Introduction

• The moon is an object that orbits the Earth. It is the second brightest object in the sky.

Size

• The moon is almost more than one quarter the size of the Earth. Its diameter through its center is 2,200 miles.

Shape

• The sun shines light on the moon to make the moons phases look different. The moon’s actual shape is a sphere.

Location

• The moon is between the sun and the Earth. But sometimes, the Earth is between the sun and the moon. Because of the moon’s orbit, this causes this to happen.

Composition

• The moon is mostly made of rock. The surface has thousands of pits called craters.

Ability to support life

• There is no oxygen on the moon and at night the temperature drops to – 243*F. So it does not have the ability to support life.

Ability to produce light

• The moon doesn’t support light. Instead, it reflects the sun’s light to give the moon light.

Additional facts

• Sometimes the moon and the sun are in line to make a solar eclipse.

• It takes the moon about 27 days to make one trip around the earth.

• During the daytime when the moon faces the suns lit surface it gets about 225*F.
