Types of Soil Land and Water
Unit
Let’s think back… what is a property?
• A property tells something about an
object that helps identify it, such as
color, texture, shape, and size!
Think of adjectives to describe these
different forms of matter!
Properties of Gravel
• Big • Hard
• Tiny rocks of different sizes
• Doesn’t clump • Water goes
through it
Properties of Sand
• Large • Rough
• Rocks and Shells
• Crumbly • Crunchy Sound • Spreads Out
Properties of Clay
• Small • Red
• See it on fingers • Slight smell • Clumps when
you pinch it • Soft
Properties of Humus
• Tiny roots • Rich with Plant
and Animals• Dark color
• Black • Wet • Soft
• Won’t Clump
• What types of soil would be washed away first? Think about this
component’s properties that would make it so easily washed away!
• Think back to the pictures from yesterday’s stations. What is the
relationship between land and water? How is this related to this
lesson?
Think about it…
Which types of these soils would be the best for plants to grow? Think
about each of their properties!
Why are some of the gravel particles rounded?
