Designer Notes
These gardens have a tendency to be surrounded
by background urban noises so the aim of this
design, with long grasses and a water feature,
is to distract the ear from those sounds and
to focus on pleasant and calming influences.
These type of spaces are more sui ted to clean
lines to provide a sharp, modern feel.
1. Plants help absorb the sounds and dust of
the city and create a calming environment. Usea selection of tall grasses such as ZebraGrass (Miscanthus sinensis zebrinus), GiantOat (Stipa gigantea) and Bamboos. Ifplanting in containers, go for very large oneswith a wide base. This will mean the plants willmature properly and they wont get blown overin the wind.2. Use decking or paving to give your gardena designer finish with minimal effort. Makesure you use a decking stain or oil to colour
and protect wooden decking and opt for aproduct that waterproofs and protects fromUV damage such as Ronseal Perfect FinishDecking Stain.3. Water features are another good way toadd a natural feel and calming influence to asmall city garden. They are available in variousdesigns, from classical cherubs to naturaldrilled stones, and are easy to install. Itsliterally a case of putting them in position, making sure theyre level, adding water and
turning on. Most current designs come with 10metres of cable, which in a small garden shouldget you inside but if you are in doubt, call in aqualified electrician.4. Try to choose plants that offer more thanone quality to make your garden as interestingas possible think of ones that havefragrance, colour and a dramati c structure.Good examples are Heavenly Bamboo (Nandinadomestica, Winter Daphne (Daphne odoraAureomarginata) and Himalayan Honeysuckle
