A. The Troctor is shipped in one corton w it h the rear w heel and tire a ssembly, Port No. 5432 , in a separate carton.
B. O pen tra ctor unit fi rst . Remove all par ts from carton, and place in a convenient arrangement on a clean, level surface.

The tra nsm ission is powered on need le bea ri ngs and ball bearing s. The reduct ion is 108 to 1, and both final drives are steel forgings . All shofts a re lurned, ground, ha rdened , and polished for greater streng th and bes t oil sealing.
Speeds are from 1 mph to 6 mph wi th 3 speeds fo rward and 1 reverse .

BefORE YOU START
There is NO Oil in the crankcase o f the e ngi ne w hen shipped from the factory . Oil is recom mended by Ihe engine ma nufa ctu rer and must be fo llowed fo r best pe rformance and long life. See Engine Manua l.
lubrico te 011 grease fittings \/Vith a regular pressure gun lubricant every eight to ten hours of operation . Refer to Fig ure 1 for the location of grease fillings.
A lig ht machine oil should be used on all movi ng parts to keep joints from \/Vea ri ng and sq uea king.
Remove oil filler plug , located a t the lef t rear side of the transmiss ion, a nd fi ll to level of ho le \/Vith a good grade of S.A.E. 40 oil (will require about 3 p in ts).
The transmi ssion should be checked after eve ry 40 hours of use. The tra nsmission should be drained once a year by removing plug on boltom to d rain oi L Refill as above paragraph . This is a regular automotive type transmission with s liding gears and should ho ve the !'>ame care as your car.
BATTERY The battery in stalle d in the 856 tractor is a dry
charged battery . It is important tha I you proper ly p repare th is battery to insure good service and long li fe.
1. Remove ven t cops. Remove or destroy any sea l· ing device which may have bee n used to dose or restrict the vent openings.
2 . Fill each cell of the battery to the proper level wi th the battery electrolyte.
NOTE : Tem pe ra ture o f battery a nd elect ro lyte at time of fill ing sho u ld be abo ve 60 '" F. Neve r fill battery in the vehicle.
3. BOOST CHA RGE , 15 a mps. for 10 minutes or 7 amps. for 30 minu tes. Adjust e lectrolyte level, if ner ~ essary, after charge.
4 . Install batte ry w ith batte ry posts toward t he rea r of t racto r. Start engine. After battery has been in service, odd only approved wa ter.
DO NOT ADD ACID .
TI RES
The front ti res are 16 )( 5.50-8 and shou ld be infla te d to 12 pounds of air p ressu re . The rear t ires a re 8 x 12 and s hould have 8 pound s of a ir p ressure . The tires con also be filled \/Vi th ballast if desired . Ordinarily this is nol necessary as the we ight of the operator will odd sufficien t \/Veight for adequate traction.
STARTI NG EN GINE
1. Be fore starting the engin e fill gas tonk (loca ted under the hood ) with a good grade of regular gas, and open va lve on sed iment bowl. See Figure 1.
2 . Place gear shift lever in neutra l position . 3 . Pu ll throttl e lever }'2 way ou t a nd turn to the
rig ht fa lock it in p osi t ion. Note : The thro ttle con trol has a locking device. Turn th e throttle con tro l to 'he left to unlock. adiust to the desired position and turn to the right to lock.
4 . Pull choke lever all the \/Vay ou t to choke en gine. If eng ine is worm and has been running, choking may not be necessary.
5 . The Model 856 tracto r has a key starter-s\/Vilch . Tur n key 011 the way 10 right to start engine,
6 . When engine s torts p ush choke in to off posi t ion and regulate th rottle control b y turning to the left to un lock and push in or ou t 10 desired speed.
7 . De press d u tch pe dal on left side of Iractor before select ing desired gear range .
S . When sta rt ing tractor in winter it is desirable 10 d epress clutch so engine does not ha ve to t urn transmission.
CLUTCHI NG
Don' t force the gear shjf, lever if the gears do not immed iately mesh. Depress clu tch peda l all the way do\/Vn and le t up, then depress again and s h ift . To ovoid su dden s tarts, release clutch peda l slowly. While in motion d o not sh ift gears \/Vithoul depressing clutch pedal.
The clutch pedal also operotes the brokes WHEN DEPRESSED ALL THE WAY DOWN. For this reason, you should depress the clutch peda l ONLY Yo O F THE WAY DOWN WHEN SH IFTING \/Vh ile in motion . Thi s 'dutch broke pedal combina tion makes clutching automatic as you apply the brakes to stop .
PA RKING BRAKE
The parking broke is located on the left side of the Iractor as show n in Fi gure 1. To set th e park ing broke depress the clutch-broke ped al as for as possible and p ush the parking brake down . To re lease the broke depress the clutch -broke pedal.

All drown implements attach in seconds. Simply lift the tractor hitch pin, insert the tongue, and replace pin. .
All power implements will use the attachment clutch ped al located o n the r ight s ide of the troctor .
CARE OF TRACTOR 1. Keep tractor greased and oiled regularly . Re·
fer to Figura 1 for the location of grease fittings. Check transmission and engine case oil levels.
2 . Keep engine air deaner dean. This will odd to engine life.
3. Keep tires properly inflated. See previous instructions.
4. Keep trador covered and in a dry place when not in use.
5. Keep gross and dirt out of engine eow ling as these will stop the flow of air and decrease engine li fe .
6. BRAKE ADJUSTMENT. The broke bond, 10' coted on the left side of the transmission, brakes the transm ission a nd in turn sto ps the whee ls .
To adjust, depress dutch broke p edal and move parking brake lever forward into the e ngag ed pos i. tion . Tighten nut on broke rod unt il both rea r w hee ls skid when tractor is p ushed - parking broke en gage d . Tighten nut another Yi turn. The broke and parking bra ke ore now p ro perly adjuste d.
7. CLUTCH ·BRAKE PEDAL AOJUSTMEi'tT. The dutch-brake pedal rod may be turned in or out to adjust the pedol to o pe rator 's de sired position. Remove pin from rod and turn ro d in or out for adjus tment. There a re olso tw o hole s in the pedal to ad just for travel. The uppe r hole is for a short movemen t of tro ve l, the lowe r hole is fo r a long m o vement.
8 . Whe n re pla cing be lts or moun ting dri ve implements make sure al l pulleys a re in line .
9. BATTERY. Check liquid after every 40 hours of vse. If troctor has bee n in stora ge it may b e ne ce ssary to re charge.
10. Your trocto r is o nly a s good as the service yo u gi ve it. Sse your Whee l Horse Dea ler for a thorovgh check- up after each season of u se.

14. Wotch out for traffic when near roadways. 15. Handle gosoline with core it is highly
flammable. a. Use approved gasoline container. b. Never add gasoline to a running motor - fill
tank out of doors w ipe up spilled gaso line . c. Replace gasoline cop securely. d. Open doors if motor is run in garage -
exhaust gases ore dange rous. 17. Keep machine in good operating condition and
kee p safety devices in p lace. Use guards as ins tructe d in owner's manual.
