P 3AUBURN 2009/CENTRAL NATIONALsubmitted by Bobby York

Our trip began with cool morning temperatures as we headed east. I drove my 40 and Jimmy and Connie took their 53 Mer-cury. Richard McClung joined us in his modern VW van. We enjoyed the drive through Arkansas, taking 67 across the stateto avoid I40. We spent the night in Paragould, AR. Our next day’s drive took us through eastern Illinois, along the WabashRiver (lots of 7 foot corn on both sides of the beautiful 2 lane road). We spent the night just south of Danville, IL. After an-other scenic day’s drive we arrived in Auburn, got moved into the rooms, and visited with old friends. We caught up withclub members Tom and Joan Montgomery who’d planned their extended RV trip to include the meet.

The Hampton Inn was the host hotel but, because the meet was so well attended, several other nearby hotels were used. TheGibsons and I were in the Comfort Suites, which actually worked out better for us. Most of the meet activity was at the newmuseum site. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality and amount of material on display. A lot of cut-away assemblies of en-gines, transmissions, and rear assemblies, plus a lot of memorabilia were out for our enjoyment. They had an enormousamount of people’s choice raffle itesm, too. The Gibsons and I won some goodies.

Jimmy and I worked to help survey and lay out the judging field. Rain had come prior to the meet and everyone was eyeingthe sky, hoping the sun would stay out and dry the field. I walked one bunch of miles and I was a tired boy by the end of theday. Luckily, the rain didn’t return to upset our work.

The welcome party was held at the Auburn Duesenberg Museum. The ballroom was full to overflowing. The staff did a greatjjob and everyone was fed quickly and onto the entertainment. They held an auction and raised money for the meet. Oneneon Ford script sign was sold.

On judging day, the ladies were off to their luncheon and unique shopping tour. The guys got everything lined up and bothJimmy and I volunteered to be judges. Jimmy was on the Rouge (unrestored original cars) team and I was asked to do the 46-48 Fords. We had a long day but the cars were truly fine. We had laid out 275 spots and my team had 8 cars to point judge. There were something like 30 unrestored cars at the meet that Jimmy’s team had to evaluate for originality. It was a long day.

Our driving tour consisted of traveling to Shipsewana (Indian name) where we met Mr. Hosteler at his museum and commu-nity center. He made his fortune by observing, as a kid on an Amish farm, how much work went into raising chickens. Hecame up with a unique and effective way to feed and water chickens so loss due to disease spread in common feed and watertroughs could be avoided. From this invention and many others, he was able to invest some of his fortune into a collection ofHudson autos, which are on display in a very fancy museum setting. We also toured the Mennonite/Amish Center where theirhistory and lifestyle were explained. We enjoyed a real Amish style home cooked meal at the Blue Garden Restaurant andBakery. The food was outrageously good and I ate ’til I about popped.

When we arrived back in Auburn, the town had blocked off the city square and 50’s music was piped outside as we enjoyedthe atmosphere of an old community gathering. One whole side of the square was full of 34 Fords for their 75th anniversarycelebration.

The next day, the Foundation Museum was dedicated. We attended the ceremonyunder a beautiful sky and fairly comfortable temperatures. Next door to the Founda-tion Museum, our awards banquet was held in the ballroom of the World War IIMuseum. We got a welcome call from Andy Granatelli who is opening a racingmuseum in the neighborhood. Jimmy and Connie won a first place touring awardfor their 53 Mercury.

On Wednesday, we said goodbye to all our friends. I had some club businessto conduct in Dearborn, so, the Gibsons and Richard “hung out” in Ft. Waynewhile I was gone. (Be sure to ask both Jimmy and Richard about the treasuresthey found in the antique/junk shops during the trip). Once reunited, we drovethe back roads through Indiana. For a change of scenery, we came south downthe west side. We traveled from Loagansport, IN to Paragould, AR where wespent the night before rising early and heading home. We traveled over 2770miles on the trip and, happily, neither Jimmy nor I had to put a wrench on eithercar during the entire time. Looking forward to Charlotte next year.

On display, one of six ‘36 stainlesssteel Fords built by Allegheny Steel

The New 1935 Ford

Ideas were popping around April of 1935 at Briggs Manu-facturing Company. There were two styling sections atBriggs, John Tjaarda being charged with experimental cardesign exercises while the second group did speculative de-signs for Briggs’ regular customers, notably Ford and Plym-oth. Phil Wright reportedly did the renderings for the ‘35Ford at his home, then showed them to his boss, Ralf Rob-erts who in turn showed them to Ford management, includ-

ing Edsel Ford. Edsel was delighted! Shortcuts were taken and orders went out to go right to a full scale mockupof wood, rather than through the customary 1/24th scale models. Henry for was going with Edsel’s suggestions, atlast.

The Obsessive Collector

I took on a project this last Friday that I had put off for years! My 20x20 storage building had become FibberMcGee’s closet! Just the boxes of magazines were overwhelming! I had collected not only car magazines but gar-dening magazines, Life, Playboy since it’s inception, to mention just a few. I had boxes of early hot rod magazineswith titles such as Honk, Hop Up, Carcraft, Speed Age, Motor Trend, Cars and Parts (which were small magazinesat one time), Hemmings (also the early small editions), a huge collection of newspapers called Drag News. And,Ford magazines: Ford Illustrated, Ford Life (authored by the late Lorin Sorrensen), Ford Cars and Parts, Hop UpYour Flathead, 25 boxes of Ford Times going all the way back to 1946, and a complete collection of Ford dealerNews.

I once read a story about a friend of Jay Leno who had a house in the San Fernando Valley that had a couple of 50’sera Buicks in the front yard. Jay said he went through the back door to the kitchen and there was a double sink. One of the sinks was filled with carburetor cleaner and car parts were soaking in it. Jay said he noticed none of thecabinets had doors and they were filled with parts from old Buicks, all carefully labeled. As Jay went from room toroom, the rooms were filled with Buick fenders, wheels, tires, and other treasures. So, Jay said to the man, “Singleman, are you?” He responded, “Yeah! How’d you know? The wife left years ago. Now, I can do what I want andcollect my Buick stuff.”

Peggy says she’s not going anywhere. So....I guess I’ll just have to get over mourning over the hundreds of maga-zines I did throw away and stick to just hoarding the Ford, Mercury, and Lincoln literature. By the way, we DOstill have cabinet doors in the kitchen.
