Adult Formation and Discipleship
As we enter the month of November this week, when we traditionally remember the faithful departed, we will be looking into the Catholic view of death and our practices surrounding it. Catholics believe that “Death puts an end to human life as the time open to either accepting or rejecting the divine grace manifested in Christ. The New Tes-tament speaks of judgment primarily in its aspect of the final encounter with Christ in his second coming, but also repeatedly affirms that each will be rewarded immediately after death in accordance with his works and faith.” (CCC 1021). This last part is what we call the particular judgment (as opposed to the Last Judg-ment at the end of time). Oftentimes today, people skip over the judgment part. We sometimes talk as though our loved ones were im-mediately in heaven (we have a process for determin-ing that– it is called canonization!). We don’t like to think of judgment– because that means we might have to change! Many of the great saints can seem to us to have had a morbid preoccupation with death. But when you real-ly look at their lives, you see this is not the case at all– their lives were filled with the joy of Christ, and with the peace and hope that come from believing in His promises of eternal life. But what they also had was the sober realization that they were going to die and that they were going to be asked to give an account of their actions, an account of what they did with the grace they had received from God. As Christians we need to remember where our lives are heading. Not in the sense that we should be para-lyzed with fear over what God’s judgment has in store for us– if we seek to cooperate with His grace, He will give us all we need– but rather in the sense of taking responsibility and being a prudent and wise steward, who knows what is coming and prepares accordingly.
Youth Ministry Updates
Quote of the Week
Learning and Practicing the Faith
We can enter heaven only thanks to the blood of the Lamb, thanks to the blood of Christ. Christ’s own blood has justified us, which has opened for us the gates of heaven. And if today we remember our broth-ers and sisters who have gone before us in life and are in Heaven, it is because they have been washed in the blood of Christ. This is our hope: the hope of Christ's blood! It is a hope that does not disappoint. If we walk with the Lord in life, he will never disappoint us! In the Second Reading, we heard what the Apostle John said to his disciples: “See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason the world does not know us.... We are God's children now; it does not yet appear what we shall be, but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is” (1 Jn 3:1-2). To see God, to be like God: this is our hope. And today, on All Saints’ Day and the first day that we commemorate the faithful departed, we need to think a little about this hope: this hope that accompanies us in life. The first Christians depicted hope with an anchor, as though life were an anchor cast on Heaven’s shores and all of us journeying to that shore, clinging to the anchor’s rope. This is a beautiful image of hope: to have our hearts anchored there, where our beloved pre-decessors are, where the Saints are, where Jesus is, where God is. This is the hope that does not disap-point” -Pope Francis, Homily for All Saints, 2013
