Manor & Lodge Wheel Chair Accessible Bus Fundraiser
Fundraising efforts are progressing really well with $21,321 raised so far. There have been lots of
questions about the bus so I am publishing this “Frequently Asked Questions” list to assist
1. How much will the bus cost fully equipped? The price guide for a Toyota Hiace that we have been given is $70,000 to $80,000 fully equipped. The price variation is because the type of hoist varies, the configuration of seats varies and prices vary depending on special sales during the year.
2. How many wheelchairs will it carry? A common configuration is one wheel chair and 5 passenger seats with driver and jockey in the front. This configuration varies and has not been finally decided. The wheel chair hoist can be used to assist frail Manor and Lodge residents who cannot use steps to get into the bus.
3. How often will it be used? It will be used by the activities programs in both Manor and Lodge. The days and times will vary according to time of year and program. I expect it will be used on multiple days each week.
4. How many wheelchair residents have we and will it be used for other mobility challenged residents? Wheelchairs are used for a variety of purposes, some residents only use them when they go out as they get tired, others use them to get to and from the dining room but can walk with assistance in their own room. There is no fixed number of people that could be categorised as “wheelchair residents”. The hoist enables residents who cannot use steps to get into the bus and attend small group outings with staff supervision.
5. Who will fund ongoing maintenance and servicing of the vehicle and its equipment? This will be funded from the normal operating budgets of the Manor and Lodge. They are completely separate from the normal operating budget of the independent units
6. Who will drive it? Staff and potentially volunteers may assist.
7. What is the comparable cost between buying and renting? The hire of a bus is complex, all inclusive of insurance, fuel and hire fees it is about $200 per day, however using a hire bus removes flexibility for the activities program, increases staff costs in travelling to a depot and back again each time it is hired, and these types of vehicles are popular so demand and supply become an issue. Assuming the bus could be used 3 times in a week, within 3 years we would have paid more in hire costs than the purchase of the bus. Having our own bus enables the Manor and Lodge to be spontaneous with their programming as well as scheduling regular outings and also enables the Village to promote our services by branding our bus with the Logo.
8. How can I donate? The Village Baxter is a Public Benevolent Institution, registered charity and deductible gift recipient. Donations can be made through any of the bus fundraising events that are promoted separately or directly to the Village and a personal receipt can be issued for tax purposes.

Community Centre Bookings
The Community Centre bookings are being moved to an online booking system commencing 1st of
February 2017, the link is on our website under the “Residents” tab. All existing bookings in our calendars have been transferred over. You do not have to use the online system - bookings can still be made through the hostesses or reception, however this new system will enable residents to make bookings themselves as well as provide opportunity for the volunteers who lock up the buildings at night to be able to see if a venue has been booked for the evening, saving them an unnecessary walk. The online booking site also has a mobile App that can be used on a mobile phone or ipad, providing Residents with the ability to check and book venues outside of office hours. Search for “setmore appointments” in your app store. Bookings must be made by Residents and the Hostesses can easily see the Name and contact details of the Resident making the booking. Bookings that do not have a Resident contact will be deleted. The terms, conditions and booking sheets all remain the same as they are now and Residents will still need to complete the standard forms and donation for private functions and give them to the hostess. Residents booking Parkside may still be asked by the Hostess (who can see the booking details), if it is possible for them to relocate for a post-thanksgiving service gathering, however we will no longer insist that the booking relocate. There are other small venues such as the Green Room and Manning that have kitchen facilities that are suitable substitutes in the uncommon event that Parkside is unavailable. The Chaplains will be able to see all of the available venues online when making service arrangements. This policy change was made in response to feedback from Residents wanting to have certainty when making a booking for a venue, especially when they have arranged a large special event that has external guests.
The Resident Association (RA) is the group who plan/organise/run the social activities within the Village and is involved in the maintenance of our Amenities. We are asking you all to think about joining this committee. Interested in joining the committee? Do you have a friend or neighbour whom you think might? To be a committee member you don’t require special skills, just to enjoy being involved with folk, have fun whilst participating in RA functions throughout the year. On Friday, 3rd February nominations open with forms available from your Hostess. Nominations will close at 2pm on Friday 24th February. Every person living in an Independent Unit is eligible to nominate, OR be nominated for the Residents’ Association Committee. The RA collect the nominations from the Hostess’ & the list of nominated folk will be placed on the RA notice boards. If an election is required, voting forms will be placed in letterboxes on Friday 24
th February.
Voting will close at 3pm on Friday 10th March. Results will be placed on the RA Notice Boards.
The Residents Meeting and AGM for the RA will be held on Wednesday 16th March in Grant Centre
Chapel.
Chaplaincy Support Group
The first meeting of the year for Chaplaincy Support Group will be on Wednesday February1st at 2pm
at Parkside and then on Sunday February 12th Songs of Praise will be held in the Chapel at 2.30pm
when the guest soloist will be Ken Harris. You are warmly invited to come along. For further details see your notice board. We would also welcome volunteers to host new residents to a meal as a way of welcoming them to our village and/or to join our catering teams who provide refreshments following Memorial Services. Village Baxter Day Centre/Friendship Club
The Friendship Club is located at The Village next door to the Administration Building and operates Monday to Saturday 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. We provide a regular social opportunity for Village residents and those from the Peninsula Community. A bus service operates from The Friendship Club to collect clients from home and subsequently return them at the end of the session. Morning tea and a delicious home cooked 2 course lunch is included. The cost is $18 per day Mon – Fri and $20 Saturday. Activities include centre based, out and about programs and retreats. Regular activities include bingo, cards, gentle exercise, craft, movie outings, beach visits, and shopping trips. Outings include destinations such as Arthurs Seat, The Briars Parks – Mt Martha, Western Point Marina, Phillip Island, and Sunny Ridge Strawberry Farm amongst others. It is a lot of fun and you can enjoy meeting some new people. Come along and try it out.

Most CLEO Club members will be aware that on April 5th we will be holding an auction to raise funds
for the bus which will be purchased for the use of our Aged Care facility residents who have limited mobility. This has been a wonderful initiative on the part of the 2 Karens (from the Lodge and the Manor) and deserves as much support as we can muster. We have also organised another couple of activities for that night for which you will need to save as many gold coins as you can manage…….
But wait………..there’s more!! One of our members has offered to help raise our total by having her head shaved! We thank Rosemary Chesney for this very generous decision and hope that our members will be equally generous in their support of her gesture. This activity will be the first item on the agenda on this special fund-raising night.
A reminder also that bookings for our dinner at Grant Café on Tuesday, March 21st will open before
CLEO on February 5th at 4.30pm. The cost is $20 per person. There is a limit of 100 people for this
evening.
Clarke Village Travel
On Wednesday 11th January, 25 residents and friends travelled to Her Majesty’s Theatre to enjoy the
live show “Kinky Boots”. What a spectacle! It was based on a true story and what a story it was! Every member of the cast performed brilliantly. It is what I would call “a good day out”. A request has been made for another outing to Caribbean market. The proposed date is Wednesday 29

You Can Be a Life Saver
One person dies every 24 seconds from drinking contaminated water. Samaritan’s purse is providing safe drinking water for families and communities in the world’s poorest nations, by providing wells, rainwater tanks and bio-sand filters. They also provide training in health and hygiene practices. You can donate to this work by enclosing your gift in an envelope marked “Turn on the tap”. (If you require a receipt for taxation purposes, please also enclose your name and unit number).
You can give your gift (by March 2017) to the village chaplain, place it in the offering in the village church, or forward it to the co-ordinator Ted McGain Unit 233, Phone 5971 6949.
Positive Thinking
The Resident Association have positive thinking sessions commencing February 21st in the Meeting
room at 10am in Clarke Centre. These sessions will run for four weeks. To have an idea of people interested in attending we have placed a list on the R/A notice boards. A cuppa will be provided after each session. Central Australia Trip

FROM THE CHAPLAINS
Encouragement
Recently I have been through a trying period of having to conduct more funerals than would normally be the case. Every funeral we conduct has its challenges but when you get a few in quick succession it can become dispiriting. Just as this season drew to an end a staff member unexpectedly took me aside to tell me how much she appreciated two of the services she had attended. It was such an encouragement. I wasn’t looking for it but when that kind word of encouragement came it really lifted my spirits and gave me new enthusiasm.
Encouragement is such a beautiful thing. All it costs is a moment or two of our time yet the value of what it delivers often cannot be measured. Going through some harder times is a fact of life. We all experience them. But how refreshing and comforting it is when we get that word of encouragement from someone else that we didn’t expect, but really appreciate when it comes. Encouragement adds value to people. It lifts the spirits of the receiver and warms the heart of the giver. It inevitably adds value to the relationship.
Albert Einstein is attributed with the thought that we should try not to become a person of success, but rather try to become a person of value. Words of encouragement, even to a stranger, can add value to a person by lifting their spirits and helping them to see themselves as a person of worth. The New Testament is filled with passages that prompt us to love one another, be kind to one another, be compassionate with one another and numerous times we are exhorted to encourage one another.
“…encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you.” 2 Corinthians 13:11
May we each find someone else to encourage today.

Exercise Equipment At the request of the VBRC, the exercise equipment will be removed. The Concrete pads will be left and bench chair installed.
Bus The committee stated that there is increasing concern from residents who have mobility problems and cannot manage the step on the bus. The VBRC will provide a list of requirements however caution should be exercised as any changes will likely result in much higher monthly service fees.
Welcome Kit The committee will review the resident kit and put forward suggestions.

Grateful thanks to the Village residents who have exercised a ministry of care toward Daryl and Evelyn (Hunt) during Evelyn's life at the Manor over the past 5+ years. Frequent inquiries about her wellbeing and recent cards on her passing have been a blessed reminder of genuine concern. My family and I would like to thank everyone in the Village for their cards, flowers and messages of condolence on the passing of Bert. We would particularly like to express gratitude to the wonderful Village nurses who cared for Bert before we moved into the Lodge last August. To all the staff in the Lodge who made his last months as comfortable as humanly possible, we thank you. Special thanks and appreciation go to the wonderful people at the Village Church which Bert loved so much. Your care and support of him over many years was a source of great comfort.
