The current economy has businesseslooking for ways to do more with less,
and that applies to hiring too. Social media iseveryone’s friend in this climate. It’s inex-pensive for employers to use and free to thejob seeker.
Among professional networking tools,LinkedIn is king. As of December 2015, Linke-dIn claims a total of over 400 million mem-bers. With the use of a few choice searchterms, a recruiter can zero in on the candi-dates who fit their criteria most precisely.Having instantaneous access to those individ-uals’ work histories, recommendations, and
accredited skill sets is equally helpful to thetime-starved Human Resources Manager. “Itreally does a lot of the work for them andbrings it into a concise, clear profile of whatthat candidate has to offer,” says RobertHansen, Assistant Network Administrator andLinkedIn expert at WorkLink EmploymentSociety.
On the flip side, the service makes it easyfor the job seeker to create a high qualityprofile; see Page 9 for 5 Practices to GetStarted on LinkedIn. But even the world’smost commanding profile will not get youhired without benefit of connections. Oftenit’s not what you know, but who you know.

In another couple of months, Vancouver Island will beabuzz with framers' markets, their stalls spilling over
with brilliant shades of pink, green, orange and yellow. It’s afeast for the senses, but also an opportunity to exchangeideas with friends and neighbours. As any locavore will tellyou, the markets promote healthy eating by connecting con-sumers with farmers and fostering awareness around whatgoes on your plate.
Epicure, a company headquartered on a 33-hectare farm inNorth Saanich, aims to spread a similar message from withinthe home: With the right tools, even time-crunched workingparents need not sacrifice quality ingredients when preparingmeals. “At Epicure, we’re not radical fanatics; we’re passion-ate realists who challenge the food industry and rally aroundclean eating,” reads the company website.
Epicure’s vision grew out of Founder Sylvie Rochette’s im-pulse to sell her spice mixes at local markets in the mid-90s.The part-time business allowed her to stay home with herkids, and her creations minimized the time she spent in frontof the stove. Today, thousands of independent consultants,most of them women, do the selling for Epicure at privatehome parties, or cooking classes.
The company claims it shipped the height of Mt. Everest inExtraordinary Cheese Dip Gift Collections last year. Support-ing the sky-high sales are some 160 employees at the “HomeOffice” in North Saanich. And that number is growing. Thecompany hopes to find new team members at a job fair host-ed by GT Hiring Solutions on March 16. “Aside from the tech-nical skills specific to each opening, we are looking forpeople who show some energy around clean food and healthyeating,” says HR Generalist Michelle Philpott.
The prospect of reporting to work on a farm in North Saan-ich appeals to West Coasters, and job vacancies at Epicure reg-ularly draw 50 to 100 applicants. One way to stand out from
the crowd, according to Michelle, is to get creative with the“what makes you unique” field on the application form. Youmight explore what clean eating means to you, or how you’veused the product. There is a wealth of information on the com-pany’s mission and its corporate culture at epicurev2.com.
Also readily apparent on the website is the diversity of ex-pertise required to bring more than 200 spice blends andgourmet food products to our kitchens. Current openings in-clude Custodial Supervisor, Photo + Video Assistant, Receiving+ Inventory Clerk, and Customer Experience Team Lead.Some positions are easier to fill than others. A shortage offood manufacturing in the region makes it hard for Michelleto find people with the necessary food background to work inthe Operations department, for example. “Job seekers areoften misled by our pretty banners and glossy catalogues atfairs,” Michelle says. “They think we’re just after designers,but we’ve got a huge warehouse to operate.”
Applicants who make it past the interview are able to 1)articulate how their past experience relates to the role theyare applying for; 2) answer situational questions; and 3) dem-onstrate a willingness to learn about the how they can bestfit into the big picture. “Our team members, as we callthem, work really hard to support Epicure’s goals,” explainsMichelle, who raves about the office-wide meals, where ev-eryone comes together to try the product and have some fun.“If you’re willing to learn and expand your palette, there islots of opportunity here to take on more responsibility — weremain a fairly lean team.” Lean, perhaps, but well fed.

Those of you who buy the weekend edition of theGlobe & Mail may have noticed that the newsstand
price has climbed to four dollars. For that reason, I don’tbuy it as much as I used to, but I was glad I picked it up acouple of weeks ago. The Feb. 12 issue contained a multi-page breakdown of the tourism industry across the country.The low loonie is having an immense impact in this industryand the long term trends indicate future growth as well.
The size of the tourism sector in Canada may surprisesome. The Globe points out that this industry has a biggerimpact on the economy than mining, forestry and agricul-ture. In it’s never-ending yo-yoing, our loonie will at somepoint claw its way back to par with the American dollar, butthis sector will continue to grow.
The tip of the baby-boomer spear has now retired or willbe doing so very soon. They will shortly be followed by therest of their cohort. The average senior lives much longerthan in the past, remains more active, and looking for traveland recreational opportunities. At the same time, there aremore people leaving the workforce than entering it. Thisdouble whammy is going to impact the tourism sector in aprofound way.
In 2014 the Canadian Tourism Human Resource Councilestimated that, by 2030, tourism labour shortages could sur-pass a quarter of a million jobs across the country. go2hr, BCtourism industry’s human resource association, reported sev-eral years ago that more than 100,000 job openings in theprovince are expected by 2020. Currently the worker short-age is felt most acutely in communities like Whistler andTofino where a lack of affordable housing makes it evenmore challenging to recruit workers. As tourism continues to

grow and become a prominent part of our economy, theseshortfalls will impact the rest of our province.
In recent years, tourism operators were able to turn to theTemporary Foreign Worker Program to fill vacancies. A crackdown on that program has forced the sector to re-think its longterm strategy in regards to recruiting and retaining workers.
People who work in this field often do not stay in it. Thecombination of low wages, irregular shifts, seasonal outagesand lack of career growth forces them into post-secondaryeducation or other careers. Tourism businesses often operateon thin margins and increased wage costs would be passed onto customers. As the Globe points out, however, the tourismpie is growing in Canada and the demographic trends are cre-ating new customers each day as the retirement numbersmount. Operators will have to decide which is worse; passingon increased costs to customers or shortening hours and daysof operation as currently happens with some businesses inWhistler.
Another way to attract young people to this field is with abroadly-based apprenticeship program. Right now in BC it isonly possible to enter into apprenticeships in cooking, bak-ing, meat-cutting and some guiding jobs. There is an oppor-tunity to include bicycle mechanics, front-desk clerks, nightauditors, guides and instructors, and a host of other occupa-tions as well.
The tourism industry needs to be perceived as a viable ca-reer option with opportunities for advancement, careergrowth, and an opportunity to earn more than the minimumwage. Until that happens, young people are going to seetourism jobs as a stopgap while they work their way throughschool or look for better opportunities. A robust apprentice-ship program involving the government, Industry TrainingAuthority, and tourism/hospitality operators, coupled withwage increases, would allow for workers to build their ca-reers and provide a stable, motivated workforce.
If this fails to happen, we will see a dynamic industry fallshort of its potential and endless reports about labour short-ages.

Growing your list of contacts increases the likelihood you
will know someone at the company you are considering for a
job. Use LinkedIn’s InMail feature to reach out to these inside
connections directly. Or request an introduction through one
of your common contacts. A survey commissioned by iCIMS, a
provider of talent acquisition solutions, found that most can-
didates (91 percent) referred by a director level or above
were hired. Even a recommendation from an entry-level em-
ployee resulted in a hire half of the time. “LinkedIn is espe-
cially powerful for those launching a career,” says Robert.
“Even if it’s someone who knows your dad or your uncle,
LinkedIn allows you to discreetly ask them to recommend you
to the person who is doing the hiring.”
LinkedIn can also help alleviate some of the pressure to
perform at networking events and other social settings whereprofessional peers are in the mix. Rather than trying to show-case your qualifications in an otherwise casual conversation,offer to follow up on LinkedIn. Once you’re home, send apersonalized connection request to keep the conversationgoing. Leave the sales pitch to your profile and reserve facetime for making personal connections.
Check in occasionally with those new contacts to strength-en the relationship. Comment on a colleague’s update or jobanniversary. Offer to help with a project they’ve undertaken,or ask them for assistance. People like to help – especiallywith simple requests. Need advice on a certification programor how to tackle a particular piece of software? Before youconsult Google, ask a contact for his opinion. And don’t for-get your manners. “Type a personal thank you for connect-ing,” recommends Carla Deter, Founder of LinkedIn ProfileServices Professional. “It only takes seconds and it will go along way to being remembered.”
