Well, Brethren, it appears Spring has finally arrived and, if you are like most people,
you’ve ventured outside to soak up some of those warming rays. Good for you!
Many of us are busy planning for the Spring Reunion scheduled for the weekend of
April 15-16 as well as our Ring Ceremony on April 17. If you know of anyone who is
interested in joining our Spring Class, have them get in touch with our Secretary, Ill. Pete Eure,
at 757-599-6617.
Wednesday, May 18 will find our Valley hosting the annual Ill. William M. Johnson
Memorial Golf Tournament at the Williamsburg National Golf Club. The cost is $80 per player
and the slots will sell out fast. Williamsburg National is a fantastic facility and the management
team up there is very accommodating to our needs. All the proceeds will go toward the Speech
and Childhood Language Disorders Clinic at Old Dominion University.
The Scottish Rite Picnic will be held on Saturday, June 11, at the Scottish Rite Masonic
Center. Come on out and bring your entire family.
Looking a little ahead, the Valley of Newport News will be the host Valley for the
Virginia Scottish Rite Conference. Our own Ill. Jack Smith is the President of the Conference
and I know he would appreciate the support of his Valley. Please mark your calendars and plan
to attend the Virginia Scottish Rite Conference September 23-24 at the Omni Hotel in Newport
News. More information will be provided in the next newsletter.
Brethren, the Valley of Newport News Scottish Rite very much appreciates you being a
member of the Valley and would ask that you make every effort to participate in the various
events that are held annually. Make being a Scottish Rite Mason a priority in your busy
schedule and help your Valley to grow.
That’s all the news that’s available for our Valley. Have a wonderful Spring and enjoy
the warmer weather.
Have you signed up to play in the Annual Ill.
William M. Johnson Memorial Golf
Tournament?
Have you signed up to sponsor a hole at
the Golf Tournament?
Have you volunteered to help with
the Golf Tournament?
Let’s all do what we can to support this
major fundraising so that we can help the
children at the Speech and Childhood
Language Disorders Clinic at ODU !

By this time, each member of the Valley of Newport News Scottish Rite should have received
their dues notice from the Supreme Council for their 2011 dues. Several members who paid their
dues have called the office and said that the year was not shown on the current dues card. I agree
that it is hard to see, but, if you look just above the “member’s signature” line, you will see “2011”.
It blends in with the background. Dues are very important to the operation of any Scottish Rite
Valley, Blue Lodge, or any other Masonic organization that you may belong to. At the present time,
there are 215 members of our Valley who have not submitted their 2011 dues. That equates to
$21,500.00, which the Valley of Newport News Scottish Rite needs to operate your Scottish Rite
Masonic Center. Please check your dues card and make sure it says “2011”. If you have any
questions concerning your dues, please contact the office (757-599-6617) and we will see if we can
help you. We have approximately 25 to 30 members who are in arrears in their dues and are subject
to suspension for non-payment of dues. Please contact the Secretary and let me help you in
resolving the problem concerning your dues. We DO NOT want to loose anyone because of non-
payment of dues.
Members: If you have moved and/or changed your mailing address, please let the secretary
know!!! We need your new address in order to be sure that you are receiving all correspondence
from the Valley of Newport News Scottish Rite or the Supreme Council. Please keep us up to
date!!!
I look forward to seeing you at the next Stated Meeting where we will be remembering our
Brothers who have passed. We will be having our “Remembrance and Renewal” program. It will
again be presented by Brother Herbert J. Smith, Jr. KCCH and his team. See you at the meeting!!

Knights of St. Andrew William Overby, Venerable Master
Brethren of the Valley of Newport News Scottish Rite wearing black hats, we need you to join with us, the Knights
of St. Andrew. We have some exciting times coming up and I wouldn't want you to miss any of them. Just to mention a couple is the Spring Reunion where we put on the exciting 29th Degree Program, the Feast of Brannockburn, we
provide support for the Valley meetings and dinners as well as many other events. Why not get involved and help us
assist the Valley of Newport News Scottish Rite to be the best Valley in the State of Virginia. Just ask any of the Sir Knights wearing the funny hat with a cherry on top for guidance to apply or just attend our next meeting on May 24th
and fill out an application for membership along with your annual dues of $25.00.
The Spring Reunion starts on Friday night April 15 and continues on Saturday April 16. The presentation of the 29 th
Degree will be on Saturday morning. The Ring Ceremony will be Sunday April 17 and all Sir Knights are needed to participate in this ceremony. PLEASE, all Sir Knights involved in the degree work and those interested in the
Knights of St. Andrew, plan on attending the practice sessions, the Reunion and the Ring Ceremony.
Fraternally Sir Knight William Overby, Venerable Master

It is a great honor to be elected as the Venerable Master of the Newport News Lodge of Perfection for the ensuing year. I thank you for your confidence and trust. Any suggestions you may have to make things better for the Lodge of
Perfection will be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to convey them to me by what ever means is convenient for you. I
prefer your suggestions and comments be submitted to me in writing to make certain nothing is misunderstood. I will
review them, discuss them with the officers and will meet with the Valley Personal Representative so that an appropriate reply can be provided..
The 9th Annual Ill. William M. Johnson, 33rd Degree, Memorial Golf Tournament is scheduled for Wednesday May
18, 2011 at the Williamsburg National Golf Club Jamestown Course located at 3700 Centerville Road in Williamsburg, VA. There will be a shotgun start at 1:00pm and the cost is $80.00 per player. We also need Hole Sponsors and if you
contribute a minimum of $150.00, we will put your sponsorship information on a sign and place it on one of the eighteen
holes. A $500.00 sponsorship will get you a free foursome. If for some reason you cannot attend, please consider
making a generous donation for the Speech and Childhood Language Disorder Clinic at ODU. Make your checks payable to the Newport News Scottish Rite Foundation and mail them to 65 Saunders Road, Newport News, VA, 23601.
For more information please visit our web site at www.newportnewsscottishrite.org I encourage you to help us make
the 2011 Golf Tournament a great success for the Speech and Childhood Language Disorder Clinic at ODU, Norfolk Virginia.
The Valley Spring Reunion is being held April 15, 16 and 17, 2011. As you travel through your districts, please
encourage all Master Masons that are not in the Scottish Rite to consider joining. I would also like to encourage all of
our current members to attend and support the Reunion. We can always use your help and it helps makes the new members to get more involved.
Our Annual Family Picnic this year will be on June 11, 2011 and our Senior Warden will need the assistance of all of
the officers. The Knights of St. Andrew will be assisting as they have done in the past. We are very fortunate to have the
Knights of St. Andrew and I appreciate everything they do for us. Feel free to bring your friends and of course your family. Please help spread the word on this event by announcing it at your Lodges and include those Masons that are not
in the Scottish Rite. Hopefully when they attend they may consider becoming a member of the Valley of Newport
News.
May the God of Heaven and earth keep us and guide us,
James A. Freeman
Venerable Master
Scottish Rite Degrees - Chapter of Rose Croix 15° - 18° Degrees
Page 6
15° - Knight of the East, of the Sword, or of the Eagle Fidelity to obligations and perseverance of purpose under difficulties and discouragement are the lessons of this degree. The striking crimson velvet
apron of this degree is edged with green, having a bleeding head above two crossed swords and a
triangle (top point to the left) with three interlaced triangles inside it. The jewel is three golden
concentric triangles encompassing two crossed swords. The duty is to rebuild the Masonic Temple of
liberty, equality and fraternity in the souls of men.
16° - Prince of Jerusalem We learn of heroism of patience, the nobility of self-sacrifice and
compassionate judgment; along with charity, fidelity and brotherhood. The crimson apron is edged in
gold and aurora-color, with a square, shield, Delta with three YODs, balance and a hand of justice. The jewel is a mother-of-pearl lozenge with a hand holding a balance in equipoise; under it a sword with five
stars surrounding the point. On the left is a Hebrew D, on the right is a Hebrew Z. The duties are to aid
those who labor to build the Symbolic Temple; to judge equitably and fairly; to keep faith in the justice
and beneficence of God and to press forward with hope for the persecuted and oppressed.
17° - Knight of the East & West The wisdom of this degree is that loyalty to God is man's primary
allegiance and that temporal governments not founded upon God and His righteousness will inevitably
fall. The apron is of yellow satin with crimson and gold, with a sword and Tetractys of the Tetragrammaton on it. The jewel is a heptagon of half silver and half gold, with crossed swords on a
balance on the obverse and a lamb on the Book of Seven Seals on the reverse. The jewel is hung from a
double order - one black (left-to-right) and one white (right-to-left), representing good versus evil. A
gold coronet is also presented. The duties are to work, reflect and pray; to hope, trust and believe; to
teach the truths that are hidden in allegory and concealed by the symbols of Freemasonry.
18° - Knight Rose Croix This degree emphasizes that life and its strength come from God. The rose
signifies the dawn and the cross is a sacred symbol of antiquity in many cultures. One is also taught to
be tolerant of other's errors and faults. The apron is of white leather or satin, bordered in red, with a skull and cross-bones, a red passion cross and three red rosettes. The grand jewel is a gold compass
open a quarter circle. A rose-cross is between the legs of the compass and under it is a pelican, tearing
its breast to feed its seven young on the obverse and an eagle with wings extended on the reverse. On the circle are the letters I.N.R.I. The duties are to practice virtue; to labor to eliminate vice; to purify
humanity; to be tolerant of the faith and creed of others.
