Sheriff’s Corner Sheriff Dale R. Gribler is pleased to announce that the Van Buren County Sheriff 's
Office K9's will be receiving 3 bullet and stab protective vests thanks to the efforts of
Vested Interest in K9s, Inc, a Massachusetts based non profit organization.
Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. is a 501c (3) all volunteer charity located in East Taunton,
MA. whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests for law enforcement
dogs throughout the United States. Each vest costs $950.00 and has a 5 year warranty.
The nonprofit was established in 2009 to assist law enforcement agencies with this po-
tentially life saving body armor for their four legged K9 Officers. Through private and
corporate sponsorships Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. provided over 400 law enforcement
dogs with protective vests since their inception in August of 2009.
Two recent events made it possible for the charity to provide 217 vests for our four
legged crime fighters across the country. January 2013, a regional Groupon Grassroots
campaign naming Vested Interest in K9s as a charity partner raised over $55,000 which
allowed the donation of 53 K9 vests and a nationwide Groupon campaign in March
2013 raised over $155,000 providing vests for 163 K9s in 30 states.
The organization offers Armor Express body armor manufactured in Michigan and
orders them exclusively from distributor Regency Police Supply in Hyannis, MA. who
also does the custom embroidery on the body armor.
New K9 graduates as well as K9's with expired vests are eligible to be added to the
organization's waiting list.
President, Sandy Marcal began working with law enforcement agencies in 2000 to
coordinate efforts between various law enforcement agencies, vest sponsorships, fund-
raising events and the media within Massachusetts. In 2011, efforts were expanded to
assist police dogs throughout the United States.
For more information or to learn about volunteer opportunities, please call 508-824-
6978. Tax deductible donations and event listings are via the website: www.vik9s.org.

Local real estate specialist and broker Carol K. Page says she enjoys helping people realize their dream of home
ownership. That is why she has been in the business for more than 32 years.
After 5 years working in real estate sales elsewhere, Page opened Lakes & Country Realty in downtown Bloomingdale in 1985. She said she wanted to be closer to her family so she opened her of ce in the village, just down the road from Bloomingdale schools. The location made it possible for her children to walk to the of ce after school. As the name says, the agency special-izes in listing lake homes and vacant land as well as homes throughout the
entire area and commercial properties. Although her children are now grown, Page continues the tradition she started along with realtors Barb Strong, and Liz Billings. All of whom also grew up in the area.

On behalf of the entire Gobles Public Schools Community, let me wish you and your family a happy, healthy summer vacation! All of us at the school who
work with kids for a living can’t help but share the joy students feel on that last day of classes in June when we walk out our doors to carefree days of swimming and softball tournaments, mowing the lawn to make a couple of bucks, riding bikes along the Kal-Haven Trail, and summer nights catching fireflies, roasting marshmallows, hanging out with friends, or camping under the stars.
Summer is a great time to live in Gobles, which is why so many families from other places vacation here, or even call the cabins and cottages in our community home for the summer. To our visitors we say: Welcome to Gobles. It’s a great place to call home, any time of the year.
While summer is a welcome break for students, we stay busy at
the school. We use these months to reflect on the successes and lessons of the school year that just ended, and also to plan for the next school year and all the opportunities that await us when doors open again in September.
This summer we are excited to share with you a new, revised website; it will be released to the public in July, and we think you’ll find it a valuable resource for keeping updated on
all the Gobles Tiger news you need. We are also planning for our new early childhood programs, for our exciting sixth grade academy, and for the expansion of our innovative approach to instruction called the Eight-Step Process which we began to implement last year.
Summer learning is important learning for students, and it can also be fun for the whole family. We encourage you to
keep your child learning all summer. For instance, time spent reading each day is one of the best ways to keep your child’s mind active; also, nature walks, conversations at dinner, family projects, and daily chores all help kids gain the knowledge and skills they need for school.
We will be available for you with regular hours in the district office all summer. If you want to register a new student, or if you have any other school business, the office is open Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.; you can pick up registration forms, or take care of any other business you might have with the school.
Have a wonderful summer! We look forward to seeing you all back in the fall, when those of us who work with your kids for a living will share in the excitement and optimism of a brand-new school year.
Respectfully,Jeff Rehlander

Freddy Lessing was too young to understand all of what was going on during the Holocaust
as a Jewish child in Poland, but old enough to know when his mother hid him, his job was to stay hidden; and that’s how he survived the war, and that dark period of human history.
Now in his eighties, Freddy speaks with visitors to the Holocaust Memorial Center in Farmington Hills, and this May told his story to Gobles eighth-grade students in Veronica Peterson’s English classes visiting the museum to learn the lessons that history, and people like Freddy, have to share.
Students were there as a final experience in response to the book Milkweed, by Jerry Spinelli. The book tells the story of a young boy hiding from the Nazis in Warsaw, Poland; a boy, in many ways, very much like Freddy. Students were captivated by his story, and could really connect what he had to say with the lessons of the book they had been learning in English class.
“Freddy made Milkweed become more than just a book,” said student Emma Harbaugh. “I can’t believe the kinds of things he had to do as a child, and how quickly his childhood ended. He had to grow up and do things most young children can’t do, or he would have been captured and killed. It made me sad for him, but also really inspired by his courage and the courage of his mother.”
According to Peterson she took her students on the field trip because she wants them to understand that in reading about the Holocaust, they are reading about real people and real places, and there are real lessons to learn.
“As a lover of history, I appreciate the time and effort it takes to preserve a memory,” she said. “When we read, and when we meet people like Freddy, history becomes real. This is why I believe in teaching history, even in my English class, so that it does not repeat itself. Students have to care about the history if it’s going to become real to them.”
And it became real. “During class I wrote Freddy a letter thanking him for telling us his story,” Emma Harbaugh said. “I told him that I listened very carefully to what he shared, and that I would not forget it.”
Elementary School Eight-Step Instructional Pilot Program to Expand Across District
Next school year a very successful elementary pilot program will expand across the district, allowing teachers to focus on individual student needs in
math and English/Language-Arts.The Eight-Step Process allows teachers to create very
focused thirty-minute lessons that are directed at specific student needs. This year the elementary school integrated the process into a pilot math program called Success Period, and teachers called the program an amazing success.
“We were amazed at the student growth we saw from Success,” said elementary teacher Michelle Guritz. “With that thirty-minute program built into our schedules, we could be very specific about the instruction we provided for students on math concepts. We could re-teach concepts that students needed to practice more, and we could really provide enrichment for those students who had demonstrated mastery of the skill already.”
Success breaks important math skills down into two or three key concepts, and students are assessed to identify their specific level of mastery. Any student who could use extra time practicing the key concepts was given that time, but for those students who had learned them, they were given problems to solve using those concepts that pushed the level of their mastery to higher levels.
“Teachers absolutely love the program because we saw huge improvement from our students,” Guritz said. “Kids who needed extra time had that without the pressure of feeling other students were moving on without them. And students ready to apply those skills were given multi-step problems to solve that require creativity and other higher-order thinking skills. It’s really a win-win situation for the students.”
Next year the elementary program will expand to include writing skills, and students in the middle and high school will benefit from Success time built into their schedules as well, offering extra practice, re-teaching, and enrichment for students in math, reading, and writing.
Over the summer teachers in both buildings will be coming to professional development events to prepare for the full integration of the Eight-Step Process, so that next school year the amazing results of this successful program will continue to grow.
Legendary poet TS Eliot called April “the cruelest month,” but fifth grade writers in Julie Boes’ class found April to be anything but cruel when it came
to poetry. April is National Poetry Month, and Boes used the month to introduce students to many styles of poetry, making her students successful readers and writers of verse.
“Poetry is part of the fifth grade curriculum, so I decided to focus on it during April, National Poetry Month,” Boes said. “Kids loved it. We incorporated art into the writing process, such as using paint blotches, and then writing about the designs they saw. We wrote with our Kindergarten buddies, and we even read poems we wrote in class on the announcements to share with the school.”
According to Boes, students read and shared poetry, presented poems to one another from her collection of poetry books, and tried their hands at writing in multiple styles. “Kids were so engaged, they didn’t really realize they were writing. They were having fun playing with words and sharing their work.”
During the month Boes received emails from parents thanking her for getting their kids so excited about writing. “I got emails that said things like ‘wow, I didn’t know my kid was such a good writer. My child just loves being in your class.’ And that wasn’t just from kids who were thought of us as the top writers in the class. I saw all my kids succeed, and parents saw it, too.”
At the end of the unit Boes submitted her students’ work to several competitions and publications, and
The 2012-2013 was another championship year for Gobles Tigers athletics, and the spring sports season
ended with teams and individual athletes winning honors in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, and across Michigan.
Athletic Director Chris Miller summed up the year saying he was “beyond proud” of the great scholar athletes who represent our school in the classroom and in competitions.
“We had many of the top teams in the state, every season of competition this year,” Miller said. “In the fall our football team and volleyball teams were ranked. Then in the winter our girls’ basketball team was ranked in the top ten, as was our competitive cheer team. Then this spring we finished with ranked softball and baseball teams, plus excellent results for both golf and track. These young men and women worked very hard and are
a credit to Gobles. It was another great year to be a Gobles Tiger.”
The Gobles golf team took second in the conference behind the play of first-team all conference golfers senior Sam Benson and junior Alex Goldsberry. The team won their way to regional competition at Milham Golf Course on June 1.
Track was represented at the MHSAA D-4 State Championship Meet by Adam Vosburg, Pierce Vreeland, Brandon Blodgett, Devon Gildea, Chase Gardiner, Josiah Dickerson, Kim Barber, Taylor Fifer, Crystal Trevino, Kylee Vosburg, Michaela DeKilder.
The 400 Relay team of Crystal Trevino, Kylee Vosburg, Taylor Fifer, and Kim Barber finished 9th and set a new school record with a time of 52.4! Kim Barber earned All-State honors with her 3rd place finish in the Long Jump with a
jump of 16’9 3/4”!Gobles Baseball won the SAC conference
and finished the season with a #2 ranking in the State of Michigan. The team also won districts, but fell in the regional tournament to another highly ranked team. Many players won post-season honors, as follows: Baseball S.A.C. All Conference: 1st Team - Seth Johnson, Cameron Hansen, Ty Rock, Joey Olsiewicz; 2nd Team - Iain Gildea, Justin Blodgett; Honorable Mention - Brian Hayward, Tucker Rigney, Trevor Rigney; Baseball MHSBCA All-District Team: Cam Hansen, Joey Olsiewicz, Tucker Rigney, Seth Johnson, Justin Blodgett, Iain Gildea, Ty Rock Baseball MHSBCA Academic Team: Brian Hayward, Ty Rock, Joey Olsiewicz, Tucker Rigney, Iain Gildea. Results of All-State balloting was not known at the time of press for this issue of The Homelink.
Gobles Softball won the SAC North, and took second overall in the league. They moved on to win both districts and regionals, but fell in the quarterfinals to the eventual state championship team. Many players also won post season honors, as follows: Softball All Conference: 1st Team - Mollee Nason, Sharyena Hunt, Brianna Gildea, Sydney Wilcox; 2nd Team - Emily Bolhuis, Ashley Boyer; Honorable Mention - Emily Boyer, Haley Rock; Softball MHSSCA All-District Team - Emily Bolhuis, Ashley Boyer, Emily Boyer, Brianna Gildea, Sharyena Hunt, Mollee Nason, Courtney Pasek, Haley Rock, Sydney Wilcox; The All-State softball team also included three Gobles Tigers: Brianna Gildea and Sharyena Hunt were named Honorable-Mention All State, and Mollee Nason was named first-team all state.
Every year at the commencement ceremony, members of the graduating class elect a student in the class to give
the farewell address, and this year’s speaker was student council president Tyler Pasek. His words hit home for his classmates, and are worth sharing. Here is the majority of Tyler’s speech, as written:
...Gobles is the place that for most
of us has been home our entire life. We went to kindergarten together, have been to each other’s houses, played little league and rocket football together, and have been together throughout high school, starting and finishing together. As we begin to look and move forward, we cannot forget to glance back every now and then, remembering that Gobles is the place that is, and will always be home.
No matter where we go after graduation, and when we finally move away from home, Gobles will still be a part of each and every one of us. Our stories are here, our childhood memories, all the good times spent together during high school and in the Senior Hallway. There is a piece of us that will be left behind once we leave, and whenever we come home each of us will find that piece and those memories. It may be in the halls of the high school, where over four years we prepared for this moment today. It may be on the elementary playground where you broke your wrist falling from the monkey bars. Perhaps it is at those Friday night football
games, cheering the team to victory or running the ball to the end zone. It could be in the student section that was 100 strong at winter homecoming.
But maybe it is something that we cannot see or look at and remember. It could be the small town American values that reside within each of us. Things like knowing every face when you walk downtown, or go to the store. Maybe knowing that even on the gloomiest of days, the entire town will turn out for Memorial Day, stirring the patriot inside us all. It could be not worrying about locking your doors or being able to leave your keys in your car because you are not worried about it being broken into.
And while all these memories are what may come to mind when we think of home, I know there are some of my classmates who are ready to wash their hands of Gobles, to move forward and never look back. I know that for many of you the thought of moving on and away from Gobles is an exciting and refreshing idea. I too have days where I am glad to be graduating, and moving on with my life, but then I think of the memories, the good times, and the familiar faces that I will not see every day and I am glad to call Gobles home.
And it is that idea that I want everyone to take with them when they leave today. Soon the days we spent at Football games, at bonfires, going to the beach and gathering as a town will be gone and will be left behind. And when we move forward, we might not be sure where to go or where we will fit in this big world, but that’s ok, because there is a place that we can always call home. And that place is right here, in Gobles...
During the PRIDE celebration breakfast for teachers on June 7, Gobles Superintendent Jeff Rehlander and the PRIDE committee announced the three individuals
recognized as PRIDE teachers of the year for 2013. This year Julie Boes and Scott Seiler were recognized from Gobles elementary, and Loriann Harbaugh was recognized from the Middle/High School building.
According to Rehlander the award celebrates the outstanding teaching and learning that takes place in classroom all over the district all year. He called the three teachers recognized as representatives of the great teaching staff we have in Gobles, as many other outstanding teachers were nominated, and all teachers contributed to the success of our elementary, middle, and high school programs.
“When it comes to teaching, these three individuals are true professionals,” Rehlander said. “They inspire their students and they inspire their colleagues. We are lucky to have them here in Gobles on behalf of the students and families of our community.”
Fifth-grade teacher Julie Boes was recognized by her peers for her creativity and positive, can-do attitude in the classroom, and also for the high standards and expectations she sets for her students. This year her students published outstanding original work in multiple media, including becoming published poets, and creating their own digital media productions.
