Your Typical Planning Meeting

That went well…

Two Carr Productions, LLC © 2017 3

Why are meetings and presentations so often chaotic?

Even with a well planned agenda, a meeting can be like…

The meeting goes something like this…

I have an idea. We can <insert idea here>.

Where’s the data to support that idea?

My gut says that idea is not going to work!

Original Goal – Come away from the meeting with a list of ideas to explore.

Two Carr Productions, LLC © 2017

We are sociologically conditioned to judge thoughts and ideas.

9

Critical Thinking is at the heart of western culture. It’s how we’ve been

taught to think.

Two Carr Productions, LLC © 2017 11

Critical Thinking is primarily concerned with judging the value of

statements and seeking errors.

Two Carr Productions, LLC © 2017

Critical Thinking – always judging, always deciding

12

• School (tests)• Legal (prosecutor vs defense)• Political (debate)• Art (critique)• Job (interview, reviews)• Philosophy (dialectic)• Movie, Music, Food (reviews)• Social Media (likes)

Two Carr Productions, LLC © 2017

We are sociologically conditioned to judge thoughts and ideas.

We are biologically conditioned to focus on one thing at a time.

Pre-conscious activities kick in:• Neuronal clusters pre-activate• Heart rate increases• Adrenalin pumps through body• Visual field narrows• Attention becomes focused

Friend, foe or food… our brain starts making snap judgements.

This “pre-sensitization” is a key part of how the brain works.

Two Carr Productions, LLC © 2017 16

It also means our brains are not wired to direct attention in multiple

directions.

Lateral Thinking

21

•The premise - the human brain thinks in a number of distinctways.

•Thinking can be deliberately challenged. We can “force” our brains to think a certain way.

•In some instances, we don’t want ideas judged.

Two Carr Productions, LLC © 2017 22

What are those distinct ways in which we think?

Two Carr Productions, LLC © 2017 23

The key is to get everyone thinking in the same direction

The meeting goes something like this…

30

I have an idea. We can <insert idea here>.

Let me expand on that idea. We could…

I have a different idea. It’s this…

Two Carr Productions, LLC © 2017 31

Original Goal – Come away from the meeting with a list of ideas to explore.

Two Carr Productions, LLC © 2017 32

Two Carr Productions, LLC © 2017

Black Hat – Somber, Serious

33

Black Hat thinking focuses on difficulties, potential problems. Why something may not work.Black Hats are judgements hats because you are expressing your opinion. The black hat is the most often used of all the hats.

Recall, we’re all trained critical thinkers.

What are the downsides? Is there anything we need to be cautious about? What are the weaknesses we need to overcome?

Two Carr Productions, LLC © 2017

Yellow Hat – Sunny, Positive

34

Yellow Hat thinking focuses on values and benefits. Why something may work.

Yellow Hat thinking should be logically based. It is a judgement hat and not based on fantasy.

You choose to look at the positive aspects or extract a positive interpretation.

Two Carr Productions, LLC © 2017

Red Hat – Emotional, Subjective

35

Red Hat thinking focuses on feelings, hunches, gut instinct and intuition.

Red Hat is a judgement hat. You are expressing your opinion.

How does this make you feel?Do you like or dislike this? What is your gut telling you?

Two Carr Productions, LLC © 2017

White Hat – Neutral, Objective

White Hat thinking focuses on data, facts, information known and needed.

No opinions. No judgement. Just the facts.

What information do we have? What information do we need? What information is missing? What questions do we need to ask?How are we going to get the information we need?

36

Two Carr Productions, LLC © 2017

Blue Hat – Control, Organization

37

Blue Hat thinking focuses on managing the process, next steps, action plans, schedule, budget, timelines, deliverables.

Blue hat is not a judgement hat. No opinions expressed.

What is the subject? What is the goal? What are we thinking about?

Two Carr Productions, LLC © 2017

Green Hat – Creativity, New Ideas

38

Green Hat thinking focuses on creativity: possibilities, alternatives, solutions, new ideas.

A statement of provocation and investigation.Lets see where that thought takes us…

Green Hat is not a judgement hat. Creative ideas should be collected without passing judgement on their “correctness.”Probably the hardest hat for us to wear correctly!

A specific ordering of hats designed to structure the thinking process toward a specific goal.A recipe if you will.
