It is a known fact thatmany butterflies obtain their color thanks to interference phenomena. Theirwings are composed of nano-sized transparent layered structures which selectively filter light andreflectmostly onewavelength, depending on the exact structure and interspatial distance betweenlayers, so we see a single bright color. For instance the wings of themale Morpho Rhetenor appearbright blue. But the wing material is not, in fact, blue; it is transparent and just appears bluebecause of particular nanostructures on the surface.A similar effect is used to create the color ofKROMATIX™ solar glass but on the contrary to butterflies’wings, the transmittance of the colored glass, which is acrucial factor for energyproduction, is alsooptimized.
