Requirements• Step one: Earn a high school diploma: One of the basic EMT requirements is

obtaining a high school diploma or GED equivalent. This is the basis to enter an EMT training program. Classes should focus on include chemistry, biology and health.

• Step two: Enter formal EMT training: EMT training is offered on different levels, including EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate, and EMT Paramedic. EMT-Paramedic is the most advanced level and requires training on anatomy and physiology and more advanced medical skills. This type of training can be done through a community or

vocational college. Step three: Earn an associate's degree: While an associate's degree is not necessarily one of the EMT requirements, it can be beneficial. Often, classes taken for formal EMT training can be applied towards an associate's degree in EMT or Paramedic. An associate's degree is also good preparation for the NREMT examination.

Requirements Cont’d• Step four: Obtain field experience: Field experience may be offered through formal

EMT training or as part of earning an associate's degree. EMTs in training usually worked under the supervision of experienced EMTs or paramedics and may assist in routine procedures such as monitoring vital signs.

Step five: Become certified: All 50 states require EMTs to be licensed. Becoming certified requires passing the NREMT examination which is slightly different depending on the level of licensure the applicant wishes to receive. The EMT-Paramedic designation is the most difficult.
