The Middle Ages

Vocabulary

Middle Ages Time period from 500 to 1500 that was

marked by the creation of many small kingdoms in Europe after the fall of Rome. Also know as the medieval period.

Interaction: Draw a timeline showing the ancient world, middle ages and modern times.

Monks and Missionaries

Monks were religious men who lived apart from the society in religious communities called monasteries. Missionaries traveled throughout Europe converting people to Christianity. Both helped spread Christianity in Europe.

Interactions: Draw a picture of a monk in a church and a picture of a traveling missionary.

Feudalism

System of obligations that governed the relationship between lords and vassals in Medieval Europe.

Interaction: Draw a someone bowing to a king. Label vassal and lord.

Charlemagne King of the Franks, he was a

brilliant warrior and strong leader. He was crowned emperor of the Romans in 800 after conquering much of the former Roman empire.

Interaction: Use page 237 to write a 5 W poem about Charlemagne

William the Conqueror Powerful French noble who

conquered England, he brought feudalism to Britain.

To reward his knights for their victory he gave them large estates of land in his new country (fiefs). o Defeated the English King

at the Battle of Hastings.

Lord/Noble

Nobles who owned land and provided protection for those who lived there.

Gave knights land called fiefs in return for military service and loyalty

The most powerful nobles were king and queens

Knight Warriors who fought on horse back for a noble or

lord.

Were paid by the lord with land.

Vassal A knight who promised to

support a lord in return for land.

Manor The large estate owned

by a knight or a lord. o Included a house or castle, pastures, fields and forests.

oHad a village where the peasants who worked on the manor lived.

Serfs

o Workers who were tied to the land on which they lived. • Not slaves but were not allowed to leave without the lord’s permission. •Worked the lords land and in return were given a small piece of land to work for themselves.
