5 series are robbing mini-markets all
over Cape Town.
Thevehicle is allegedly linked to twoother
armedrobberies inConstantia andwas lurk-
ing around inMonteVista on Sunday 15 Sep-
tember.
The suspicious vehicle stopped at the OK-
mini-market on Monte Vista Boulevard
around 21:00 when the suspects entered the
shop.
A customer, whowaswithdrawingmoney
from the ATM, was pushed aside and forced
to withdraw an undisclosed sum of money
by one of the suspects.
Eleven other customers were also robbed
and the suspects stole cash from the tills, as
well as boxes of cigarettes.
The brazen robbers also took cellphones
and other valuable items from their victims.
As they fled the scene in the BMW, which
did not have registration plates, District
Watchs shift commanderAndre duToitwas
informed of the incident.
He rushed to the scene and pursued the
suspects and he received help fromWarrant
Officer Trevor Fester of the Goodwood po-
lice station.
They cordoned off the area but could not
find the suspects.
To date no arrests have been made.
BMW
Confusion remains as towhether the same
BMW is connected to all the incidents.
Warrant Officer Wayne Theunis of the
Goodwood police station said some of the
robberies are connected.
Our office can confirm that this is the on-
ly incident where a silver BMW was in-
volved in theMonte Vista area, however, ac-
cording to our information a silver BMW
was involved in similar incidents in Both-
asig, Theunis said.
In other areas such as Plattekloof and
Bothasig shopping centres as well as other
buildings are broken into during the late
evening.
Most times these buildings are being en-
tered via the roof.
Residents should be on the lookout for any
suspicious behaviour and report it to the po-
lice as soon as possible.
Mark Horstman, spokesperson for DW
said sharing information with police is im-
portant.
Security companies should not be shar-
ing information on their own, residents
must also be involved. There are all kinds
of rumours about the BMW, but nothing has
been confirmed, he said.

Gemeenskapslede in
Goodwood kan positie-

wagte wees.
TydensCliveJustus,
subraadvoorsitter, se
onlangse subraadver-

slag gedoen oor die toe-
komstige projekte wat
onder andere die om-
gewing van Good-

Kalksteenfontein, Pa-
row en Beaconvale se
opgradering insluit.
Bykomende gesubsi-
dierde behuising vir
1 000mense gaan in Elsiesriver-industria na-
by die Elsiesrivierstasie gebou word.
Volgens die laaste verslag is 28 terreine ge-
identifiseer, waarvan twee vir die behui-
singsprojek goedgekeur is.
siliteit in Valhallapark.
Onderhandelings oor hierdie projek sal
weer in November behandel word.
Die junior stadsraad se verteenwoordigers
het ook die vergadering bygewoon.
Kesley Williams van die Horskool Elsies-

Hierdie bome sal skadu aan die sportvelde
bied.

An alleged drag-race organiser, who was
driving at more than 200km/h on the N1,
was arrested on Thursday 12 September.
City of Cape Town spokesperson for traf-
fic, Richard Coleman said an operation fo-
cusing on illegal drag-racing yielded great
success when officers arrested the suspect
who they had been monitoring for some
time. He was allegedly weaving through
cars at high speed when traffic officers
chased him all the way onto the M5 on
Thursday evening. The suspect drove
recklesslyuntil hewas stoppedby theoffic-
ers just before the Athlone turn-off.
Coleman says the police and traffic de-
partment have been monitoring the sus-
pect for some time as they were informed
that he was constantly organising illegal
races in Athlone, Grassy Park, Bellville
and the Elsies River regions.
We constantly played cat and mouse
with him. He organised illegal races all
over and we were trying to figure out
where the next racewould be.While traffic
officers were operating in the area they
recognised the number plate of the vehicle
and followed the car. At that time the sus-
pectwas driving over the legal limit,Cole-
man says. He added, the suspect was found
to be in possession of a firearm and was
under the influence of alcohol as well.
He was arrested just after 21:15 and was
taken to the Athlone police station where
hewas chargedwith drunken and reckless
driving.Constable Zita Norman, spokes-
person of the Athlone police station says
the firearm, which is licensed, was confis-
cated by the police.
The suspect appeared in the Athlone
MagistratesCourt onFriday 12September
and was released on bail.

ousebreaking, theft of a concretemix-
er, ransacking of houses and daylight
robbery.
What has become of Goodwood?
A recent report by the Goodwood police
station revealed shocking information as
crimes escalated far beyond what is expect-
ed in only a weeks timeframe as criminals
let loose in the area.
On Thursday 19 September at 10:00 Con-
stable Steven Drury reacted to a house-
breaking call by a resident while it was in
progress in Goulburn Street, Goodwood.
Two suspects ransacked the garage of one
of his neighbours in the street and left the
premises, pushing a stolen wheelbarrow.
Drury patrolled the area in search of the
suspects and found them in Vanguard
Drive.
Drury arrested the suspects and took
them to the Goodwood police station where
they were questioned.
Investigating their alibis the police
phoned the owner of the house.
He arrivedand identified the stolen items
as his property.
The 25- and 26-year-old suspectswhowere
previously arrested appeared in the Good-
woodMagistrates court the sameweek. On
the same day four thieves decided to steal
a cement mixer in Table View.
Constable Siyabulela Adam monitored a
radio announcement at 11:30 when a re-
quest for the arrest of the suspects was giv-
en.
Arrests
The suspects were allegedly driving a
white Isuzu bakkie in Vanguard Drive.
On the corner of Vanguard and Frans
Conradie roads, Adam saw the bakkie with
the cement mixer.
He stopped the bakkie and arrested the
four suspects for possession of stolen prop-
erty.
The suspects will appear in the Cape
Town Magistrates Court soon.
Earlier that week started with an arrest
of a suspect on Monday 16 September after
he had broken into a house in Hibiscus
street in Tygerdal at about 12:00.
Constable Vivian Fortuin spotted the
man as he was walking out of the yard.
A sliding door had been forced open and
the house was ransacked.
A television set and other equipment was
packed, almost as if it was ready to be col-
lected.
W/O Jacques Pieters and W/O Quinton
Nortje joined Fortuin and interrogated the
suspect.
They found that therewereoriginally five
suspects who were working together.
Further investigation revealed that four
of the suspects were driving a Toyota Avan-
za.
They found out that these four suspects
who were also in the house, were wearing
school uniforms.
These suspects driving the Avanza were
apparently on their way to collect the fifth
suspect who was in custody.
The officers then went to the original
scene of the crimewhere theywaited for the
Avanza to arrive.
And the suspects did not disappoint.
They duly arrived on time to collect their
partner and the rest of the stolen property.
The five suspects all from Langa, aged be-
tween 17 and 25 were arrested for house-
breaking and appeared in the Goodwood
Magistrates Court the next day.
Goodwood police also want to urge the
community to be on the look-out for three
to five suspects who target houses.
In another incident a man was arrested
after trying to rob a woman of her posses-
sions in broad daylight at Vasco station.

Upgradeswill follow to theDeGrendel Sub-
council area.
This after the councillors and subcouncil
manager together with De Grendel Sub-
council chairman JamesVos toured the ar-
ea to determine areas which are in need of
upliftment. They visited council facilities,
parks, halls, and other places which give
cause for concern.
The tour was an enlightening experi-
ence. We had the opportunity to see where
efficient work was being done and good
services being rendered, but also to ob-
serve the shortcomings and problems, and
to better understand the challenges that
faced some facilities, says Vos.
Vos noted down a few aspects which will
be changed in future:
VIncreased dumping and littering on
public open spaces.
VVandalism and lack of regular mainte-
nance of community centres.
VUnauthorised increase of informal trad-
ing activities which also results in haphaz-
ard and dangerous vehicular movement
along Plattekloof Road (M14) from Both-
asig towards Panorama and along Old
Paarl Road in Bellville.
VOvergrown green open spaces in
Doordekraal and especially the issue of the
damsandusage of the footpaths in the area.
VNew fencing at the Stikland Hospital
precinct which will hopefully prevent
squatting and dumping inside and around
the complexes.
These areas will be monitored by the rel-
evant departments and the feedback to the
council will determine what action will be
taken.
Vos also examined the areas surround-
ing the Chevron Refinery situated in Plat-
tekloof Road as the refinery and residents
inBothasig andEdgemeadwitnessedabus-
tle of activities due to its annual simulated
accident.
The exercise involved a large contingent
of emergency services, law enforcement
agencies, and Disaster Risk Management
personnel.
The exercise tested the preparedness and
ability of the authorities to co-ordinate the
off-site emergency management planning
arrangements when responding to an inci-
dent at a major hazard installation.
This forms part of the annual wide-
ranging exercises by the Citys Disaster
Risk Management Centre to strengthen
emergency and disaster response, Vos
said.

Noulen vertel: My hart het gebreek, ek
roep: Ekskuus, Oom! Oom!
Hyt geskok na my gekyk, nie besef ek
praatmethomnie, seker omdat iemand jare
dentlike, intelligente, onskuldige mens s
pies gekry, n brood, n french polony, bot-
ter, plastiek bottermesse, n hoender-mayo-
sub, n pakkie tabak en vuurhoutjies, en n
Coke. Dit klink pateties, maar dit het my
R120 gekos. Hoe op dees aarde moes hy dit
ooit kon bekostig?
Hy het belowe hy gaan my bel (n ek my
selfoonnommer met hom gedeel het), en
eendag, dan gaan hy my Namakwaland toe
Die terugvoering was oorweldigend. Baie
hoe moet hy weeklikse kospakkies ontvang

Recent heavy rainsmakes for full dams, but
saving water is still important.
This is the advice from subcouncil chair-
man Clive Justus, who advised that water
should be used sparingly to ensure that wa-
ter restrictions do not occur in summer.
At a recent subcouncil meeting, held on
Thursday 19 September, he announced that
the wet and cold weather is affecting many
but that water must be used sparingly as
winter is coming to an end.
This in return means less rain for Cape
Town.
The water department, despite the dams
currently recording in excess of 100 % ca-
pacity, placed an exhibition in the Parow
municipal office, with informative pam-
phlets explaining the importance of saving
water at all times.
Themembers of the public, attending the
subcouncil four-monthly meeting, quickly
identified water leaks on their property or
in public spaces and notifications have
been forwarded to the maintenance depart-
ment for repairs.
With the threat of climate change likely
to increase water scarcity even further, it
is very important for us to understand our
role in protecting natural water systems,
and to conserve our precious water sup-
plies.
Water is vital for life, and the averageper-
son cant live beyond five days without it.
The city supplies water to more than
900 000 households and businesses. These
include more than 600 000 formal users
consumers with a metered connection and
around 150 000 backyarders and 120 000 in-
formal dwellings that receive water
through other connections.
To supply this drinking water, the city
has a system of 12 dams, 13 water treatment
works, 138 reservoirs, 108 pump stations
and a pipeline network that is 10 400km
long.
What goes in must come out, and remov-
ing and treatingwastewater takes 23waste-
water treatment works and marine out-
falls, 377 pump stations and more than
9 000 km of sewers.
Making this all work takes the dedicated
efforts of more than 3 300 city employees,
and a budget of more than R3,6 billion a
year which is about R3 200 per household
per year.
Yet, most people hardly give water a
thought. They turn on the tap and take
clean water for granted, Justus said.
V Any water leaks can be reported directly by SMS
to 31373.
Vital to savewater
for summer season
Beauretha Seagren with ward 26 councillor Richard O'Connel, Donavin Williams and Kelsey
Williams attended the Saving Water meeting in Parow.

Mywyn lekkerder as kelders sn
TINA BURGER
@kaapse_kind
wat deesdae by bekende wynkelders se wy-
nie wyn s wil maak nie, s De Kock.
Hy beweer dat hy telkemale gesien het
hoe sakke preserveer- en kleurmiddels by
die wynmaakproses bygevoeg word, en dat
die oorspronklike manier van wynmaak
verlore gegaan het.
De Kock s nadat hy vir meer as ses jaar
lanknavorsing gedoenhet oor outydsewyn-
vraag groot is. n Massa liters wyn moet in
ouderingsproses gaan verlore, s hy.
Vandie kelderswaarDriesmeer oorwyn-
maak geleer het, produseermeer as sesmil-
gebruik, s hy.
En die wynmaakproses is maklik en be-
kostigbaar, volgens Dries.
dele, s hy.
Verder eksperimenteer hy met bestand-
dele soos mielies, naeltjies, pietersielie,
hops, wortels, rooibeet, akkerboomblare,
roosblaar, pampoen, piesangs en rosyntjie
en rys.
Ek geniet dit om te eksperimenteer. Die
wynmaakproses hoef nie so gesofistikeerd
ware staaltjies bygelas. Hierdie is waarlik
geniet, s hy.

Harte aangeraakmet inspirerende video
TINA BURGER
@kaapse_kind
Tydens subraad vier se raadsvergadering
moes sommige lede n traan wegpink.
Op Donderdag 19 September het Clive
Justus, subraadvoorsitter, harte aangeraak
Tygerberg-dienssentrum en Meals on
Wheels in Parowaan 392 seniors en 1 330 be-
nadeelde gemeenskapslede maak.
sien, behoort elke senior lid bedank teword.
Koekie Lochner
(72) van Parow is een
van die hardwerken-
de individue by die
sentrum wat hand in
eie boesem steek en
daagliks fondsinsa-
melingsprojekte ten
bate van die sentrum
aanpak.
Ek het self in n
woonstel gebly waar
daar nie lopende wa-
ter of ablusiegeriewe
was nie, en ek weet
hoe dit voel om
swaar te kry. Ek was
my soos poeding, s
sy.
Volgens Jan Frede-
rick van der Berg, of
Plankies soos baie
hom ken, was sy reis
in die lewe swaar en
lank. Hy moet daag-
liks n prostetiese
been dra. Maar met
die hulp van die sen-
trumhethyweer n fa-
milie gerf en nuwe
vriende gemaak.
En vir meeste van
hierdie senior bur-
gers is ondersteuning
belangrik aangesien
afsondering s n per-
soon emosioneel kan
knak.
s Justus. Justus is ook met die Norman
Bernstein-toekenning vereer as Merriman

is. Ons dra geen kennis van hierdie projek
nie. Wat het geword van Goodwood-inwo-
ners se mening oor die prioriteite in die
wyk? vra Theron.
toestand is nie?
hou? Intussen moet ons koes vir slaggate.
Janse van Rensburg redeneer dat die
plant van bome en die instandhouding van
parke noodsaaklik is. En die Stad probeer
om die voorbeeld te stel.
Clive Justus het onder andere opDonder-
dag 5 September tien bome geplant gedu-
rende boomplantmaand.
Justus en Janse Van Rensburg het ook
die skoliere van Laerskool Goodwoodpark
toegespreek oor gevaarlike koolstofdiok-
spanningsdoeleindes. Die openbare oop
ruimte is aangrensendaanLaerskoolGood-
Polywood- of Primwood-sit-
plekke sowel as vullisdrommeword glo ook
voorgestel vir hierdie park. Dit gaan hand
aan hand met n eko-vriendelike park aan-
gesien Polywood n materiaal is wat ge-
maak is uit herwinde hout en plastiek. In-
heemse bome, struike en grondbedekking-
plante sal aangeplant word, s sy. Theron
vra of hierdie projek belangriker is as die
paaie waarop duisende mense daagliks ry
meenskap ongelukkig is, sal by toekomsti-
ge vergaderings bespreek word.

On 12 September I was driving
down Rothschild Boulevard at
17:10 to Northlink College.
Another road user and I
stopped at the three-way
intersection at Elvy Street and
Rothschild Boulevard at the
entrance of the Nationlink
Plattekloof Retirement Village
and waited for an elderly
person to cross the road. As
the uncle was busy crossing
the double lane, I heard a
motorcycle approaching from
behind at a high speed and the
cyclist made absolutely no
effort to stop at the stop sign.
He passed through the two
stationary vehicles then passed
us and proceeded through the
intersection at a very high
speed, almost hitting the poor
pedestrian.
I could not believe what was
happening as I honked my
hooter to warn the poor elderly
person of the approaching
motorcycle when I realised
that he was not going to stop.
I followed the bike to where
he stopped at the daycare
centre/Panorama Primary
School in Malmesbury Street,
and took a photograph of his
motorcycle.
It is unacceptable that a
young person could behave like
this and that someone could
act so irresponsibly with no
respect for the law and life of
another person or even for his
own. I asked myself whether
this is due to plain stupidity, a
lack of proper parenting or just
an irresponsible teenager
having no respect for the law.
The question remains how
many times has he done this
and how many times has he
gotten away with it?
I remember a few months
ago TygerBurger had letters
about residents from the same
area complaining about traffic
officers clamping down on
residents for not stopping at
the stop signs and whether
they dont have any other more
serious matters to attend to.
No excuse for
reckless driving
In the TygerBurger of 21
August there was an article
about rubble being dumped all
over the city (Swaar boetes
wag op di morsjorse). Read-
ers were asked to report any
incident and it implies that
action will be taken.
So, I then phoned 021 596 1999
and a lady answered the phone.
I explained the problem, gave
the address and when I was
finished, I got the following
reply: Now what do you want
us to do?
No wonder citizens are
reluctant to report anything
with such a stupid reply.
Is this the competence level
of staff employed by the
council?

for most of us, we cant escape

Sad but true, but where do
we bridge our differences in
order to find common ground

other? Mutual respect. Yes,
mutual respect is clearly a
choice to be made.
Ive been renting for 11 years

In response to Yendors praise
of our postal services (SMS,
TygerBurger, 18 September) I
have the exact opposite experi-
ence.
In the last year I have not
received several letters, posted
overseas and domestically. One
letter posted airmail in Germa-
ny in January this year, finally
made it to my letterbox six
months later. I guess I should
be thankful that I received it at
all! I regularly have to chase
municipal accounts and tele-
phone accounts, only to find
out that they were posted ages
ago. It once took a municipal
account almost three weeks
from Cape Town to Durbanville.
I often find wrongly ad-
dressed mail in my letterbox.
Certainly not world class
service I would say.

SLICE OF LIFE
Sheer power of
social media
needs restraint
The benefits of social media have been
placed firmly in the spotlight after Table
Views Lona Marais was allegedly
threatened by a 4x4 driver, spat on and
nearly shoved into oncoming traffic.
Her husband reported this horrendous
episode on an internet forum and soon
Facebook was swarming with comments.
Everybody who could, was suddenly
looking at the road for this silver 4x4.
The few overworked police officers
eyes multiplied exponentially so to speak,
and soon the public attention was too big
for anyone to ignore including the
driver of the 4x4.
He handed himself in at the Table View
police station just a few hours later. The
key to a safe neighbourhood seems to be
in the hands of the forumites. Dr Martin
Luther Kings quote: There is power in
unity and there is power in numbers is
particularly apt in this regard.
The crime statistics indicate that the
need for the public and the police to
unite has never been greater.
The only drawback of a burgeoning
social media is the dangers posed by
subjective, uninformed and accusatory
comments.
These comments often go unchecked
and can lead to vigilantism.
The suspicion that someone might have
been guilty of committing a crime could
easily turn into a certainty.
Until everyone embraces that old
saying innocent until proven guilty,
social media will have to be carefully
regulated.

of your neighbour and let peace
be your common goal. Some-
thing for thought if you dont
give respect dont expect to
receive respect.

Ruyterwachts Abigail An-
drews is one of 11 finalists
in the Shoprite Groups an-
nual TOPstars perform-
ance competition.
Abigail, a trainee man-
ager at Checkers Durban-
ville, competed against
ShopriteCheckers employ-
ees across South Africa as
well as Mozambique, Zam-
bia and Nigeria for a spot
in the finals.
This is the first singing
competition Abigail has
entered, and while shes keeping her song
for the finals a surprise, she says: Im not
bound to one genre, if I find that I have a
liking for a song and I can sing it then I give
it my best.
I dont have a favourite artist as I have
a liking of many different individuals in
how they sing a song, she adds.
Abigail is preparing for her performance
at the Grand Finale which will be held at
the Good Hope Centre on Saturday 5 Octo-
ber with 2010 Idols runner up, Lloyd Cele,
actress, singer and TV star, Thembi Seete,
and Pam Andrews of Rhythm City.
The Shoprite TOPstars competition has
been running for seven years and offers the
opportunity for ordinary shop floor work-
ers to shine. The aim of the competition is
to expose employees to goal setting and em-
powerment.
I heard all about the competition when
I startedwith Checkers, Abigail says, add-
ing: I got all excited and said there and
then I will enter the compe-
tition next year.
My passion for singing
gave me more ammunition
to take part, Abigail says.
I thought to myself I
can do this andtake this on
as a challenge and a won-
derful experience.And that
is exactly what this TOP-
stars road trip has been
thus far, she says.
It has and still is an awe-
some and very overwhelm-
ing experience due to all
the support I am getting
from everyone, Abigail
says of competing in the
competition.
As time is coming closer towards the
grand finale event the excitement is beco-
ming greater as the preparation is a jour-
ney on its own, Abigail says.
Finalists of the Shoprite TOPstars com-
petition are being flown to Cape Townwith
beachfront accommodation, exciting ex-
cursions during their first weekend in Ca-
pe Town, and then aweeks vocal coaching,
performance coaching, stage craft training,
and grooming for the event night.
V Formore information about the competition, visit
the Shoprite TOPstars Facebook page.
V Visit www.tygerburger.co.za to listen to a clip of
Abigail singing.
WIN! WIN! WIN!
V The first 25 readers to email their name and con
tact details to amagroovero@mweb.co.za with the
word TygerBurger in the subject line, can eachwin
double tickets to the BoogieWonderland themed
Grand Finale at theGoodHopeCentre on5October.

Expect some nostalgia when British pop
group, Smokie, performs at the GrandWest
Grand Arena on Saturday.
TygerBurger spoke to Terry Uttley, the
bassist and vocalist for the band who are
known for hits like Living Next Door to Al-
ice, Lay Back in the Arms of Someone,
Mexican Girl, For a Few Dollars, Nee-
dles and Pins and If You Think You Know
How to Love Me.
Living next door to Alice is arguably
one of the bands biggest hits here in South
Africa. The song, which was written by
Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman was origi-
nally released by anAustralian group called
New World in 1972.
Uttley talks about how Smokie decided to
record the song in a studio in Los Angeles,
USA.
Terry says: We were just talking about
our upbringing in Yorkshire and Mike
Chapman, our producer, was talking about
hisupbringing inAustralia andwewere just
having a lazy day.
Chapman was recounting how he started
songwriting and told them about a song he
had written for NewWorld. He sang it, and
when he got to the chorus we all took our
parts because it had been a minor radio hit
in England, he recalls.
It was so memorable, Uttley adds.
He explains that after hearing them sing
the chorus Chapman said: Thats it, weve
got to record this.
Wewent ah, no,we dont dowe and shes
become our flagship basically, out of a
chance conversation, Uttley says.
Smokies last album, Take a Minute, was
released in August 2010, but Uttley says fans
can expect something new in the not too dis-
tant future.
Were actually five songs into a new al-
bum, he says.
Today the band is made up of Martin Bull-
ard on keyboards, lead guitarist, Mick Mc-
Connell, Steve Pinnell on drums,Mike Craft
on leadvocals andrhythmguitarwithUttley
on bass. The quintet will be in Cape Town
at theGrandWestGrandArena onSaturday,
the first stop on their SA tour.
V Tickets for the show cost R175 to R575 and are

Two lovely dogs in the care of the
Fisantekraal Animal Welfare (FAW) are
now ready for their loving new homes.
Fun-loving Eddie, who is close to one
year old now and has been with the FAW
since he was a puppy, is still hoping for a
forever home.
Devon has also been in the care of the
FAW for some time. He is one year old and
loves to play. He is medium to large and
would suit an active household.

Depression is not about just feeling low,
and will not disappear by just pulling
yourself together. It is a medical condi-
tion, and aswith other biological illnesses,
it requires treatment and medication. For
various reasons, it is still an illness which
is not spoken about openly in society.
Thursday 10October is theWorldHealth
Organisations Mental Health Awareness
Day, and on the closest Sunday, 13 Octo-
ber, YOU, DRUM and Huisgenoot together
with M-Net will hike for hope.
As is the case with other illnesses, early
recognition of symptoms and the neces-
sary treatment can increase a depression
sufferers general quality of life.
Much more: it can save lives, as the ter-
minal, fatal consequence of this biological
disease, suicide, is an even bigger taboo.
You can either enter for the 5 kmwalka-
thon or the 10 kmwalkathon in the beauti-
ful vineyards of the DAria Wine Estate,
Durbanville.
The entry fee is R50 (5 km) and R75
(10 km) and R30 for children (both routes).
Entrants will get a T-shirt and ruck
sack. The entrance fee goes to the depres-
sion research fund of the Ithemba Founda-
tion.

Kuils River Hospitals secret heart weapon

K
uils River Hospital recently became
Africas first and only accredited ad-
vanced heart care facility.
This accolade was bestowed on the hospi-
tal by the international Adult Congenital
Heart Association (ACHA).
The hospitals secret heart weapon?When
Dr Lou Hofmeyr, an adult congenital and
structural heart disease cardiologist from
Milnerton, joined the hospitals state-of-the
art cardiac unit, the SA Endovascular Prac-
tice.
This afforded the Netcare Kuils River
Hospital (NKRH) the accreditation, said
Karen Eagle, the hospitals spokeswoman.

The distinction between any other hospi-
tals cardiac unit and the one now functional
in Kuils River, is the fact that they offer ad-
vanced cardiology.
And it was Hofmeyrs completion of an 18
month fellowship in 2012 thatmeant the hos-
pitalmet all the criteria to obtain the accred-
itation which made it the only one on the
continent with this honour.
NKRH is the only facility in Africa to of-
fer advanced cardiology recommended by
the ACHA, Hofmeyr said.
He explained that a number of require-
ments had to bemet to becomeAfricas lead-
er in ACHD. These included having an ex-
tended medical staff including surgeons, in-
tensive care specialists, imaging and
anaesthetic backup, as well as nursing staff,
high care and ICU facilities. Finally a struc-
tural heart and interventional cardiologist,
such as himself specialising in ACHD.
A multi-specialised group of practition-
ers allowing the practice to perform compre-
hensive medical and interventional cardio-
logical services, he said.
