BOUNDING SPACE [play time]03 BOUNDING SPACE [play time]03
[bound-ing speys] to confine, limit or restrain the unlimited three dimensional realm
studio 1 spring ‘09 brianREX
bounding space explored the containment of spatial zones through an iterative series of progressive analytical diagrams based on the movie play time by jacques tati.

at home in heterotopia: designing for “others” dealt with the issues of societal influences on program. opposing social forces, technophiles and neo-luddites, deemed “normal” and “other” respectively, were defined to create a narrative in which these forces would interact. the resulting clash influenced an architectural response in which normal was rejected and other accepted.

blurred surfaces studied geometry, pattern, and the unique intersection of the two. a grid of tessellated geometries was subdivided to produce a diamond-like polygon. a “rebuild” function determined the finite points at which transformation of the shape no longer produced visual variety. after fifteen variations, the rebuilt shapes were arranged in a gradient sequence that was lofted to create bricks. the bricks were arranged along the existing tessellated grid using the measurements and degree of tessellation to establish order. the resulting wall exaggerated the original form.

studio IV fall ‘10 glennHILL
structural tectonics was a semester devoted to the issues of structural form and tectonics. from the base point of precedent studies, form was derived by utilizing tectonic connections of various structural members [steel and concrete] to develop two projects; a long span steel wind museum and a pre-cast concrete military office building.

43 EMERGENCE [bacterial decay]
[ih-mur-juhns] the act of coming into existence; process driven development.
43 EMERGENCE [bacterial decay] studio V spring ‘11 kuhnPARK
logical operands were created based on the properties of the bacteria bacillus. these operands informed an apparatus which in turn provided the basis for an exploration of formal decay. decay slowly reduces a host organism to its basic form, removing skin [envelope], muscular systems [circulation] and internal organs [program]. this process of reduction exposes the skeletal [structure] as the only viable means of recognizing the previously existing form. decay unearths new systemic understandings of envelope, structure, circulation, and program.

57 [le catalogue et la placé de la révolution sociale] MEDIATION\MEDITATION[mee-dee-ey-shuhn] the act of occupying an intermediate place or position between parties. [med-i-tey-shuhn] to engage in continued or extended thought to further intellectual discourse.

studio VI summer ‘11 joshuaNASONdanielPRUSKE
the quiet revolution was a period in quebec history characterized by a reorganization of industry, economy, and social order in quebec. by using the basics of revolution [disruption, upheaval, and subversion] the revolutionists redefined what it meant to be québécois.
social revolutions need a forum to spread the ideas that lead to change. le catalogue et la place de la révolution sociale is designed to house a collection of historic and current social revolutions of every capacity, from digital collections and written works. an exhibi-tion of the quiet revolution and its influences across the world will also be housed in the space. the place itself will act as a temporary exhibition space on the corner of saint maurice and rue mcgill that will facilitate the exchange of ideas and act as a stage for protests.

the catalogue house a collection of memory traces that provide a base for the production of future revolutions. interviews, articles, books, and live streams will show worldrevolutions and exchanges that are in progress.

mimetic tracing
the upward wrapping of crust into a point. this is manifested as elevation
in the 1950s tv became a portal to quebec, allowing the agrarian society to slowlybecome more secular and open to foreign culture. this is once again realized through the proliferation of the various social medias that provide realtime information to an evergrowing number of people around the world.
upheavalsubversion
disruptionbreaking up the pre-existing conditions that establish the status quo. manifested by
division- a separation or partitioning of form. divisions establish a base on which the idea of
choice becomes crucial. one must choose what guiding principle he or she will occupy on
a given side and start to make moves to firmly represent the qualities of the side they chose. using roundabout tactics to undermine the principles of a given social or political structure. within the realm of subversion is the formal manifestation of submergence, a burying orsuppressing of an idea or thought.
rising above a given form to deliver information to a group or collective entity.
