Jake Early’s (BA, Information and Communication Studies, ’94) design work and printmaking have earned him much notoriety. A California native, Early produces unique serigraphs on the printing press he designed and built in his Chico studio. His simple illustrative style, bold color palette, and strong depiction of place all resonate with collectors. Early’s trademark is his use of metallic inks, created by mixing powdered metals into a clear ink base. These inks capture and reflect natural light, shifting the mood of each print as lighting conditions change.
Jake Early to Design Chico Experience Week Series
Early is set to design a series of five prints over the next five years to celebrate The Chico Experience. In collaboration with Chico Paper Company he will donate a portion of the prints’ sales to the Chico State Alumni Association. The first print will be unveiled during the inaugural Chico Experience Week at Chico Paper Company on October 8, from 5:00—7:00 p.m. and Early will be in attendance to answer questions and meet fellow alumni and fans. Chico Paper Company is owned by alums Greg Strong (BA, Asian Studies, History, 1991) and Jana Donoho-Strong (BFA, Fine Arts, 1992).
Early’s work includes the popular Chico Landmark series, Chico Street series, Bidwell Park Centennial series, Chico Seasons, Bidwell Presbyterian, the Santa Barbara series, and his work with Neil Young and “My Morning Jacket” on their 2008 concert imagery, Chico Sideways series, National Parks Service “Whiskey town”and his latest: California Highway 1 series.
In addition to his degree from CSU, Chico, Early also studied at the School of Fine Arts in Seville, Spain.
For more information on Jake Early, visit his web site at www.jakeearly.com
