HOSPITALITY MOVES BETWEEN THE SERVICES
Between the Services – Education and Fellowship Emphasis
Sunday Coffee Hour is back at 9:00am! It will lead naturally into education opportunities for all ages at 9:30. Beginning January 15th the hospitality offered after the 10:30 service will discontinue and be replaced by refreshments at 9:00am. Teams are being formed to provide very simple snacks to compliment the coffee hour. Deacon Joe Mills resumes his weekly class on the Sunday Readings on January 8th.
Beginning January 15th come to the education hour. Here are the opportunities:
Children and Youth Classes for all Ages – Our children’s classes have a biblical focus and they use creative stories or arts and crafts projects to engage the students on biblical or seasonal themes.
Sunday Lectionary Class – Deacon Joe Mills gathers interested adults in the parish office to examine in some depth the background and meanings of the Bible readings of the day. As a liturgical church we benefit from our consistent exposure to Holy Scriptures from the Law, the Writings, the Psalms, the Epistles and the Gospels.
Hallelujah: The Bible and Handel’s Messiah – Fr. Price will lead four session exploring the Scriptural texts of Handel’s Messiah. The four sessions cover: Comfort, Comfort My People; Who Shall Abide the Day of His Coming?; For Unto us a Child Is Born; Glory to God in the Highest.
ANNUAL PARISH MEETING
The annual parish meeting will be held between the services at 9:15
am on Sunday, January 22nd. Annual reports will be distributed, along
with a featured presentation by our Youth Minister, Ryan Perry. We
will also be electing one Verna Browning trustee to serve for a period
of three years.

A New Year: Not Doom, Delight!
Sensationalists of various stripes will be hyping how the Mayan calendar ends with what we call, in our calendar terms, December of 2012. Will we worry? No. Episcopalians are many things, but “sensationalists” is not a term that fits. Our tradition has never been plagued with emotionalism or end-times anxiety. We would rather work for good then hype the apocalypse. God declared the creation good in our story of beginnings, God so delighted in the world that he gave his only Son. Celebration and delight is the motivation for our work. We are moved by beauty and joy, not by worries and dubious interpretations of signs.
Because of our focus of optimism, our motto would be “Dig and Delve in 2012” not “Save Yourselves in 2012”. We prefer not to panic. We would rather dig for the outreach that is possible in our community, and the invitation to people looking for a church home, and a community of grace and faith. We would rather delve into deeper relation to God, and relation and care with one another. One of our emphases will be the 9:00 hour on Sunday morning as an opportunity for Christian formation for all ages, and a building of unity and fellowship, as you will read about elsewhere in this issue of the Outpost. Our energy turns toward hospitality between the Sunday morning liturgies, so that members who attend the early and late services can all avail themselves to this time for learning and fellowship.
Come one, come ALL! On January 22rd our Annual Parish Meeting, at 9:15 a.m. is important for all of us to attend. We receive year end reports from 2011 and articulate initiatives for 2012. We will culminate our stewardship emphasis, and see the shape of our new budget. Even in the final weeks of December and first weeks of January, people are turning in pledges to help the parish reach and exceed our mission goals for the new year. Our very special feature will be to celebrate the vitality of our Youth Ministry led by our Director of Alvin Christian Youth Programs, Ryan Perry.
Finally consider one of the marvelous adult classes on Sunday morning. The grand opening for these classes in 2012 will be January 15th, and they will resume again a week after the Annual Parish Meeting on January 29th. Deacon Joe teaches a fabulous discussion class on the Sunday Lessons of Scripture. The rector will introduce a class called Hallelujah: The Bible and Handel’s Messiah.
So 2012 is not the end of the world: each of you can make it the end of worry, and the beginning of meaningful service in Christ’s Holy Name.

DONATIONS TO YOUTH MINISTRY
The “Alvin Christian Youth Program” is a co-op program of Grace Episcopal Church and the First Christian Church of Alvin. One third of the overall funding for the program is provided by each of the member churches, and one third by donations. At a fundraising dinner in December, $4,500 was pledged toward our goal of $8,100 with $2,000 already collected. If you would like to contribute or make a pledge to this fund, please contact Youth Minister Ryan Perry or the Parish Office. Our youth need your support.

MISSIONARY FUNDING
GRACE CHURCH PAYS FULL MISSIONARY SUPPORT
As an Episcopal Parish, part of our privilege and responsibility is to support our diocese: its infrastructure and its common missionary endeavors. Paying our assessment is a binding requirement. Paying the amount asked for special ministries and mission support has been a challenge year to year. Through the years we have paid the percentage of the "Missionary Asking" that was possible within our budget limitations. Our Diocesan support is now organized into four categories: the assessment - $11,228, the health insurance assessment - $13,460, diocesan missionary asking - $10,720, and local outreach spending $10,820 (the amounts shown are specific to Grace Church, Alvin.) This is the first time in recent years that we have taken on the full payment of the canonically required and voluntary categories. It is meet and right and a considerable joy to do our full part.
VESTRY THANK YOU
Our Vestry of the past year has led diligently and effectively; we are so fortunate to have people who step forward to serve God and their church family in this way. Completing their terms are Margaret Barrier, Lynne Bruner, and Rod Dockal. We thank them for their time and the investment of their gifts to the benefit of the parish. We also give thanks for our wardens, Glennie Hefner and Wayne Bell. Glennie served as Senior Warden for two years in leadership on the vestry, and in key projects of the church. Wayne, having served three years, continues as Junior Warden. With Rod Dockal and Charlie Lamb, Wayne has maintained our buildings and grounds and made repairs and improvements resulting in substantial savings to the church.

DECEMBER 2011 VESTRY MEETING MINUTES
The Rector called the meeting to order with prayer at 7:03 P.M. with the following present: Glennie Hefner, Wayne Bell, Lynne Bruner, Rod Dockal, Margaret Barrier (after 7:26 P.M.), Mark Patterson, Thomas W. Peebles, and the Reverend David W. Price, Rector. Also present were Vestry members-elect Kati Garner and Aubrey Stokes. Absent were Donna Tate and John Bergmann.
Peebles moved to approve the minutes of November 15, 2011. Seconded by Bruner. The motion to approve carried unanimously. Danny Hermann reviewed the Treasurer’s Report . Following discussion Peebles moved to approve the Treasurer’s Report subject to audit. Seconded by Bell. The motion to approve carried unanimously.
The Rector reported that Sunday morning attendance is 103.He ordered new curriculum for adult Sunday School that will be introduced on January 15, 2012. He will repeat the classes on Tuesdays at 11:00 A.M. Hospitality would no longer take place with a meal following the 10:30 A.M. Sunday service. It will be replaced with a light breakfast snack between the two services weekly. Hefner offered to coordinate hospitality in January. Bell suggested that each household should receive a flyer announcing the change. Perhaps there might be a luncheon once a quarter. Bell reported that Bergmann had built a wooden box around the pipes on the south side of the Parish House. Dockal remarked that he would see that boxes will be properly grounded. He announced that a device was installed on the bell tower that limits how far the bell can be swung.
The Rector reported that 59 pledges had been turned in. He asked that we treat the time from January 1, 2012 until the parish meeting on January 22, 2012 as a time to visit with those who have not pledged. Hefner offered to visit with Leah Jones, Stewardship Chair.
The 2012 budget cannot be finalized until the stewardship figures are final. The new Vestry will meet on January 17, 2011 to adopt a budget.
Peebles moved that the Treasurer be instructed to pay bills based on the 2011 budget from January 1, 2012 until the adoption of the 2012 budget. Seconded by Bruner. The motion carried unanimously.
Stokes reported that $4,600 in pledges to ACYP had been received at the dinner on December 10. More pledges have been received since that time.
It was reported that the youth continue to meet at First Christian Church during the school year, and they will meet at Grace Church during the summer. It was agreed to postpone the Ministry Appreciation dinner from January 15, 2012 to a date set by the Vestry at the retreat.
The Vestry retreat is scheduled for Saturday, January 7, 2012 from 9:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. at Glennie Hefner’s office.
The Rector reported that he had not heard from the Diocese on the grant the church has applied for to assist with a Newcomers Ministry. The next meeting was scheduled for January 17, 2012, and the Annual Parish Meeting was scheduled for January 22. The Rector announced that Peebles would serve as Senior Warden in 2012. Hefner thanked all for supporting her during her tenure as Senior Warden. Peebles moved to adjourn. Seconded by Bell. The motion to adjourn carried unanimously. The meeting adjourned with prayer at 8:21 P.M.
