Home News
Though beautiful throughout the year, our Veterans Home at King is particularly so as we observe the rebirth of spring. After the long cold
winter, more birds are returning, the grass is vibrantly greener, flowers are being planted and the trees have leaves again.
From within the halls at King and while traversing outdoors, the home’s scenic views surrounding Rainbow Lake are a beautiful setting for our veterans, their families and the surrounding community. King is a five-star quality of care facility in a five-star setting. Our recent groundbreaking ceremony on campus with Governor Tony Evers highlighted the WDVA’s commitment to service and making sure our veterans and their families receive the best care possible in Wisconsin.
When it’s complete, John R. Moses Hall will greatly fit in with King’s legacy and will go a long way toward achieving our collective goals. We are looking forward to watching the progression of the building and eagerly anticipate its completion — I know it will be a very welcome and needed addition to King’s campus.
The groundbreaking event came a couple weeks before Memorial Day, when we gather together to pay our respects and commemorate the courageous service of the fallen. The three WDVA-run cemeteries – including the Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in King – each host beautiful memorial services to make sure that we always remember their dedication and brave service to our country.
On Memorial Day, we reflect on and appreciate the service of the men and women who risked their lives in the face of danger. They are brothers and sisters who fought for us and our freedoms and left a void in millions of families across the country. Their commitment and dedication to duty must always be remembered.
This month, and throughout the year, we set the example for others as we hold observances to remember and honor all who served and especially those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

WISCONSIN VETERANS HOME AT KINGHome News
Like you, I enjoy being invited to special events. It makes me feel special. I enjoy receiving the
invitation and then responding and attending the occasion. When I am going through a difficult time there are times that I wish that someone would call to encourage me and invite me out to just talk things through. However, I have come to realize that every time I am faced with what seems to be an overwhelming circumstance, I do have an invitation from someone quite special who has everything that I need for my present situation.
In the book of Matthew chapter eleven (11) the invitation of Christ comes with great blessing. Before we examine that verse together, I want to share with you a wonderful promise of Christ’s: “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 NKJV.
When trouble comes our way, we may look to sources outside of ourselves to settle or take care of the matter. I have discovered that in every dilemma in life it is an opportunity to accept Jesus’ invitation to “Come unto Me, all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28) As we engage in life, as we face the difficulties and challenges that it can bring we must learn to pause and accept Christ’s invitation to go to Him. As we do, we must place our concern (s) into His care. As we do this, we must also ask Him to teach us the things that He would like for us to learn, what it is that He would have you do
and how it is that He would have you respond. Then, follow His lead! Remember His yoke is easy and His burden light. Give the matter over to Him and you will find rest for your soul!
Too often we impulsively seek to take care of things without consulting the God of the universe who desires to use us inn a mighty way as well as reveal His power through us! When we take matters into our own hands with out His consultation, direction, guidance and power, the result is often times feelings of angst, disappointment, sadness and unrest.
As we look at John 16:33 Jesus said that we would face tribulations. However, as we look closely at the verse, He also said that our peace would come from Him. So, look to Him! As we do, He will give us peace, protection, direction, power, assurance, and rest for our souls. As we follow His lead we can be of good cheer knowing that He has already overcome the world! Allow Him to make you an overcomer too!
The Invitation

This story seems like it will be a bit more difficult to put down on paper so please be patient with
me…..it’s my hope that this story comes through the way it should and doesn’t upset anyone.
My birth family was an awfully dysfunctional one. Sadly, Dad was an alcoholic and a very dedicated womanizer. He always had money for his booze and his girlfriends but wouldn’t give Mother money for groceries or for the light bill. However, he proudly showed us the beautiful diamond ring or large bundle of cash allocated for one of his girlfriends. Life was difficult for Mother.
By this time there were ten of us kids so our house was a nightmare of activity. With kids ages newborn to seventeen life was crazy in our house. Late afternoon the kids were all home and everybody was hungry. Dad worked until 4pm and worked approximately a ten-minute drive away from home. Mother would have supper ready around five o’clock. Then we would wait for Dad. As soon as he finished work he headed for a local bar where his dearest one waited. There they cuddled and drank for hours before deciding it was time for him to come home. After waiting two-or-three hours we were finally allowed to eat supper and no longer waited for Dad to get home. It was late for the kids to eat considering they still had their schoolwork to finish before bedtime. Finally, around nine-or-nine-thirty Dad would get home. Oh, what a blowup there would be because we didn’t wait for supper for him.
Dishes started flying, both at Mom and around her, along with cursing and swearing at her. He decided he wouldn’t eat any of the food prepared for our meal
earlier. He insisted that Mom make him something completely different. Dutifully, Mom went to the kitchen to make something more appealing to my father’s elaborate pallet. When she returned from the kitchen the flying dishes began all over again if there was too much of something in the food, or not enough of something.
All the kids cowered in fear at the outrageous behavior playing out before them. Mother stood at attention waiting for the next volley to sail in her direction. Finally I couldn’t stand it anymore! This browbeaten lady standing there was my beloved Mother. She does not need to put up with this little-kid behavior.
I let words fly at my father telling him what he was doing to Mother and the other kids; that he had plenty of time to get home in time to eat a decent meal. Also that he had no right to be sitting in a bar with his current girlfriend when he should be home with his wife and family. I pointed out to him that he was not going to keep throwing dishes and food at my Mother. She is not his dog!!! (Most guys would treat their dog better than he treated Mom.)
Well, needless to say, that probably was a pretty stupid thing for a sixteen-year-old girl to do to a deranged parent. But I couldn’t stand my precious Mother being treated like that. And with my family history I was never on Dad’s hit list anyway unless it was his special kind of “hit”. You see, it was decided before I was born that they would not keep me. I was going to be sold because he wanted to name

me after his girlfriend and Mom wouldn’t allow it. Therefore they also wouldn’t name me. Finally the doctor named me after his daughter which is fine with me.
But back to the present fun and games at our house….after my giving Dad my opinion of his childish behavior and his treatment of my dear Mother he threw himself off his chair and headed for me. He slammed me on one side of my head and then the other, yelling all the while.
Dummy me, I took delight in taunting him, mocking him saying what a great man he was to be treating women and children the way he does. Wham, I’d get it again so I laughed again and pointed out how good it must make him feel to be such a “hero”. Now he would have something more to share with his beloved bar fly girlfriend. More bangs, hits and shouts. Since he couldn’t shut me up he threw me out of the house.
Blockhead that I am, I went. He had been throwing me out ever since I was thirteen so I would rent a room in some lady’s home with no cooking privileges but a place to sleep. After school every night that I was scheduled I went to work at my job (once as a long distance operator until midnight or one AM.) When I got home I would open a can of Chef Boy Ardee’s pasta and eat it cold. Then time to
get my homework done. A few hours later I’d be up again for school.
I’m so sorry that this sounds like a horrible story. Fortunately, it isn’t as bad as it seems. For years I had longed for my father’s affection and it never came. I knew that Dad had been an unwanted child himself; never able to live in his Mother’s house. So he was raised by his grandparents in a dirt floor log cabin. His uncle (who also lived there) was a pretty wild-livin’ fella and severely influenced Dad’s life style. Of course that doesn’t excuse him but it helped me understand him a little better.
As time went on Dad and I began a more moderate behavior. Mother died so he went gung ho for his #1 girl. He even brought her to my house so I could “enjoy” her also. I wasn’t impressed but it apparently meant something to Dad. He even started writing me letters telling me how much his “love” meant to him. His letters continued to arrive, usually full of praise and love for his “heart’s desire” but eventually wandering into other areas. One day a letter came from Dad and I read it once. I couldn’t believe it so I read it again and again and again.
MY DADDY SAID HE LOVED ME!
(And I love my Daddy!)

Re-Creation Came to Visit! This was a spectacular event, members were in tears and over joyed with these young people and their performances. Jay and his group not only sang wonderfully, they also mingled after with members and signed pictures for them. A total of around 125 members attended this event and all said they were completely blown away by the talent of these youngsters.

City of Endless Night by Preston & Child What begins as a manhunt for the missing daughter of a wealthy tech billionaire becomes something altogether different when the young woman’s body is discovered in an abandoned warehouse in Kew Gardens, Queens, the head nowhere to be found. It appears there may be two killers on the loose--one responsible for the young woman’s death, another responsible for the mutilation. A pair of such dastardly killers requires a team of equally talented investigators. Luckily, both Vincent D’Agosta and Special Agent Pendergast are back in town. D’Agosta hopes that working a case back on his home turf for the first time in years will reinvigorate the FBI Special Agent and give him an opportunity to flex his investigative might. But neither is prepared to face a killer--or killers--as diabolical as this. It will take all of Pendergast and D’Agosta’s intelligence and strength simply to match wits--let alone stay alive.
Sulfur Springs by William Kent Kreuger On the Fourth of July, just as fireworks are about to go off in Aurora, Minnesota, Cork O’Connor and his new bride Rainy Bisonette listen to a desperate voicemail left by Rainy’s son, Peter. The message is garbled and full of static, but they hear Peter confess to the murder of someone named Rodriguez. When they try to contact him, they discover that his phone has gone dead. The following morning, Cork and Rainy fly to Coronado County in southern Arizona, where Peter has been working as a counselor in a well-known drug rehab center. When they arrive, they learn that Peter was fired six months earlier and hasn’t been heard from since. So they head to the little
desert town of Sulfur Springs where Peter has been receiving his mail. But no one in Sulfur Springs seems to know him. They do, however, recognize the name Rodriguez. Carlos Rodriguez is the head of a cartel that controls everything illegal crossing the border from Mexico into Coronado County. As they gather scraps of information about Peter, Cork and Rainy are warned that there is a war going on along the border. “Trust no one in Coronado County,” is a refrain they hear again and again. And to Cork, Arizona is alien country. The relentless heat and absence of water, tall trees, and cool forests feel nightmarish to him, as does his growing sense that Rainy might know more about what’s going on than she’s willing to admit. And if he can’t trust Rainy, who can he trust?
Spymaster by Brad Thor A rumor, a remote cabin in Norway, and an American intelligence operative charged with stopping the next world far before it begins-Scot Harvath’s mission is one of the deadliest he has ever undertaken. Across Europe, a secret organization has begun attacking diplomats. Back in the United States, a foreign ally demands the identity of a highly placed covert asset. In the balance hang the ingredients for all-out war. With his mentor out of the game, counterterrorism operative Scot Harvath must take on the role he has spent his career avoiding. But, as with everything else he does, he intends to rewrite the rules—all of them.

It sure seems like this weather can’t make up its mind! Snow, rain, sunshine, freezing rain and lightning? That’s Wisconsin weather for you; “weather” rain or shine, we are sure to entertain! Have ya heared? The work therapy skit was a knee-slapping success, along with our western-themed Gala; we even had one of our members celebrate their 100th birthday this month. Happy Birthday Bob Reigel! The Easter bunny hopped on by spreading joy to the units, and we celebrated all of our special work therapy members with a meal as a thank you to all you do for King. Did you see your evil twin? Look like someone similar to you? We sure did in Stordock with the look-alike contest. It was so much fun. We are looking forward to what the summer brings.
