Endeavored

v.  To attempt. She endeavored to keep her balance on the rocking deck of the ship.

Entangled

adj.  Twisted together. The kitten's paws became entangled in the yarn.

Ratlines

n.  One of the small ropes, fastened horizontally to ropes supporting a ship's mast, which together form a ladder. A large seabird perched on one of the ratlines of the ship.

Rigging

n.  The system of ropes, chains, and other gear used to control a ship's sails. A good sailor had to be able to climb the rigging like a rat.

Seasoned

adj.  Experienced. After four months at sea, Mario felt like a seasoned sailor.  

Treacherous

adj.  Marked by unpredictable dangers. A narrow ledge provided a treacherous path up the mountainside.
