A Fungus Among Us

A mushroom on its top, bigger than a tree…

Bobbing in the ocean, a life raft in the sea.

Hunkered in the fungus, like a knife in its sheath,

sits a walrus and his ivory propped up by his mighty teeth.

It’s a lonely life, adrift in this mass abyss;

where every speck on the horizon becomes a place just barely missed.

The surreality of life upon a giant shroom,

where thoughts and loneliness become your surrounding tomb.

You wait, propped against its stem, holding like a truss…

Reliving the could-of’s and would-of’s, that are the fungus among us.

What If?

What if every time a person ate a bite of cauliflower

they progressively became smarter by the hour?

What if when you ate a cauliflower head

it made all your furniture turn crimson red?

What if when you ate a piece of a floret

it made you have a giant bunny for a pet?

What if when cauliflower was even near

you became fully dressed in scuba gear?

What if when you had cauliflower in the round

you loved how fingers on a chalkboard sound?

What if just the site of the brainy mass

made you the best student in your class?

What if when cauliflower was even in your vicinity

you could live to the ripe old age of infinity?

What if when your mom made several cauliflowers

they would give you heroic super powers?

But alas, they reality is, none of this is true.

Cauliflower just smells like the sock in a homeless man’s shoe.

The Fish Whisperer: Sea Shrink

Down by the edge of the Irish Sea

lives the fish whisperer, Slick McGee.

With a wondrous reputation, and mass appeal,

relieving the stresses of cod, bass, and eel.

He stands in the surf with his mask and pole,

calming the nerves of link, skate, and sole.

For Slick, fish whispering has become an obsession,

counseling fish like a priest at confession.

What people don’t realize, and fail to think,

is that fish just want to be able to blink.

The strife of life through a constant stare

leave many a fish stressed with despair.

A fish may never have the ability to blink,

but should always have access to a seafaring shrink.

Entering the scene comes Slick McGee,

who eases the fish and calms the sea.

He’s an Irish Sea shrink with ears that care,

and a heart that can absorb a fish’s blank stare.

Freckleson Cl aires

Freckleson Claires had an obsession with bears.

He would eat like ‘em, walk like ‘em, and act like ‘em.

He would growl like ‘em, sleep like ‘em, and even attack like ‘em.

One day, his Dad surprised him at home, with a real life grizzly all for his own.

He thought what better gift for a boy, than a twin-like bear for a toy.

But grizzlies, with their teeth, claws, and thick coat of hairs

don’t really like kids dressed up as fake bears.

So when the bear came ‘round the corner and saw his fake friend

he mauled up his suit and clawed his rear-end.

The moral to this fable is as clear as day.

Real and fake should not be mixed in any way.

Yawn Fibbers

If one fakes a yawn and tries to pull someone’s leg,

they are a yawn fibber spreading fake yawns like the plague.

No one suspects their trickery from within,

as they unlock their jaw and lower their huge chin.

Their yawn is so contagious it sucks you right in,

like a mobile home in a twister or a rock that can’t swim.

There should be a law that keeps these fake yawners from yawning-

put them in the dark and keep their yawning from spawning.

These fake yawners should be trapped and turned into stew

to stop them from spreading fake yawns like the flu.

But as it is now, fake yawns gape and gleek in disguise,

and seem completely real to our innocent eyes.

So don’t get tricked by the yawning out there,

be cautious, alert, and always aware.

The Rel axing Tub

This tub, it’s meaning,

this container for cleaning.

This vessel, this can,

this upside-down pan.

This trough of soapy suds,

this excommunicator of cruds.

This vat of relaxing heat,

this warm meditative retreat.

When the bathing and cleaning is completed,

the plug in the drain is unseated.

And as the last layer of suds swirls around,

this peaceful tub makes a hilarious fart sound.

Tree Hugger

On January sixteenth, in the year 1972,

a disputed theory about trees proved to be true.

A Canadian botanist named Biffarcher Funk

invented a machine that hooked up to a trunk.

Using a technique known as electrovisisis,

he was able to manipulate a tree’s photosynthesis.

This produced a schematic of what the tree was feeling,

and what in a tree’s life was the most unappealing.

Dr. Funk found what scared trees the most

was the act of being tickled through a near-lethal dose.

People and animals climbing up and down the trunk

put all varieties of trees in a depressed-like funk.

This incredible machine, aptly named the funka-sneeze,

gave a voice to the long misunderstood trees.

As society confronted these findings face-to-face,

all creatures living learned to give trees their own space.

And as recommended by the department of arborology,

people were encouraged to give trees an apology.

So now, as we plod through our lives full of jest,

we should avoid tickling trees, so they don’t get depressed.

The Horn Inspector

Everybody’s got a gift, some are big, and some are small.

Finding that gift in your lifetime, that’s the toughest task of all.

Take for example, the inquisitive Igor Mammet,

who inspects the horns of things that walk our planet.

He didn’t choose such a skill, it’s just the gift he was given,

to inspect the tusks and antlers of all things ‘livin.

Early on when Igor saw his first horn-like projection,

he knew his skill in life and followed its direction.

He didn’t question why such a skill should even exist.

He just knew he possessed the talent and shouldn’t resist.

So all day long, from morning ‘til night,

Igor Mammet inspects every horn in his sight.

It’s a job which would leave most of us miffed,

but to Igor, it’s his calling, it’s a gift.

Pandas are lazy, like a Joe in their momma’s lap.

It’s not by chance, panda spelled backwards ends in nap.

They lay around on rocks with baggy eyes – black as night.

They’ve nearly gone extinct cuz there just too tired to fight

They get up every day, just to turn and lay the other way.

They rarely ever play, and prefer to slouch and stay.

They are definitely cute, there’s no denying that.

Like a bunny that is fat, or a lazy indoor cat.

I think the reason they’re so cozy, puffy, with their fuzzy hair,

is that, in another life, they were god’s bedside teddy bear.

I think the reason they’re vegan and eat bamboo as a treat,

is ‘cuz they’re too darn lazy to hunt for any meat.

If they were in a lazy contest, they’d snag second prize without a care.

The only one to beat them would be the sloth – by just a hair.

I’m only snooty ‘cuz I’m jealous of what they have created,

a life of lazy lounging, and sleeping unabated.

So I guess I’ll bite my lip and do what grandpa used to say;

if you can’t beat ‘em join ‘em and sleep my days away.

The Floating Dress in the Window

There is a giant bird that flew into my bathroom stall.

It landed on a stick, held by a woman tiny and small.

The woman, dressed in heels, a hat, and a white coat,

was perched on a sink as though she could float.

She prompted the cardinal, with a nod of her chin,

and the goliath-y bird, lowered the drain plug in.

When the drain was plugged she kicked the valve down,

which filled up the sink and poured to the ground.

It filled up the bathroom and flowed to the door,

went into the hall and onto the floor.

It ran for hours with no one aware,

and destroyed my house beyond repair.

My entire life savings swirled down the drain,

from a tiny posh lady and giant bird brain.

Rhino Scaffolding

Rhino scaffolding is incredibly useful; it’s a fact.

Especially when rhinos are put together, then stacked.

The possibilities are endless for anyone to see.

You could stack one, you could stack two, you could even stack three.

What makes them so perfect is their strong durable back.

It’s the optimal surface for something to stack.

Their legs are stocky and wide to make them stable,

just like a middle school shop’s welding table.

They help in many trades from big to small.

It’s the perfect equipment so the workers don’t fall.

I even saw it once used by a small team of sheep

to get up a cliff that was far too steep.

It’s a pretty rare sight and oddly amazing.

In that rare occasion where work is done up high,

think of stacked rhinos and give it a try.

SHEEP SHROUDER

Ever heard of a sheep shrouder? Well, that’s not a surprise.

He’s got a pouty pasty face and darkly smug eyes.

The shrouder is an odd little boy who puts covers on ewes.

He’s hard to miss with his quirky hat and puffy black shoes.

Because of his antisocial attitude, I think he’s kinda rude.

He says he’s just covering sheep that are nude.

Who knew a sheep, with his puffy little cloud,

would prefer to be covered in a white canvas shroud?

So next time you see sheep in a field at play,

don’t be a voyeur, just turn and look away.

The Moootian

A stroll or walk in my yard

will wonder you through gardens of chard.

And in that chard, kinda towards the back

lives a space cow with spots of black.

He’s called a Moootian cuz he came from the moon.

Like a silly cow on some 50’s cartoon.

He’s lived on my property since I was kid,

wearing a space helmet just like a lid.

He looks like the cows you see all over the place

except, I’m pretty sure this fella came from space.

Belief in Martians and aliens can be pretty hard,

‘til you find one moonwalking across your backyard.

UPSIDE-DOWN TAPIR CAPER

A room in my house has the most unusual feature,

upon its ceiling lives an upside-down creature.

My Granny says it’s an odd toed tapir

she remembers reading ‘bout it in some zoology paper.

Since the first day I unlocked the door with my key,

this unblinking tapir has been staring at me.

He’s fairly smelly and quiet for his size.

Has wiry piggish hair and rhinoceros eyes.

My friends and family think it’s completely unappealing

to have a tapir cohabitating on my ceiling.

I’ve become quite comfortable with this creature above my head,

and the comfort its presence has been able to spread.

When I move in with my girlfriend at the beginning of spring,

I hope she’s ok with the tapir I bring.

I can’t leave it here all alone and deserted.

She’ll just have to love a tapir inverted.

THE ART OF WAR

While on a trip, my dog pulled the ultimate coup de grâce.

Back at the house, he orchestrated a coup d’état.

He took control of my domicile; it’s a total loss.

Now he thinks he’s the Capo di Tutti – the mafia boss.

He sent me a text saying “Thanks for the kibble – it’s been fun,

I’m the new Don now, your time here is done.”

He put up a fence, with a gate and a guard,

kicked the cat to the curb and cemented the yard.

All my stuff was in a heap at the edge of the street.

The coup had been flawless – a total defeat.

I’m not going back, it’s just not wise.

The dog’s a goombah and full of lies.

I know it seems far-fetched for a dog to pull off a coup,

but believe it’s true and could happen to you.

I share this info to bring it to light,

what can happen to anyone in the middle of the night.

Don’t trust your dog as far as you can throw it.

They’re planning their coup and they know not to show it.

OUT AND ABOUT

I saw the strangest thing, something you don’t see every day…

An out and about rabbit who was proud to be gay.

I knew he was gay ‘cuz he told me with pride,

and his stance and persona matched him inside.

He was wrapped in a fluffy scarf, slightly unfurled,

with wavy black and white fur, ever so lightly curled.

He has his own hat, a kind I’ve never seen,

made of soft elegant fabric with a satiny sheen.

He wore a broach, which, on a rabbit is quite bizarre,

and puttered around in a bright miniature car.

I don’t know what was stranger that day,

a rabbit driving a car, or a rabbit who says he is gay.

MYSOPHOBIA

Who’s afraid of the earth? Who’s afraid of the ground?

How crazy unrealistic does that even sound?

How can you live on a planet so big, beautiful, and round,

and be scared of its gravity always pushing you down?

There is a pudgy pig who refuses to put hooves on this planet of fools.

He walks around precariously on stilts made of tools.

He won’t eat root veggies and slimy worms make him squirm -

anything that touches the ground, to him is a germ.

He lives up on stilts, his only safe place,

dreaming of one day traveling to space.

While drifting in orbit around our planet’s huge girth,

he imagines separating from the dirt that is earth.

A pig afraid of wallowing in the soils below

is the saddest plight a swine could know.

IDITAROD

I’ve decided to enter a team in the Iditarod race.I won’t settle for anything less than first place.

I’ve got a theory on this race and how it can be won,it’s got nothing to do with dogs and how fast they can run.

When you assemble a group for one common goal,it’s not about individual talent, but the group as a whole.

The only issue I’m having as I test out my team,is the musher I’ve chosen isn’t so lean.

He’s so good at mushing – and is the leader we need,but his size does seem to affect our overall speed.

To compensate for such an unlucky hurdle,I think I’ll just add a super-sized turtle.
