President’s Message

By John Sovis

The SPE Cleveland section needs your participation as an existing

member or become a member, as an employee of the Plastic Industry or

technical professional using plastics for product development.

Attending meetings is important to learn how new materials are

developed, and process, testing and tooling technology and information

about your competitors and other companies that make up the industry.

The section’s main focus and mission is the education of our members

and young students in our elementary, high, technical schools, and

universities about plastic materials and processing of them. To carry

out this mission we need more board members to provide leadership and

carry out the activities of all committees. The programs for our

meetings are included in this issue of the newsletter and appear on our

web site www.specleveland.org. Our membership committee will be contacting you in the future to

discuss what you expect to receive from section activities.

2014-2015 OBJECTIVES

A. Fill all director positions.

B. Recruit two assistants for all committee chairs.

C. Improve meeting attendance 10-15%.

D. Expand education opportunities for youth.

E. Improve communication with members, industry and community.

F. Support student sections at local universities.

G. Recognize section member for service given to the section and industry.

H. Improve our web site format and use.

Thanks to all our existing Board members that

have accepted very important officer, committee

chair and committee member positions. They

have committed to help with achieving the

objectives listed above. Our board invites all our

members to help achieve these objectives in

some way such as attending our technical

meetings and severing on the board. The board

members names and contact information are

published in the newsletter and on our web site.

You can contact me or the other officers and

committee chair to express your desire to help

and suggest subjects for future technical

meetings.

The Cleveland Section of the Society of Plastics

Engineers has 252 active members.

Geographically, Cleveland is still a stalwart of the

polymer industry, so it is surprising to find the

Section’s membership has now dipped to thirteenth,

behind Detroit, Chicago, Eastern New England,

New Jersey, South Texas, Milwaukee, Upper

Midwest, Southern California, Southern,

Philadelphia, Carolinas, and Akron SPE Sections in

the United States.

The Society of Plastics Engineers is the “go-to”

resource for 20,000 plastics professionals around

the world and provides members access to valuable

technical information.

Help us help you!

- Recommend co-workers as prospective members

- Attend the monthly meetings

About A. Schulman

A. Schulman is a leading international supplier of high-performance plastic compounds and resins, which

are used as raw materials in a variety of markets. Technology centers in the Americas and Europe are

devoted to new product development and research. Each of our Innovatoin Centers is equipped with

sophisticated analytical equipment, and highly skilled engineers and scientists to help us to excel in the

fundamental science of the interactions between colorants, additives and thermoplastics.

Many injection molders, extruders, and other polymer converters excel at their business by becoming

experts in processing and manufacturing technology. Often times, analysis of complex polymer-related

problems require knowledge and equipment not available in the typical manufacturing environment. Our

presenter will review a variety of analytical techniques used in problem analysis like DSC, TGA, FTIR,

DMA, and rheometry. Some relevant case studies will highlight specific applications of these techniques.

About The Presenter

Tom McQuaide has BS in Chemistry and a MS in Polymer Science, both from The University of Akron.

He worked for 17 years in the Applied Polymer Research Laboratory at The University of Akron before

moving to A. Schulman where he has been for the last 15 years. In his more than 30 years in polymer

research and development, Tom has performed hundreds projects involving failure analysis, compound

development, characterization, and new method development. Tom is currently an R&D Engineer at A.

Schulman’s Innovation and Collaboration Center in Akron, OH.

Education Committee Update

I am happy to join the Cleveland Section after many years of membership in SPE, formerly with the

Firelands Section and a brief period with the Detroit Section. Our Education Committee now stands as

me and Jeff Dininger. The committee’s task is to help to disseminate information about the Wonderful

World of Plastics to our membership, our community and to local schools and universities.

Our previous educational programs included a High School Essay Contest, a College Scholarship Program

and providing prizes and judges for the Cleveland Area Science Fair. While I and Jeff, along with our

Student Committee Chairman, Ron Raleigh all have considerable experience working for SPE in various

educational capacities, we would certainly welcome suggestions from our membership at large. I and Jeff

would also like to add at least one more member to our Education Committee.

Please contact me if you are interested in joining

the committee or with any suggestions or questions

at dmeade@chromacolors.com.

I look forward to your input and welcome the

opportunity to serve the Cleveland Section.

Moldex3D

Molding Innovation - Your Core Competitiveness

Moldex3D CAE software provides the

technology you need if you are fed up with

countless trail and errors, which contribute to

the great waste of time, energy and money

during the mold making process.

Now is the time to advance from such

inefficiency. Moldex3D’s solutions help users

simulate and validate their part and mold

designs before actual production. Design

revisions and optimizations can be done much

more quickly and more easily. Moldex3D not

only saves your precious money and labor but

also avoids time wasting mold trails.
