VALERIE BELIN

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH AFRICA September 26 – 29/ 2013GENEVA SWITZERLAND January 30/ 2013 – February 2/ 2014

Valérie Belin is one of the most french prominent artist of her generation.Since the early 1990s, she has upheld a rigorous photographic process that both revitalizes the classical still-life and portrait traditions, and also demonstrates a sin-gular modernity. From one series to the next, her artworks adhere to a strict set of rules: they view her subjects from an entirely frontal perspective; they are isola ted, placed in a setting utterly devoid of context; they depict matter with surgical pre-ci sion. Her treatment of objects and the human body remains singular. Her ensembles embrace a wide variety of subjects, from bodies and faces to mir rors, meat, smashed windshields, bags of chips, and carnival masks. Her choice of subject is deliberate, fundamental: never simply a pretext for creating an effect, it always, she says, interests her “personally,” and is calculated to resonate with her vision. In her work, the body plays an essential role, in its various metamorphoses, representations and postures. In 2007, a retrospective exhibition is dedicated to the artist by three photography museums: the Huis Marseille Foundation in Amsterdam, the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris and the Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne. An important monograph of the artist has been published by the German publisher Steidl. For the first time, Valérie Belin presents her work in South Africa.
