While academically non-selective, Uplands School has consistently achieved a very high percentage of its overall IGCSE examination results at or above a B-grade. The last five years has seen Uplands students achieve some of the best results in the School’s history with an average of 72% of all grades being of B-grade or above. In addition, our IGCSE/GCSE students consistently receive the Cambridge International “Brilliance” Awards (see the list of recent awards below).
The IB Diploma Programme is an academically challenging and balanced programme with final examinations that prepare students exceptionally well for success at university and life beyond. The programme has gained respect from the world’s leading universities.
It develops students physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically. Strong connections are made across academic disciplines which support additional requirements in areas of community service, higher-order recognition of learning and the production of an extended essay (4000 words) in a chosen subject.
Uplands students have achieved great success compared to world average scores in each year of the programme since its inception in 2001.

Learning SupportThe Learning Support Programme seeks to provide services to identified students that address their academic development. When needed, the Learning Support teacher provides in-class assistance to ensure that students have access to and understand concepts taught in English, Humanities, Science and Mathematics. Frequent collaboration occurs between the Learning Support teacher and classroom/subject teacher to ensure support is given and to share strategies to support the students’ learning. Classroom test and exam accommodations may be provided should students have specific learning needs identified by a qualified psychologist. The Learning Support teacher will liaise with outside professionals who provide speech-language therapy, physical therapy, and occupational therapy. It is the aim of the Learning Support Programme to make certain that students are getting the appropriate support and show continued success at Uplands. Currently, Uplands has the capacity to offer Learning Support services to students with mild learning difficulties.
Until the year 2000, the School offered only the British IGCSE and A-Level programmes, but in 2001, Uplands became accredited to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, followed in 2006 by authorisation to deliver the Primary Years Programme (PYP). Today Uplands offers elements of both the Cambridge and the IB programmes to its students.
In the Primary School, students from Reception to Year 6 follow the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) that focuses on the development of the whole child and offers a framework that meets children’s academic, social, physical, emotional and cultural needs. Uplands School was the first in Malaysia to offer this world-class programme.
In the Lower Secondary, (Years 7 to 9), students follow a broad base of studies involving a compulsory Core Curriculum of English Language and Literature (or English as a Second Language), Mathematics, Coordinated Sciences, Physical Education, Geography, History, Information Technology, Design Technology, Art, Music, Drama, Bahasa
Malaysia, and one other Modern Foreign Language (from Mandarin, German, French, Japanese and Spanish).
At Upper Secondary level (Years 10 and 11), students will prepare for public examinations, conducted in the School, but assessed in the United Kingdom, and in most cases leading to the Cambridge IGCSE qualifications. Most students prepare for eight to ten subjects with English, Mathematics, the Coordinated Sciences and Physical Education (for the top sets) being compulsory, and at least one of the Humanities (Geography, History, Economics), one of the Arts (Music, Drama, Visual Arts, Media Studies) and one of the Modern Foreign Languages. There is room in the curriculum for one more elective choice that may include Information Technology, DT Graphics, DT Resistant Materials, Geography and History. The subjects offered are reviewed each year according to demand by students.
All students entering the Pre-University Courses (Years 12 and 13) will study the IB Diploma. The IB Diploma, an intensive, two-year programme, requires students to
study a combination of six subjects, three at Higher Level and three at Standard level. Students all embrace the Core elements of the Programme, which consists of a Theory of Knowledge course, the writing for an Extended Essay (4,000 mini-thesis) and active involvement in the Creativity, Activity and Service Programme (CAS). All three elements offer a highly enriching and holistic approach to student education and are excellent preparation for University.
While the language of instruction is English, several foreign languages such as German, French, Spanish, Japanese, Mandarin and Bahasa Malaysia are offered, and there is a strong English as a Second Language (ESL) programme for those who require it in the lower Secondary section. There is a dedicated Learning Support Department and a qualified Student Counselor is on-hand to serve the School community.
Over 80% of our teachers are expatriates with wide international experience, recruited from over a dozen nations but with the majority UK-educated and trained.
Curriculum
A Conducive Learning Environment for Students
Uplands School aims to provide an international education for students of all nationalities in an academically challenging, multi-cultural environment. The School aims to be a cooperative international community, encouraged by the principles of mutual respect, within a framework of a secular education and an open exchange of rational ideas. The School encourages methods of teaching that foster the enjoyment of learning, discovery and enquiry, to create a community that promotes respect for truth, in preparation for a better future.
IntroductionThe International School of Penang (Uplands) was founded in 1955, in a colonial hotel on the top of Penang Hill, as a British preparatory boarding school for the children of expatriate families in Malaya. It was relocated to a historic, former catholic seminary site in Georgetown in 1976, and moved once again in September 2006 into purpose-built facilities in the heart of Batu Feringgi, the island’s beach resort.
Uplands School is a not-for-profit, multi-cultural, and multi-national community having its roots in historic Penang, a city with a unique blend of cultures and history of ethnic exchange. The School philosophy is that a community that promotes mutual and self-respect, and where care and cooperation are paramount, will automatically encourage
good human relations. In academic endeavour, the School practices methods of teaching which encourage a willingness to learn, discover and enquire; and that develop a wide range of human faculties – the intellectual, aesthetic, emotional and physical. In line with our philosophy we provide a wide variety of disciplines and activities, both within and outside the academic curriculum.
AccreditationsThe International School of Penang (Uplands) is an IB World School, also recognised by the Malaysian Ministry of Education and permitted to admit both foreign and local students. It is a member of the Boarding Schools Association (BSA), The Federation of British International Schools in Asia (FOBISIA), British International Schools Worldwide (BISW), and approvedto offer external examinations by TheInternational Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO), Cambridge International Examinations (CIE), and Edexcel International Examinations. The School received an award from the Malaysian Ministry of Education in June 2003, recognising it as one of the leading international schools in the nation. The School was previously twice accredited under its CIS (Council of International Schools) affiliation, as well as the British Schools Overseas scheme.
