HAZARDOUS VS NANOMATERIAL

Decision of the Board of Appeal, June 2017:• finds that being a nanomaterial is insufficient on its

own to justify it as a potential concern;• mentions that no consistent causal links have been

established between size and hazardousproperties, yet!

• notes that the definition of nanomaterials establishes a size threshold for substances to be defined as nanomaterials.

”Being a nanomaterial is insufficient on its own to

justify a potential concern”

MORPHOLOGY & FLEXIBILITY OF TUBALL™ (SWCNT) 1/2

A long rigid biopersistent who* fiber has to be considered carcinogenic

WHO dimension, length>5 µm, diameter < 3 µm, a L:D ratio larger than 3:1

Bio-persistence: the ability of a substance to remain in the lung →bio-persistent

MORPHOLOGY & FLEXIBILITY OF TUBALL™ (SWCNT) 1/2

• Currently not classifiable as carcinogenicity to humans

• TUBALL™ does not behave like asbestosfibers …. due to non-rigidity

• No indications for any carcinogenicrisks associated to our material today

TUBALL™ ARE NOT RIGID FIBERSRigid acts like asbestos high

carcinogenic potency

Mainly about the inadequate evidencein experimental animals for thecarcinogenicity of SWCNTs

HS&E ASPECTS OF TUBALL™ (SWCNT)

19 NM‘s were screened on cytotoxicityDate of publication: August 2017

Main conclusions:• SWCNT is non-cytotoxic!• All CNTs do not induce potent inflammatory

responses!• SWCNT shows a lower toxicity in certain in-

vitro experiments (Cytotoxicity in THP cells)

Case studies:exposure monitoring on different handling and processes

1. R&D - handling of Tuball executed2. R&D - handling of Tuball & Tuball containing products executed

MEASUREMENT OF EXPOSURE TO INHALEDNANOPARTICLES IN THE WORKPLACE

Conclusion: CNT release was observed during the field test sampling, however CNT amounts collected were well below the NIOSH REL of 1 μg/m3 8h TWA (< 5% NIOSH REL).

3. Handling and processing of Tuball containing products Still ongoing

Conclusion: NO CNT release was observed during this type of field test sampling!
