The Flood: Sin Leads to Punishment
The Sons of God Married the Daughters of Men
• Sons of God – those with good morals, God-fearing and religious
• Daughters of men – those who gave priority to the desires of the flesh
• They began to intermarry (Gen. 6:1-2)– Chose on physical attractiveness over spiritual
strength (compare 1 Kings 11:1-3)– Hearts filled with wickedness and earth filled with
violence (6:5, 11)
Destruction Because of Sin
• God limited how long he would strive to turn man back to him (6:3)
• God will destroy the earth when he can no longer tolerate man’s sinfulness– Genesis 6:5-7– 2 Peter 3:8-10– He repented (turned from) his fellowship
with man because of his wickedness
God Saved Noah
• God saved Noah and his family (Gen. 6:8-9)– Just – lived in accord with God’s will– Perfect – upright, solely dedicated to God’s service– Walked with God – did all commanded to do
(6:22; 7:5)
• He heard God’s warning and set out to prepare an ark as God instructed (Heb. 11:7)
• Others refused to repent despite years of preaching (2 Pet. 2:5)
God’s Covenant with Noah
• God would protect Noah and his family (Gen. 6:18-21)
• Noah had to meet the conditions of the covenant to receive the reward (6:14-17; 7:2-3, 5)– God used the waters of the flood to save them
from the wicked world– They emerged in a world purified of all evil
• Just so, baptism saves us from the condemnation of sin (1 Pet. 3:20-21)
A Thanksgiving Sacrifice
• Flood lasted 1 year 10 days (Gen. 7:11; 8:14)• Noah’s first act on the renewed earth was to
offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving (8:20-22)– It could be viewed as dedicating the renewed
earth to God– It served as a reminder of man’s reliance on God
• God made further covenant with Noah (9:8-17)– Because he was pleased with Noah’s sacrifice,
God would never again destroy earth with water– Rainbow reminder of the covenant
