This eBook contains a pattern for mittens designed to looklike a tropical fish. Since these mittens are puppet-like, thethumb spots are in the fish's fin. This doesn't prevent themittens from doing their main job - to keep little hands
warm, but it might prevent dexterity. However, what mittendoesn't!
Notions:
1/3 yard pieces of fleece in your main color choice
Scraps of fleece for your coordinating fins and nose
elastic
Thread
Googly eyes, doll eyes, or buttons for eyes
Hot glue gun (for attaching eyes)

1. Use chalk or fabric marker to transfer the elasticplacement line onto the wrong side of the mitten. Allyou will really need is the beginning and end of the
line.
2. Attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic.
Place the other end over one of your markings andanchor it to the mitten piece by stitching back andforth a bit.
3. Then stretch the elastic and sew, holding the safetypin.
4. When you come to the pin, unattach it and stitchback and forth again to secure the elastic.

1. For these mittens you will need the following pattern pieces labeled with a number 1 andletters a-f:
1a fish body (cut one)1b fish nose (cut one)1c thumb fin (cut two)1d palm (cut one)1e lower fin (cut one)
Cut your fleece into the number of pieces specified.
I used a print for the fish body and lower fin, and fuzzy white fleece for the fish nose, thumbfin, and palm. Note the direction of grain suggested on the pattern pieces for best results. Youmay change the direction to accommodate a printed material for all pieces except 1b fishnose. This piece must be cut as specified so that you will be able to stretch it slightly as youease it to fit 1a.
2. Pin the nose (1b) to the
body (1a) right sidestogether, matching thenotch first and thenstretching the sides of thenose a bit to fit the body.
Stitch.
Clip the curved seams, as shown.

3. Pin one thumb fin piece (1c) to the body, rightsides together, matching the double notches.
Pin the center first and then bend the sidesaround to fit.
Stitch together, sewing only along the bottomthumb edge.
4. Repeat, pinning and stitching the secondthumb piece to the palm (1d) in the sameway.
If you know that you are going to use
button eyes for your mitten, this wouldbe a great time to sew them on.
As for me, I never know which eyes I will
use until the end, so I sometimes end up
with some tricky button sewing.

5. Cut two pieces of elastic using the Elastic Size Chart on page 3. Stitch one piece of elastic tothe wrong side of each mitten half along the elastic placement line, stretching it as you sew(see elastic instructions on p.2).
6. Pin the two mitten pieces right
sides together, matching up thethumb pieces and elastic lines.
Sandwich the lower fin piece (1e) in themitten at the bottom, matching the triplenotches and curves. (Pin the center first, and bend the sides around like you hadto do for the thumb fin).
Stitch all the way around the mitten, pivoting when you come to the thumb soyou stitch around the thumb pieces too.
Clip curves.
Turn right side out.
