DESCRIPTION
Let the capital of the Amazonas department captivate you. Chachapoyas, a peaceful and friendly city, is the starting point for discovering the natural and cultural wealth which this land abundantly possesses. Amazonas is famous for its cloud forests, intensely humid zones which favor an exuberant flora and a singular fauna, besides its impressive lagoons and waterfalls. This was, as well, the land of the Chachapoya, the warrior people who left impressive fortifications such as Kuélap, as well as vestiges of monuments dedicated to their dead, such as the Karajía sarcophagi. Amazonas also houses indigenous ethnic groups who proudly preserve their ancestral traditions. Its gastronomy is another attraction you cannot miss.

FROM CHACHAPOYAS
LEYMEBAMBA MUSEUM. It exhibits 219 mummies and objects found in the Lagoon of the Condors, as well as
KUÉLAP. It is a stone citadel built by the Chachapoya culture around 800 A.D. It is located at 3,000 masl (9842,52 fasl) and covers about 6 hectares (14,83 acres). Inside the fortress there are 420 circular buildings decorated with rhombus- and zigzag-shaped friezes.
GOCTA WATERFALL. With 771 meters (2332,68 ft) high, it is considered the world’s third tallest waterfall. It is the natural habitat of toucans, monkeys, hummingbrids, and the Andean cock-of-the-rock.
QUIOCTA CAVERNS. These are natural capricious formations that house pre-Inca burials.
KARAJÍA SARCOPHAGI. These one-thousand-year-old pre-Inca tombs were placed on top of a cliff. They are 2 meters (6,56 ft) high, molded in clay and decorated with geometrical motifs.
LEVANTO. This zone keeps pre-Hispanic vestiges such as the Ashpachaca channel, the Qhapaq Ñan (Inca Trail), and the archaeological sites of Yalape and Collacruz. The town, which dates back to the Spanish Colonial times, lodges the second church built in the East of Peru.
