The MVEer Monthly November 2019
Land O’ Lakes District Contest
The Mighty MVE sang magnificently on the Mayo Presentation Hall stage in Rochester, Minnesota on Saturday, October 26. Thank you to Bonita Ziegler for
this photo when Bryan Ziegler is singing with us on If I Can Dream.
The chorus celebrates 30 years this year. And on stage with us were three great founding members: Harry Hanson, Jim Franklin, and Walt Ziegler.
Also joining for the first
time on stage in a district or international
barbershop contest were Nick Beaudin and Mathis
Murphy.
The MVE won the AA Plateau and scored enough to be a wild card for International.
Hilltop edged us out for first place, and we took the second place award. Great
Northern Union sang earlier in the contest, so we didn’t get to see them perform.

Interview of New Member Ethan Brew
MVEer asks: Ethan, we a very happy you are singing with the MVE. You are a lead. What is
your singing background?
Ethan replies: I played trombone and bass
guitar since I was a little kid, but in 7th grade I joined my Middle School choir and I was hooked. I
loved it. In High School, all four years, I was in a barbershop quartet, the show choir, and also
performed in our musical theater, including a featured duet.
One thing that was a constant through these singing and musical opportunities is that I made great friends that continue into college at MSOE and my work life
today.
MVEer asks: I kind of knew you went to MSOE as your email gives that away (email: ethan.brew@alumni.msoe.edu ). What was your favorite memory singing
with Dylan Keegan and Matt Post at MSOE?
Ethan replies: You are right, I went to MSOE and graduated in May of 2018.
While I majored in mechanical engineering, I really loved the various choirs and musical outlets there. I sang in the Men’s Choir and the Combined Choir
throughout college. I even had the opportunity to direct both the men’s and women’s choir.
I was looking for a picture of a quartet I sang with. It included several familiar
names: Matt Post, Dylan Keegan, me, and Eric Pasbrig (who we are actively recruiting for the MVE). But I couldn’t find a picture of us.
MVEer ask: Did you grow up in Wisconsin?
Ethan replies: Yes, I grew up in Appleton all the way through High School. But
I’ve been in the Milwaukee area since coming down to MSOE and now
working here. My parents are still in
Appleton. My brother, Alec, studies at the University of Michigan – Flint.
MVEer asks: Now that you are an
Engineer and graduated from MSOE, what are you doing for a living?
Ethan replies: I work for Collins
Aerospace in New Berlin as a Mechanical Design Engineer. Among
6
other things, our firm (a subsidiary of United Technologies)
creates aircraft-grade coaxial cables, equipment trays, and
lighting systems in helicopters and aircraft. Currently, we are
subsidiary of United Technologies, but in time we will be a part of
Raytheon, as United
Technologies is being
divided up into three parts and the aerospace part joins Raytheon.
MVEer asks: We know about your joy in singing, but have you
other hobbies or interests? We'd love to hear about them?
Ethan replies: Besides singing, I
also have had bands where I played Bass Guitar. In one of them Dylan Keegan was the lead vocalist. We’ve been
talking about getting that back together again.
MVEer says: Well, if we ever do a
Glam Rock Band set, you will definitely be featured!
Ethan, we are so glad you joined us. We are stronger with
you. Welcome to the Mighty MVE.

All Chapter Chorus and the new Pole Cat Dance Card
For the fourth year, Steve Zorn organized the All Chapter Chorus with 73 men
and women (16 Basses, 21 Baritones, 22 Leads, 16 Tenors) to sing Ride the
Chariot and Between You and Birds and Bees and Cupid. From the MVE we had
Jim Ansay, Neil Johnson, Dick Marcus, and Matt Nagel on stage on Saturday
night at 7PM.
The Commodores (from Minneapolis) instituted a new, all weekend opportunity for guys to sing 10 pole cat songs to win a beer and barbershop pin. The idea was
to sing with people from all over and jot their Chapter abbreviations on their dance cards.
The songs were Wild Irish Rose, Wait ‘til The
Sun Shines Nellie, Sweet and Lovely, Down
Our Way, Honey Little ‘Lize Medley, Let Me Call You Sweetheart, Sweet Roses of Morn,
Shine On Me, Heart of My Heart, and Sweet Adeline. Perhaps our chorus can refresh us on
these polecats.
At the BHS website the booklet is $6.67 containing all these songs,
https://shop.barbershop.org/barberpole-cat-songbook-vol-i-print/ but I suppose the MVE
has some somewhere. Or listen and practice to some of them at:
https://wwwowww.me/barbershop-polecat-86/.

Congratulations to Check, er, Stalemate!
Harry Hanson, Brad Charles, Jim Franklin, and Dave Baxter competed and sang beautifully as Stalemate. They were past district champions as Checkmate,
but that name has now been taken by
others, so now they
are Stalemate.
They qualified as the Land O’ Lakes
representative to compete for the
Seniors Quartet Championship in
Jacksonville, Florida, January 7-12, 2020 at
the Midwinter
Convention.
Looking snazzy guys.
Go Stalemate Go!
You will do great at
Midwinter.

Other Quartets Competing or Performing on the ADC Show
The 2009 District Champions, Expedition, of Jeremy
Ganswindt, Jay Fahl, Jake Umhoefer, and Bryan
Ziegler, were a crowd-
pleasing favorite. They came back together for their 10th
Anniversary performance. We hope they come back together
often.
Croooooooooon … Midnight
Croon of Josh Umhoefer, Jeff Reifsnyder, Tim Zielke, and
Patrick McAlexander came in their posh purple velvet sports
coats as our 2014 District Champions. They sound
wonderful.
[EDITOR’S NOTE: Tim Zielke let me touch the velvet of his
sleeve. Yup, it’s velvet, just like
their sound.]
In the quartet competition, Vocal Fury of Chris Vander Pas, Jay Carey, Michael
Blair, and Nathan Seager (l-r) sang up a storm. They won third place. Congrats Chris. Well done. Love your
“shark skin” suits guys. Tom Weber had to explain it to Dylan, Rachel, and Dick
who wanted to reach out
to touch the shiny fabric.

Engagements!
Rachel Luczak and Dylan
Keegan are engaged. You are such a great couple. Congrats
and much happiness.
Love is definitely in the air as
Sarah Alfieri and Patrick McAlexander got engaged in October. Best wishes to you both.
We should all sing to them in 4-part harmony:
“So Much in Love,” The Lemon Squeezy version.
