IN CELEBRATION OF ABM WEEK 2010, the UP Association of Biology Majors (ABM) held its annual Grand Pakain in the In-stitute of Biology lobby last September 23, at 12PM. Around fifty students, faculty members and staff feasted on the food prepared by each of the organization’s committees.
The Grand Pakain event is ABM’s way of giving back to the faculty of the Institute for all they have done for its members. It is also a way for Biology majors to get together outside their classrooms and take a little break from the worries of school.
Spearheaded by the Committee on Alumni Relations, the event’s success was clear in the number of willing and very hungry participants feasting on the scrumptious pancit, roasted chicken, pizza, lumpia, puto, siomai, and sushi. As further proof, even Ate Rose (a.k.a. Ate Guard) smiled and no longer asked students for their IDs.
For dessert, the Committee on Sports hired a dirty ice cream vendor. However, his ice cream ran out quickly and not every-body got to taste his mango, cheese and chocolate flavored ice cream! When asked if she managed to grab a cone for her-self, ABM Executive Vice President Demi Meñez simply answered “hindi rin ako naka-ice cream.”

by Darren LaurenteIn celebration of the international year of biodiversity, the ABM Finance Committee organized UPload Life, a photoessay contest open to all college students with the theme: “Seize the moment, capture unity in biodiversity". The three-month long contest concluded with a night full of performances, art and celebration.
An exhibit in the Bahay ng Alumni was set up where the contestant’s pieces were displayed and those who attended the event were treated to performances by the UP Streetdance club, the College of Science Chorale, and the UP Music Circle. Overall,Overall, UPload life was an excellent campaign for raising environmental awareness and promoting appreciation for nature and biodiversity. It was an embodiment of the association’s principle of not just studying life, but living it as well.
If you’ve been living under a rock, been in a coma, or been a UP Diliman BS Biology major for the past year, you probably missed out on the must-see movies that 2010 churned out. Fret not! Here’s a quick crash course along the cinematic speedway for you to catch up and get the full-on moviegoing experience that the year had to offer.
Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows Pt. 2It is the last Potter. You just have to.
Black SwanNatalie Portman (Closer) and Mila Kunis (That 70’s Show) star as ballerinas competing to be in a production of Swan Lake in this gripping psychological thriller by Darren Aronofsky (The
Wrestler, Requiem for a Dream). [Writer’s Note: The writer was downloading a torrent of this film as this article was being written]
127 HoursDannyDanny Boyle delivers another tour de force with his follow up to Slumdog Millionaire, this time depicting the story of real-life mountain climber Aron Ralston (James Franco), who became trapped by a boulder in Robbers Roost, Utah, and ended up chopping his own arm off.

Well you all know this year has been a BLAST with music. Literally. Music has never been this LOUD and head-throbbing. Everywhere on the radio or on the interwebs, you'll hear migraine-inducing beats and mind-degrading lyrics entering your cochlear chambers and eventually you'll get those elements stuck in your head until you dream of it while you sleep. It's amazing how the pop-dance genre has taken over the airwaves and everybody's obliged to dance to it whether they want to or not. Oh well, that's society nowadays for ya. As for me, I am proud to say I'm one of the victims who just could NOT resist this type of music this entire year in music. So to cap off 2010, hehere's my top ten guilty ple-- err... awesome-est songs for the past 12 months.
