2. Your sister loves chocolate. Would she rather have 1g or 1mg of chocolate?

3. Write 4.375x104 in standard form.

4. Write 0.0034 in scientific notation.

5. I want to test whether eating only McD’s 3x a day for 1 week will make me gain weight. What is the IV, DV and

control?

Class Checklist No students were talking during the review of the Do Now, during teaching time (note-

taking) and during closing.

Every student was on time

Ms. Chan did not ask any student to put away their electronics (cellphones/IPODS)

No curse words were used inside this room.

Every student remained in his/her seat until independent practice.

By the time Ms. Chan goes over this list, every table has 2 chairs behind it.

All students followed the class rules. (Students did not argue with Ms. Chan)

Every student brought THEIR OWN pencil and paper to class.

Every student completed ALL of the class work for the day.

No student had his/her head down during class.

EVERY student turned in the homework ON-TIME.

It took Ms. Chan no more than 10 seconds to get the entire class’s full attention (eyes forward, mouths shut).

Review Do Now1. What is one of the objectives of today’s class?2. Your sister loves chocolate. Would she rather have 1g

or 1mg of chocolate?A: 1 g. It’s larger.

3. Write 4.375x104 in standard form.A: = 4.375 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 = 43750

4. Write 0.0034 in scientific notation.A: 3.4 x 10-3

5. I want to test whether eating only McD’s 3x a day for 1 week will make me gain weight. What is the IV, DV and control?

A: IV: eating McD’s. DV: weight. Control: Before eating McD’s.

Announcement

• You have a TEST this FRIDAY.

• Remember to place your HW into the Assignment Box by the end of IP.

• Notes: Only what’s bolded and underlined.

Agenda

Review HW (as needed)

Direct Instruction: Graphing data (3 slides)

IP: Draw conclusions from 6 different graphs

Closing: Homework (11 questions)

Are there any questions on the HOMEWORK?

• DO NOT COPY WORK. JUST ASK ME FOR HELP!

Yesterday …

• We talked about ________________, which is how scientists express very big or very small numerical results more precisely & accurately.

• Today, we will talk about how scientists express their results from experiments in GRAPHS.

9/28 Notes: Graphing

• Why graph your results?– It is the EASIEST way to see whether there is

a relationship between 2 things (the IV and DV).

–Graphs allow us to draw conclusions about the things that we are testing.

There are MANY different types of graphs, each with their own purpose.

Line Graphs• Show 1 changing relationship.

• Begin with a DATA TABLE.

–X – AXIS = IV (what you’re testing)–Y – AXIS = DV (what you’re testing the IV on)

X value Y value

Example:

Bar Graph• Compares data for SEVERAL individual

items/events

• Also begins with a data table that is then used to graph.

Example: What can you conclude from this graph?

Example 2• Take 15s to look at the chart.• What is the IV?• DV?

• Which type of graph would you want to use to represent this data more easily?

• What is 1 conclusion you can make from this data?

Example graph from an article about

skeletal muscle fat oxidation in African

American and White women.

Independent Practice (10 pts)

• Do this on a SEPARATE piece of paper. You are to place it into the Assignment Box at the end of the period.

• If you finish early, you will begin the HW for tonight. The HW is 11 questions, worth 5 points. It is due tomorrow.

Independent Practice

At each of the 8 stations, there is some sort of data presented, either in a TABLE or a GRAPH.

On a SEPARATE piece of paper, you are to write the name of the station & at least 1 conclusion you can draw from this data.

You only need to draw conclusions from 6 of the stations for full credit.

Name: Date: Period:IP title: Graphing

Figure 4:

According to this line graph, the Energizer battery alkaline battery lasts the longest.

What goes into the Assignment Box today?

(1) The Scientific Notation HW from last night.

(2) The Independent Practice work from today.

Closing

• Your HOMEWORK tonight is the half sheet of paper.

• The HW is worth 5 points, there are 10 questions that you must answer.
