STATISTICS: MURDERS ON THE INCREASE IN THE PROVINCE
Forum tofight gangcrimeGARY VAN DYK
@gvdcapejazz
Curbing Gang activity must become a prior-ity.This is the feeling frompolice and the pub-
lic with news of the increase in gang relatedcrimes. With the national annual crime statistics
released by national police minister Nkosi-nathi Nhleko and national police commis-sioner Riah Phiyega last week, gang activitycame under the spotlight with the BishopLavis, Delft and Elsies River clusters follow-ing closely on the heels of Manenberg wherecommunities are most affected. These facts came to light after Western
Cape provincial police commissioner Lu-itenant General Arno Lamoer revealed that18% of murders in the province were gang-related.Giving a breakdown of the province’s
crime statistics earlier thisweek, he said the12.8% increase in murder was a major con-cern.Lamoer said the majority of the murders
occurred in Manenberg, Mitchell’s Plain,Bishop Lavis, Delft and Elsies River.“We are aware of the crime stats as it’s a
great concern for us, especially themurders.I think we’re really trying to do our utmostto bring that figure down. But we can onlybring it down with the assistance of all roleplayers in our communities,” he said.Lamoer said gang-related violence was al-
so to blame for a spike in other categoriesof crime such as attempted murder anddrug-related offences. He believes the increased levels of crime
in theWesternCape are driven by substance
abuse.About R122 million worth of drugs was
confiscated in the 2013/2014 financial year,he said.Lamoer added that the recent spate of pro-
tests in the province had also drained policeresources.“This really divertsmyresources to differ-
ent areas. When there are protest actions, roadsare closedandwehave todeploypoliceofficers to go and look after the grievancesof community members instead of fightingcrime.”On Friday, national police commissioner
Riah Phiyega released the annual crime sta-tistics for the past financial year. Accordingto the stats, themurder rate increased by 5%and attempted murder hiked 4.6%. Houserobberies increased by 7.4% and robberieswith aggravating circumstances went up by12.7%.There was an overall decrease of 4.9% in
sexual assault cases, with a 6.3% decline inrape. In Elsies River police are already busy
with plans to play their part in curbing gang-sterism by initiating a project to empoweryouth at risk.Colonel Zingisa Manci, acting station
commander, was not surprised that the sta-tistics showed an increase in gang activity.“In recent months we have picked up that
most suspects arrested in connection withgang related crimes have been youth,” shesaid.“The problem is that the older gangsters
are using the youngsters thinking that theycan avoid the judicial system when it comesto minors.

Ophthalmologist Dr Aritha Du Bruyn bonds with Zoe Mjoli after performing a free eye testfor her at the Athlone School for the Blind in BellvilleSouth. Du Bruyn, from Inkosi AlbertLuthuli Central Hospital in Durban, took time out from her mentorship programme at theRed Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital to assist with free onsite testing for learners atthe school. An organisation concerned with the he-alth of babies recently reminded mo-thers-to-be not to consume alcohol du-ring pregnancy.Refraining from alcohol prevents Foe-
tal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), was themessage conveyed by community orga-nisation, Early Years Services (EYS).Their awareness message was part of
International Foetal Alcohol SyndromeDay celebrated on Tuesday 9 September.EYS, a non profit organisation, con-
ducts Foetal Alcohol Syndrome Disor-der (FASD) training across the Peninsu-la. The training includes communityawareness, prevention, and interventi-on.In celebration of Foetal Alcohol Syn-
drome Day the group took to the streetsof Athlone where they were joined byconcerned motorists at the corner ofKlipfontein Road and Vanguard Drive.Drivers hooted to spread the awarenessmessage, director Avril Cupido said.“Women who are sexually active and
not using effective contraception mightget pregnant and expose their baby to al-cohol before they realize they are preg-nant.“More than half of pregnancies in
South Africa are unplanned,” she said.Avril saidFAS is completely preventa-
ble.“Despite myths, there is no scientific
evidence available setting a “safe”amount of alcohol that will not affect thedeveloping foetus.“Alcohol in the mother’s blood passes
to the baby through the placenta and theumbilical cord. When a woman drinksalcohol, so does her baby.“There is also no safe time to drink du-
ring pregnancy, including before a wo-man knows she is pregnant,” Avril said.FAS can impact children’s physical,
mental, behavioural and cognitive deve-lopment, she said.“To prevent the disorder, a woman
should not drink alcohol while she ispregnant or if she suspects she is preg-nant. A woman often does not know thatshe is pregnant for up to four to sixweeks after conception.“If a woman is drinking alcohol du-
ring pregnancy, it is never too late tostop. This is because the brain growth ta-kes place throughout pregnancy. Thesooner a woman stops drinking, the sa-fer it will be for her and her baby,” Avrilconcluded.
‘Don’t drink whenpregnant’ is themessage for moms
Berenice Isaacs, Natalia Shosha, Raphael Kolbee, Avril Cupido, Xoliswa Mpulu, OlwethuMxhamli, Veronica Williams and Nerine Grainger from community based organisation EarlyYears Services (EYS) were all part of the group who celebrated International FoetalAlcohol Syndrome Day on Tuesday 9 September.

“That is one of themain reasons whywewantto form this multi-sectoral youth forumagainst youth gangs but we cannot do italone.”Communications officer at Elsies River, Es-
merelda Pheiffer, said thepolicewanted to calla meeting with all interested parties and or-ganisationswho could play a part in this strat-egy.“This must be a concerted effort from all
who think that they can make a difference tohelp youth get onto the right path.“With this initiative we want to focus on a
variety of factors that affect youth or leadthem into a life of crime. Once they get in-volved with gangs it’s difficult to get out.“We must now start looking at all the fac-
tors, starting with parents getting the properparenting skills to cope with children who be-come involved with crime and drugs, to acti-vating programmes to show them that thereare positive alternatives.”V Organisations or individuals who would like to be partof this initiative can call Sgt Pheiffer on 082 411 1892or Sgt Fred Smith on 082 302 8602.

Health centre stripped bythieves after security cutGARY VAN DYK
@gvdcapejazz
Budget cuts at the Kasselsvlei Commu-nityHealthCentre has led to the build-ing becoming a target for thieves who
have started stripping the building. The cuts are a result of decisions taken
by the Department of Health and ProvincialLegislature, impacting public health facili-ties, staff and patients.Securitywas a victim of these budget cuts
and the result is that criminals in the areahave declared open house on the facility. On Friday morning patients had to enter
the chilly facility with little warmth to com-fort them as they waited to be helped - someof the airconditioners had been stolen ordamaged as the wiring was removed. The availability of hot water was also a
problem as geyser piping had been dam-aged.
Security disasterGafsa Jonathan, secretary of the Bellville
South Community Forum, that they fore-saw some of these problems and have arepetitioning the authorities to remedy thesituation.“Removal of the security spells disaster
for this facility, and here are the results,”said Jonathan.“Even before this, our facilitywas the tar-
get of vandalism, theft and burglary, butmost recently the water pipes were stolenas well as three of the air-conditioners.“This morning I was informed that more
air-conditioners were stolen during thenight.”She also pointed out that the air-condi-
tioners were not there for the patients com-fort alone but played a vital part in medi-cine storage.“Many of the medicines in the pharmacy
have to be stored at the correct tempera-tures, chronic medicines and vaccines be-come ineffective otherwise.
Lack of hygiene“If the facility is not able to store these
medicines and vaccines (which will be thecase in summer), adults and children alikewill have to go somewhere else to receivethem.”With regard to the stolen water pipes, she
pointed out that water is not available inconsultation rooms, which means nursesand doctor cannot wash hands after seeinga patient..“Some staff members have been victims
of assault, even with the security present, but now that security has been withdrawncompletely, they do not feel safe at all.“Individuals in this community are re-
sponsible for the crime committed againstthe public health facility which serves thecommunity of Bellville South and sur-rounds, and it is the people of this communi-ty who will unfortunately have to suffer theconsequences.“The community is urged to report these
individuals and put a stop to theirmindless, criminal acts.”Provincial health said the actual building
is owned by the city and theywere responsi-ble for security and maintenance.“We can confirm that the facility has so-
lar geysers and the pipes were cut on theroofwhich caused the lack ofwater. It is ourunderstanding that the city is attending tothe matter,” the department stated.“I can also confirm that in fact the budget
was not cut, but increased with R721 000 forthe current financial year.”HealthMECTheuns Botha said the trans-
fer of personal primaryhealth care servicesfrom the city to province will assist in ad-dressing such problems.

This group of youngsters enjoy theirnew Smart Park in Blikkiesdorp.
Smart parks provide safeplay areas for childrenThe City of Cape Town’s parks departmenthas taken the idea of “smart living” out-doors and into public open spaces. Its “Smart Parks” concept is a World De-
sign Capital project which uses design-ledthinking to transform thewaypublic spacesare developed.Three projects have been piloted in Blik-
kiesdorp, Khayelitsha and Gugulethu toprovide local communities with innovativerecreational spaces that cater for all agesand which residents can truly call theirown. This new concept looks to provide high
quality, attractive park facilities that areboth structurally sound and creatively de-signed. The Symphony Way Park in Blik-kiesdorp is the first of these parks, and wasofficially opened to the public on Tuesday9 September.“Community involvement is critical if
these parks are going to cater for the com-munity’s specific needs and interests,” saidmaycomember for community services andspecial projects, Belinda Walker.“Wewant to develop creative and fun spa-
ces that appeal to the communities inwhichthey are situated and Smart Parks allow us
to do just that.”The features at the SymphonyWay Smart
Park include paving, low-wall seating, largetrees to provide shade and create a sense ofplace, as well as picnic sites that add valueto the park.It has also seen the transformationof a va-
cant area into a comfortable and interestingcommunal space where people can meetand relax, and importantly, where childrencan play in a safe environment. The city parks fepartment hopes to ensu-
re that accessibility, safety and convenien-ce are associated with the Smart Parks con-cept, with direct benefit to communities.“Each Smart Park will include custom-
made play areas with robust play equip-ment, incorporating the latest ideas aroundcreating a fun experience that sparks theimagination of children and encouragesthem to be active.“City parks is conscious of the immense
value parks have in neighbourhoods whereresidents have no or very little garden spa-ce. Smart Parks will be developed in com-munities where we have identified a needfor additional recreational spaces,” conclu-ded Walker.

Bellville South police has noted an increasein incidents of violence at schools and wantto put a stop to it.
W/O Ian Williams, communication offic-er at Bellville South police, said this hascome about as a result of some youths be-coming involved in cliques which fightabout girlfriends and territory.
“It is also clear that some adults are usingthe learners to sell drugs for them, especial-ly those who belong to gangs,” he said.
“We call on parents to speak to their chil-dren andwarn them of involvement in suchcliques.
“In one incident after a fight at school alearner ran home and came back the follow-ing day with friends carrying golf clubs, hockey sticks and other weapons with theintention of a revenge attack.
“They were, however, arrested and
charged with possession of dangerousweapons. This is unacceptable behaviourand will not be tolerated by police.”
Williams wanted parents and caregiversto take note of some tips to keep their chil-dren on a positive path in life:
V Encourage your child to report all inci-dents of bullying, violence or name-callingto teachers, the principal or yourself.
V Discourage the taking of the law intoyour own hands.
V Teach conflict management, that dif-ferences can be talked out and resolved.
V Familiarize yourself and your childwith the school rules and encourage themto obey these rules.
V Encourage your child to partake insports or take up a hobby or other empower-ing and educational activities.
V Know your child’s friends.V Encourage your child to not associate
with friends who are not also learners atschool.

A local church is advertisingthe Vleis Fees (Meat Festival)in Durbanville. I find this sosad, religion should be teach-ing people compassion, notcelebrating the death ofanimals. If you just investigate for
yourself how badly animalssuffer in industry – in theirconfinement, what is done tothem there, in transport wheremany are injured, and thestress of queuing to be killed -they suffer tremendously.I challenge people who seek
compassion from God to showthat same compassion to theanimals at our mercy. We donot need to support the meatindustry. We can live healthylives on a plant-based diet.Even if you just reduce theamount of meat you eat, youwill reduce the suffering. Please choose compassion.

It is sad to see that mosttownship schools are notequipped with sporting equip-ment. The first stage of thisprocess is to maintain sportsgrounds at schools. At themoment there is not a singleschool in Wesbank with well-maintained sports grounds. Onewonders what activities learn-ers participate in. Many peoplehave become professional sportspersons through sports whichthey started at an early age.One cannot understand why theacademic part of learningcannot be balanced with sport,as it contributes towards thechild’s growth. If South Africa is to become a
great sporting nation, youthsshould be exposed to all sport-ing codes at primary andsecondary level. They will thenbecome professionals at seniorand tertiary levels.Competitive sports among
schools can bring the best outof these young minds – on andoff the field. School governingbodies should engage with localand provincial authorities toensure school playgrounds arewell maintained. There is so much talent in
townships, but there is limitedinfrastructure. Every sportneeds discipline and disciplinecan be transformed to theclassroom.Youths are into drugs and
gangsterism because they haveso much idle time after school.
This is the time they should beusing to practice their sports.

As many pensioners know,Cattle Baron very kindlyprovides retired citizens with awonderful eat-as-much-as-you-like buffet at a reduced ratethree days a week.On Tuesday 9 September I
was at Cattle Baron Durban-ville and could not believe myeyes. An elderly couple sat with
enough food in front of them tofeed six people.I couldn’t believe when they
once more piled their plateshigh with mainly meat. It wasso much I just knew they weretaking food home. How right I was... Back at the
table the women piled all themeat of both their plates ontoher side plate, held it over herbag and all the meat disap-peared into it, while herhusband carried on eating.I was so disgusted in them I
could hardly eat. How canpeople abuse such a wonderfulgift and also spoil it for otherdecent pensioners? Sadly, it’sthanks to people like this thatothers have to suffer.

Heritage Dayis a chancefor us to uniteToday is Heritage Day, also for about thelast ten years known as national braaiday. The day actually commemorates the
famous Zulu King Shaka, who wasinstrumental in uniting Zulu clans into acohesive nation, just as Heritage Dayencourages South Africans to cometogether to celebrate the rich culturalheritage and the diversity of our rainbownation. Is that what we are doing? Standing
together? A lot can be said about how farwe have come, but a lot still needs to bedone. And this should come from ourside, we as the citizens of this amazingcountry. Here a government cannot helpus. If anything, the more the governmentunderperforms, the more we have reasonto stand up and unite against corruption, unfairness, bad service and the rest ofthe items on the service list.We should stand together, even as
members of different political parties, different beliefs and different cultures. We should focus on our common ground– the fact that we are South Africansliving in a country all of us love andcherish. A country we want our childrento grow up in and flourish in safetywhile grabbing endless opportunities. In the words of Nelson Mandela in the
first Heritage Day speech: When thegovernment decided to make this anational day, “we did so because weknew that our rich and varied culturalheritage has a profound power to helpbuild our new nation”. Amen.

Parents must be aware of whattheir children are getting up to- especially when it comes to theabuse of alcohol. That is the message that Dha-

which a South African girl hasher first drink is 13; for a boy,it’s 11,” he said.“In South Africa and many
other countries, underagedrinking is a widespread prob-lem, with often serious conse-quences.“Young people who drink are
more likely to be the victims ofviolent crime, to be involved inalcohol-related traffic acci-dents, and to have depressionand anxiety. Other risky behav-iours are also linked to earlydrinking,” Christians said.He also pointed out that there
were a number of factors affect-ing the risk of developing adrinking problem.“These include genetics,
where a teen with an alcoholicsibling or parent is four timesmore likely to develop a prob-lem with alcohol than someonewithout such a family history.“Alcohol problems often go
hand in hand with mentalhealth problems such as depres-sion, bipolar disorder, anxiety, and schizophrenia.“Personality traits also play a
big part, where teenagers be-lieve alcohol makes it easier to
socialize. They also tend todrink more than those whodon’t believe that alcohol loos-ens their social inhibitions.“Then there is also the influ-
ence of family and peers. Teensare at greater risk for develop-ing alcohol-related problemswhen alcohol is readily availa-ble at home or among their peergroup, and if drunkenness is ac-ceptable.”Christians also pointed out
that it is vital as a parent, grand-parent, teacher, or friend, tospeak to our youth.“You have a major impact on
the choices that the children inyour life make, especially dur-ing the pre-teen and early teenyears.“Talking to young people
openly and honestly aboutdrinking is also vitally impor-tant. Delaying the age at whichyoung people take their firstdrink lowers their risk of be-coming problem drinkers.“That’s reason enough to talk
to the teenagers in your lifeabout alcohol, but it’s not the on-ly one.“They must know about the
harmful effects on their devel-oping brains and bodies. How itaffects their judgement, oftenleading to risky behaviour, making them vulnerable to sex-ual coercion.“Teenagers who drink are
more likely to develop behav-ioural problems, includingstealing, fighting, and skippingschool. Most importantly, un-derage drinking is also illegal.”V For more information about hisproject with youth and parents call074 998 4997 or email ftaro.mada@gmail.com.

GARY VAN DYK@gvdcapejazz
A journey into jazz has taken a youngmusician onto major world stages asthe guitarist for SA legend Hugh
Masekela. While making music with this legend,
Cape Flats guitarist Cameron Ward is alsoonahighcelebrating the launchofhis debutCD, but has not forgotten the act of kindnessthat set him on his career path.Music has always been a part of his life
while growing up in Lotus River raised byhis mom, along with his younger brotherand sister.“Mymomis a teacher andhas always sup-
ported my love for music,” he said on aquick visit to Cape Town between a heavytouring schedule with Masekela.“Like many musicians, my music started
in the churchand Iwas sevenwhen I startedplaying drums and then got into bass guitarand piano.”The motivation for jazz happened when
a friend introduced him to themusic of Jim-my Dludlu.“The first song I heard from him was
Motherland, and I knew that the guitar hadto be my instrument of choice,” he says.Cameron heard about the legendaryMon-
dayNight JamSessions at Swingers inWet-ton and started attending on a regular basis– another life changing moment.(From a personal point this is when I got
to know this young guitarist and clearly re-member him knocking our ears for a sixwhen he got going. – Gary van Dyk)Via these sessionshe got to hear about the
Jazzathon at the Waterfront where Jimmywas one of the headline acts.“I knew I had to be there and went with
one of my uncles,” he said.“We were right in front and I just took in
everything that Jimmy did that night. Thenmy uncle decided he was going to try andget Jimmy to meet me.“I was so excited when it happened and
I was very shy when I got to meet him. Ithink I just froze but Jimmy spoke to me asI told him about my dreams in music.“I don’t know what I said but Jimmy said
that he saw something special in me. Hewanted to buy me a guitar!”That Monday Cameron met Dludlu at a
store in Plumstead and bought the young-ster a guitar.“Jimmy then came to my mom and got
her to enrol me in themusic college Promptin Athlone, where I studied music for thenext two years,” he says.Since those beginnings the young player
has paid his dues in the business and start-ed performing with some of the big nameson the local scene, always impressing thepunters with his performances. Then there was the next major move.“From out of the blue I got a call from
HughMasekela’smanager, I think he heardmeperformwith saxmanMoreiraChongui-ca,” Cameron explains. The rest as they sayis history. While there is always a heavytouring schedule, Cameron always had adream to release his own album, and thatdream has now come true.“It took four years but it’s done,” he says
excitedly. The album is about what the mu-sic has brought me in my life - So Much Joy- that is the title. Itmeans a lot tome, it talksaboutwhat I have been through inmymusi-cal career.”He said the CD is available but he still
wants to host a launch concert in CapeTown when there is a break from touring.V To buy the CD Cameron invites you to messagehim on Facebook, follow him on twitter at @wardcameronward or call 083 322 3909 or Jason on 0799026428.

Domestic workers are the unsung heroinesin most homes around South Africa. Theyare the housekeepers, they take care of ba-sic maintenance in the home, they cook, they are child minders, some do the garde-ning – they generally play an integral partin making sure everything runs smoothlyin the home.Hirsch’s, who hold regular training sessi-
ons on appliance maintenance in each oftheir branches for domesticworkers, wouldlike to acknowledge these stalwarts in thehome by holding a “DomesticWorker of themonth” competition.TygerBurger cameonboard as the compe-
tition’s media sponsor. The monthly winners will receive a
Hirsch’s voucher, hamper from UnileverandHirsch’s, and a certificate. Their nameswill also go forward for the title DomesticWorker of the Year, which carries a prizeof R5000 and a bed and base set.Commenting on the reason for the the
competition, company COO MargaretHirsch, said domestic workers were too of-ten taken for granted.“I could never cope with my work load
and the amount of travelling that I do if Ididn’t have a fantastic domestic worker tohelp me.“They take care of everything, from fil-
ling the gas bottles to making sure the postis scanned through to me wherever I am.“As working women we rely on our do-
mestic workers more and more and with alittle bit of training they can upskill them-selves. That’s the object of the exercise, tohelp them thrive and grow as individuals.”If youwould like tonominate your domes-
tic worker for the monthly competition, goto www.tygerburger.co.za to download theform, or go to Hirsch’s in Koeberg Road,Milnerton and pick up an entry form.Write a 100 word motivation on why they
deserve the title of Domestic Worker of theYear, add a picture and drop it off atHirsch’s or scan and email the completedform and picture to stacey@hirschs.co.za.The closing date for entries for the Octo-
ber title is 22 October. The October winnerwill be announced in the 29 October editionof TygerBurger.V For more information, contact Stacey van Rensburg on 021 528 6700 or stacey@hirschs.co.za.

Rocco aims to nurture new talent
Rocco van Rooyen in action during the recent Commonwealth Games in Scotland.PHOTO: GETTY IMAGES
STEHAN SCHOEMAN
Although Rocco van Rooyen is only 21years old, he has successfully compet-ed at the Commonwealth Games and
numerous international events abroad andon the African continent. The Kuils River resident is now on a new
mission to share his experience and tech-nique with others.“I have worked with some great coaches
in the past who helped me get to where I amtoday. Locally I worked with Frans du Toitand Daniel Damon.“A few years ago Imet Kari Ihalainenwho
is the headcoach of Finland. Finland is basi-cally the authority on javelin. I still workclosely with Kari and I try to go over for atraining camp once a year.
Knowledge to share“Although there is still much I would like
to achieve, I feel that I have a lot of knowl-edge to sharewith current andaspiring jave-lin throwers.I have worked with Bellville, Edgemead
and Durbanville high schools in the past. Itgives me great satisfaction to help young upand coming throwers and see their progress.
One of my highlights was competing at theMTBS in Bellville whilst I was still a scholarat Bellville High school. It’s just such a greatevent and I would like to help schools’ jave-lin throwers reach their potential. There isno doubt there is a lot of talent out there thatneeds to be nurtured,” said Rocco.Rocco placed sixth overall at the recent
Commonwealth Games in Scotland. That isnot bad for a rookie, and if you take into ac-count that he competed with a grade 1 liga-ment tear in his elbow, it makes his placingeven more impressive.
Overwhelming experience“That experience was pretty overwhelm-
ing, to compete in front of 60 000 people andmillions of people watching on television. My goal is to be in tip top physical shapecome the next Commonwealth Games andOlympics if I get chosen.“Being a good competitive javelin thrower
is so much more that just throwing. Youhave to dedicate some time in the gym, workon your speed and explosiveness. It’s thewhole package that needs to be up to scratchto compete on the highest level.V Contact Rocco on roccobvr@gmail.com for moreinformation.

RACING: KILLARNEY A BATTLEGROUND FOR TOP SPOTS
Hot shot fights for crown
SA Production Car Championship leader Johan Fourie is seen here in his BMW 335i during anearlier round of the series.
ADRIAN PHEIFFER
Northern suburbs superstar JohanFou-rie is set to smoke Killarney on Satur-day as he takes on the rest of SouthAf-
rica in his bid to be 2014 national Bridgesto-ne Production Car champion.Although he leads the title chase and will
have a home circuit advantage, the BMW335i driver admits things have not gone allhis ownway this season. There is the doublethreat posed by the second and third placedall-wheel-drive Audi S4’s of former champi-on Michael Stephen and the young GennaroBonafede who have ganged up on him thisseason and are only a few points in arrears.Behind them, the T class is a race within
a race as GraemeNathan (VWGolf GTi), Ga-ry Formato (Ford Focus ST) and MichaelvanRooyen (ChevCruze), battle for the over-all lead. There is also growing interest in the En-
genVolkswagen Cup events where the 15 ye-ar old Sheldon van der Linde moved into anarrow overall championship lead at theend of the sixth round at Zwartkops, last
month. Although still in grade 9 and not yetold enough to drive on public roads, theGau-teng youngster has shown tremendous ma-turity in this hard fought series and questi-ons arebeingaskedabouthis possible futurein the international arena. However, he has to deal with hotshots like
Jano van der Westhuizen, John Craig Jnr,Jon Aberdien, Jurie Swart and lady driverAndrea Bate. It won’t be easy.On the flipside, SASports andGTV8’swill
bring back memories of great races of thepast as drivers like reigning champion BigBen Morgenrood (Indy Oil Ford Mustang),Terry Wilford (Hot Wheels Ford Mustang),Franco diMatteo andMackieAdlam (AdlamAuto Jaguar V8), rev on the grid. There are also national single seater ra-
cing car events for Midas Formula VW 2.li-tre and Formula 1600, as well as Power Se-ries participation by theMidas Clubman ca-tegory and Mike Hopkins Powersports,Clubman and Classic motorcycles. Finalpractice and qualifying takes place from08:00 in the morning, with the first of the 14races on the programme due off at 11:05.
SAREL BURGER
