The First ThanksgivingFestivals with the spirit of
giving thanks have been commonin many cultures, so determiningthe original Thanksgivingcelebration proves difficult. Buttradition recognizes the 1621 feastbetween the Pilgrim settlers atPlymouth Colony andneighboring American Indians asAmerica’s first Thanksgiving.
Sailing from England aboardthe Mayflower, the Pilgrimsarrived in present-dayMassachusetts in the fall of 1620,yet remained on the ship forseveral months. When thecolonists moved ashore thefollowing spring, they were visitedby two English-speaking Indians,
Samoset and Squanto, whoshowed the Pilgrims how to huntand grow their own food. Squantoalso served as an interpreter andmediator between the settlers andthe neighboring Wampanoagtribe.
Sometime between Sept. 21and Nov. 1, the Pilgrimsorganized a feast to celebrate thesuccess of their first crop. Around90 Wampanoag, including ChiefMassasoit, joined the colonists forthe festivities, which lasted forthree days and included games, singing and dancing, in additionto the elaborate meal.
The Pilgrims’ records indicatethat regional fowl, such as ducks, geese, swans and, yes, probablyturkey, were served at the feast, along with venison brought by theWampanoag. Historians believethat other foods present at themeal included fish and shellfish, beans, onions, porridge madefrom cornmeal, berries, squashand pumpkin—but no pumpkinpie.

Drive.As I mentioned last month, I
will try to help you communicatewith people who are experiencingdementia.
I may oversimplify a lot ofthings, but like always, please feel
free to give me feedback if youneed me to clarify something.
Whenever you’re trying tocommunicate to a person who isexperiencing dementia, you haveto always be centered.
This means clearing yourself ofall inner “noise,” putting asideyour own feelings, quieting thethoughts that are running throughyour head, and finding your innerstrength and resourcefulness.
If you meditate, do yoga or dosome form of martial arts, thenthese words are familiar to you.You may already be trained incentering, and that is an extremelyimportant tool that you will needto use often.
Centering is what you do whenyou do not know what to do.Centering is the way to handleshocking, scary events. Centeringis the first step toward empathy.
Please feel free to see me; I canteach you how to center.
Howard, Kerwin and Sylvia.

Tips for A ThinnerThanksgiving!
Gaining weight during the holidayseason is a national pastime. Didyou know that most people gain
at least a pound during theholiday, some even gain more.Worst is most people keep that
weight on permanently. The good news is with a little
knowledge you can indulgeyourself in traditional holiday fareand still enjoy a guilt-freeThanksgiving feast. After all, beingstuffed is a good idea only if youare a turkey.
Get Active: Eat less and exercisemore during the holidays toprevent weight gain. Boost thefrequency of your fitness routinethe weeks ahead of the feast.
Take a walk early ThanksgivingDay and then again after dinner ifyou are up to it. It is a wonderfulway for families to get physicaland enjoy the holiday at thesame time.
Eat Breakfast: Eating a smallmeal in the morning may give youmore control over your hunger.
Start your day with a healthy
breakfast, preferably one withprotein and fiber which may helptake the edge off your cravingsand allow you to be more sensiblelater in the day during the“big feast.”
Watch your Portions: Beforefilling up your plate, evaluate thebuffet table and decide whatyou’re going to choose.
Don’t squander your calorieson foods that you can have allyear long. Indulge with smallportions of holiday favorites soyou can enjoy your traditionalfavorites
Best Bets on the Table: Whiteturkey meat, plain vegetables, roasted sweet potatoes, mashedpotatoes and de-fatted gravy tendto be the best bets because theyare lower in fat and calories.
Skip the Seconds andLeftovers: Try to resist thetemptation to go back for secondhelpings or leftovers. You are lesslikely to overeat and have moreroom for a delectable dessert. Butonly one slice of that pumpkinpie!!!
