History of Caneças

History of CaneçasThe name of the town of Caneças has its origin in a legend. One day the King D.Dinis, who was passing

through, had great thirst and asked a woman to bring him water. The woman did so, and brought

him a mug full of fresh water, which the king enjoyed very much. To show his gratitude the

monarch named this town Caneças.Caneças has always been a quiet place close to

Lisbon so that the people of Lisbon came here to breathe clean air.

Until the 19th century, Lisbon had great difficulties in their water supplies, and Caneças used its sources: Fontainhas, Castanheiros, Piçarras,

Passarinhos, Castelo de Vide, Fonte Velha, Fonte Santa and Fonte do Ouro.
