THE ITALIAN ERTMS EXPERIENCE
UIC ERTMS Conference – Bern

RFI
RETE FERROVIARIA ITALIANA
ITALIAN INFRASTRUCTURE MANAGER
Main tasks:
1) To manage the railway network in accordance with national and Europeanrules
2) To ensure and assess railway safety at system level
3) To assess characteristics of the railwayundertakings
4) To propose and issue rules and regulationsfor railway operations
3 UIC ERTMS Conference – Bern September 2007
1. ETCS implementation: interoperability choices (GSM-R coverage of the HS and CR network, ETCS Level 2 on high-speed lines, SCMT as prefitted ETCS Level 1 on conventional main lines and nodes, rolling stock equipped accordingly)
2. First experience with ETCS Level 2 on the Rome-Naples high-speed line and Novara-Torino in commercial operation (solved and unsolved problems on both infrastructure and rolling stock) – Main lesson learnt – Certification and Assessment
3. Extension of SCMT towards ETCS Level 1 on corridors linking up with Europe (adding standard ETCS features to track-side SCMT: consequences for balise configuration, how to resolve the infill issue – the proposed radio infill solution)

Less environmental impact than road, equivalent to the discharge of a city with 220 thousand inhabitants (e.g. Perugia+Treviso) and consumption and emissions of a 102 MW power station (1.3% of Italy’s domestic power consumption).
