. This fall we celebrate
True North’s platinum anniversary, with appreciation for our
member owners, along with the 70th Anniversary International Credit Union Day. We thank you for your support over the past 70 years, and look forward to another 70 years of service to our Alaskan membership and communities.

October 18, 2018, will mark the 70th anniversary of International Credit Union Day. This year’s theme is “Find Your Platinum Lining.” It combines the traditional gift of platinum for 70th anniversaries with a play on the saying “every cloud has a silver lining.” Credit unions all over the world will be celebrating the history and the success of the “People-not-Profit” philosophy. This year’s theme emphasizes the credit union movement’s loyalty to its members and its mission to provide them financial support and guidance. The movement began in the 1840s as a democratic consumer cooperative by weavers in Rochdale, England. Frustrated by bankers who denied them loans simply because they weren’t wealthy, the weavers and workers decided to pool their incomes and loan money to each other. In time, this cooperation put each member on solid financial ground and encouraged their own businesses to flourish. The need for equitable financial institutions grew and, in 1971, the World Council of Credit Unions, Inc. (WOCCU) was created to help establish and maintain viable credit union movements. It has become the leading voice for advocacy and governance on behalf of the international credit union community. Today, over 235 million people are served by credit unions in 109 countries and 6 continents. Join us at any of our branches on Oct. 18 to celebrate ICU Day.
