UZZELL CHURCH ~Uzzell Church Rd~ Cemetery
Visited by Members and Volunteers ofIsle of Wight Historical Society
January 11, 2004
The cemetery is located adjacent to the church with a portion of the cemetery located in the woods just behind the church. Since this is a rather large cemetery and to ensure accuracy in the transcriptions, it was divided into sections and team members were assigned a specific section to record. The cemetery layout is depicted in Figure 1. Most of the inscriptions were fairly easy to read but in a few cases, and due to deterioration of the tombstones, a combination of shaving cream and water was used with a soft brush to clean and make the inscriptions legible. Afterwards, a clean water spray was used to remove any residue.
The letters in the, “Sec. #” columns refer to the section that the tombstone and grave is located. Throughout the process, an attempt was made to preserve the, ‘look and feel’ of the original inscriptions as regards the word spacing, arrangement, and possible misspellings.
