Hire company in New York operation ‘Clean-up Sandy’Sykes Pumps the UK-based

specialist pump hire company has,

via its North American distributor

Ameripumps, provided 42 pumps,

as well as additional ancillary

equipment, to aid the clear up

operation following storm Sandy

in New York, USA.

The pumps were required for

dewatering the fl ooded subway in

Midtown: it was reported that

close to 30 million gallons of

water gushed into the crucial

commuter tunnels.

The self-priming pump models

supplied by Sykes Pumps are the

GP100 and GP200 and were speci-

fi ed due to the requirement for 50

HP or less. To ensure that the

pumps are properly maintained

and function to maximum

capacity, the company has also

supplied technicians at no charge

to assist in the setup and training.

Nigel Gill, Operations Support

Director, Andrews Sykes, said:

“Sykes Pumps has assisted with

other disaster clean-up operations

in the past – particularly fl oods

along the Mississippi river and

West Virginia – so we are familiar

with the protocol in these slightly

unusual and challenging situations.

While the urgency and severity of

emergencies such as these cannot

be overstated, the camaraderie

amongst the pump industry and

the specialists working on site

should be commended.”

Thermoplastic construction for corrosion-free handlingThe Vanton Pump and equipment

company of New Jersey USA is

promoting its SGV Vortex pump

head for its Vanton SUMP-GARD®

vertical thermoplastic pumps.

These pumps handle fl uids and

slurries containing stringy materials

or solids to 51 mm in diameter.

They are of solid thermoplastic

construction of all wetted compo-

nents allows corrosion-free, abra-

sion- resistant handling of acids,

caustics and a wide range of

solids-laden wastes at tempera-

tures to 135°C.

Further, the SGV Vortex pump head

features a recessed, dynamically

balanced, clog-free impeller,

allowing solids to pass through

the pump without blockage, and

is off ered on Vanton SG Series

sump pumps for depths to 6.1 m,

and SGK cantilevered bearingless

run-dry pumps for depths to 1.2 m.

All fl uid-contact components of

the pump are available in abra-

sion-resistant polypropylene (PP),

polyvinyl chloride (PVC), chlorin-

ated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) or

polyvinylidene fl uoride (PVDF),

which are chemically inert to the

corrosive fl uids they are specifi ed

to handle, unlike metallic

components.

The heavy-duty stainless steel shaft

is fully isolated from the fl uid by a

thick-sectioned thermoplastic

sleeve, eliminating metal contact

with the pumped fl uid.

Smart approach to design turbomachinery packagesAdvanced Design Technology

(ADT), a software developer of

turbomachinery design methods,

announced that its TURBOdesign

Suite version 5.2 is now shipping.

This version of the three-dimen-

sional (3D) inverse design tech-

nology software provides a new

volute module and faster design

and optimization capabilities for

wider operating ranges and

customized solutions.

Design engineers and original

equipment manufacturers benefi t

from the 3D inverse design tech-

nology in ADT’s suite.

The Suite is an aerodynamic and

hydrodynamic 3D design software

package that allows users to

design, analyze and optimize all

types of turbomachinery, such as

axial, mixed-fl ow, or centrifugal

pumps, compressors, fans, turbines

and torque converters. Using the

software, designers evaluate

turbomachinery package size and

performance predictions, perform

detailed 3D blade design with 3D

inverse design capabilities, analyze

fl ow information per component,

stage performances with turboma-

chinery specifi c 3D computational

fl uid dynamics (CFD), and auto-

mate exploration of the design

space with automatic optimization

capabilities.

“TURBOdesign software specifi es

fl ow related design parameters,

which eliminate trial and error and

helps engineers view a larger design

space. Even new engineers are

productive within days. With the 5.2

release we bring these functionalities

to the design of volutes and casings

for the fi rst time,” said Professor

Mehrdad Zangeneh, founder and

managing director of ADT.
