Eye-catching artwork by DW 7th gradeD-West seventh grade art students recently created some eye-catching artwork. Art teacher Holly Savaged ex-

plained that a variety of art techniques were used by the students. They first used art expression by dropping, splatter-ing and swirling acrylic paint onto large white paper while listening to music. Next, a collage process was used toapply strips of magazine or calendar pages to the background. Choosing which animal—a bird, dog, or cat—theywanted to create was the next step. Mrs. Savage provided stencils for the eyes, beaks or noses. Bringing the artworkanimal to life was done with oil pastels, and students were instructed to use harmonious colors on the color wheel.The finishing touches of whiskers, eyebrows, and eyelashes were done with acrylics. Riverside Attend HOSA ConferenceBy Jim Cera

Riverside High School’s health science pathway students attended theirfirst HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America) conference held at PittState. HOSA is the national organization for future medical health profes-sionals and hosts 2 annual conferences where students from all across thestate come together for what is usually a 2 day event (shortened this time dueto weather) that combines hearing from guest speakers, networking with busi-nesses and learning about career opportunities as well as speaking with col-lege recruiters and the opportunity to compete in their choice of over 40different medical and health related events. The Riverside HOSA charter has16 members, 14 of which participated in the event through online testing andat conference competitions in events ranging from medical terminology tonurse assisting and forensics.

This first event for us was a great learning experience in many ways andwe are already looking forward to the fall conference.

Lady Mustangs advanceto sub-state

The Lady Mustangs basketball team has advanced to the sub-state level inpost-season play. They will play at Clay Center High School at 6 p.m. on Thurs-day, Feb. 28 against Hanover. Last week in the regional tournament, D-Westdefeated both Onaga and Troy to earn a place in the championship game againstCentralia. Despite losing to the Panthers 48-63, the top two teams advancefrom regionals. For the 1A schools in Kansas, playing in the basketball sub-state tournament is no longer automatic. The first step for post-season playhas gone back to the regional tournament system, which was used prior to2011. In 2011 1A basketball was divided into two divisions, and regional tour-naments were no longer part of post-season play. Starting this year, the twodivisions were combined into one division of 117 schools for 2018-19.
