Whatever happened to sin?
This is a question that has been popping up in some of the conversations I’ve had recently. I introduced the thought in the sermon yesterday about how Jesus and God view anger. In God’s eyes harbored/un-dealt with anger is comparable to murder, a breaking of the 6th Commandment. In other-words harbored anger is sin. What might it be like if, through God’s eyes, we viewed our actions, thoughts, words and life? I have been pondering these things as we go through the Ten Commandments. I wonder if we might have taken the seven deadly sins and redefined them today as something a lot milder than what they truly are, sin. Do you remember the phrase “The Seven Deadly Sins?” Maybe you have never heard them as they are not used in the church very much today. The Seven Deadly Sins, also known as the Capital Vices or Cardinal Sins are a list of vises that have been used since early Christian times to educate and instruct Christians concerning fallen humanity's tendency to sin. I thought it might be good for us to see them listed as we will be touching upon a few of them as we continue our journey through the Ten Commandments. Here’s the list: Pride is excessive belief in one's own abilities which interferes with the individual's recognition of the grace of God. It has been called the sin from which all others arise. Pride is also known as Vanity. Envy is the desire for others' traits, status, abilities, or situation.
Gluttony is an excessive desire to consume more than that which one requires. Lust is an excessive craving for the pleasures of the body. Anger is manifested in the individual who spurns love and opts instead for fury. It is also known as Wrath. Greed is the desire for material wealth or gain, ignoring the realm of the spiritual. It is also called Avarice or Covetousness. Slothfulness is the avoidance of physical or spiritual work. One author wrote, “The Seven Deadly Sins are transgressions which are fatal to spiritual progress.” They do not keep us out of heaven but they do stunt our spiritual growth in the Lord. Thoughts to ponder. In much love, Pastor Darrel

Chapter 10. Prayers for Vi Davin, Donald Thomas, Opal Meyers, Lloyd Sumner, June Mowat & Bill
& Lola Thornton requested. Ruth closed with prayer.
SOS CLASS: Gary Benjamin opened the class with prayer. They had 16 daily readers and 22 with bibles. Gary Benjamin presented the lesson on Hannah, a woman who believed in prayer. A special
guest from AZ, Norma Hayden was welcomed. Prayers for all those in way of Colorado forest fire including Julie & Stu Burness (sister and brother-in-law of Nancy Horn) were requested. The class
closed with the Lord’s Prayer.
GREAT EXPECTATIONS CLASS: What a warm and busy weekend we have enjoyed! So many
of our Great Expectations Class had numerous events going on but somehow some of them pulled it off and came out to “Mike Burns Lake” on Sunday for a fun time of canoeing, swimming, jumping
from a rope (scary), paddle boating to throwing in a fishing line (Pastor) to just sitting around in
the shade visiting and eating all the great food that was brought. The Great Expectations Class would like to say thank you to Pastor Darrel and Michal and Dennis Eilenstine and his friend Denise
from the Pastor’s Class for coming out and sharing the afternoon with us. We would like to also say thank you to Ashley Roberts and Peyton and to Alyssa the granddaughter of Les and Lennet.
We will begin our new study next Sunday, “30 Life Principles” by Charles F. Stanley. Charles Stanley lays out 30 life principles that can help you become more like Christ every day. This is
accomplished through the power of His Holy Spirit, and through your own diligence and discipline.
You will learn: "God's Word is an immovable anchor in times of storm," "fight all your battles on your knees and you will win every time," "God acts on behalf of those who wait for Him," and much
more. By practicing these 30 Life Principles, you will be cooperating fully with the Spirit of God, and your life will grow into the likeness of Christ.
If you are looking for a Sunday School Class, we wish to extend a warm invitation for you
to come and join us. Our class is located on the east end of the Fellowship Hall.
PASTOR’S CLASS: Last week we said we would be learning what would happen if we heard the teachings of Jesus and didn't obey. The answers are pretty sobering. If we learn and don't obey, it
is like building our house on sand and our foundation crumbles in the first storm (of life). But if we hear and obey, our foundation is built on rock which will withstand the storms of life. This is
something we need to search our hearts about. Are we really obeying God's Word or just listening
or reading and going away without changing? Next week join us as we learn about what a disciple is and what Jesus meant when He said, "Go and make disciples" Matt. 28:19. We meet in the
Annex - all ages welcome!

FCC HAS BEEN THANKED…
What a wonderful church service and Father’s Day. I grew up in church, my children also
went to church. I liked helping in the church. As I grew older I enjoyed helping in the
sewing group and Women’s Council. I like being part of God’s work. The good Lord has
blessed me with a whole family group treating me like I was a part of their family. I love
them the same. I am glad to belong to the First Christian Church in Garnett, KS. Thank
you Darrel for all your help. I can be happy wherever I am with God by my side – and in
my heart. God Bless each one, Sincerely June Mowat
Thanking all who sent prayers for my son Mike Thomas. The Lord was with him all the way!
He is now back to work and doing fine. Sherrie Brown

ONE NATION UNDER GOD
By Roger Robicheau One Nation Under God we live - Think about all some had to give
We the people share freedom’s life - In a world of ever present strife
Be grateful to those who keep this true - Warriors of our red, white, and blue
They're trained by those of great skill - Honed to perform, so strong their will
They show what love is all about - They’ll fight for us, there is no doubt
Defending bravely what we are - No holding back each heartfelt star

In the spotlight this week is our current Elders Chairman, Gary Benjamin.
Gary and his wife, Linda, live at 315 North Orange in Garnett. They have
one son, Stan, and daughter in law, Walla, who live in Newton, Ks. They
are the proud grandparents of 2 grandsons, Bruce, who loves football
which keeps his grandparents traveling to and from games and Brandon
whose interest goes from the famous Lightning McQueen to trains.
Gary’s hobbies consist of fishing with his family and friends when he can,
golfing, especially in AZ, camping…especially with his church friends and
he does beautiful stained glass.
Gary’s favorite quote is “suck it up whiney pants” which he shares
frequently with his camping friends.
Gary’s favorite scripture from the bible is Matthew 11:28-30
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give
you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle
and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is
easy and my burden is light."(NIV)
Gary became an interim pastor at FCC in June of 1989 and then full time
Pastor from Dec 30, 1989 thru 2006 and filled the roll of interim pastor from
Nov 2010 thru May 2011.
Gary and his wife Linda are such positive & faithful role models to our
church and church families. Gary was and still is actively involved in
almost everything that takes place here at FCC…from weddings to
funerals, counseling to baptisms, Wednesday after school children time
activity to being a part of the Hee Haw gang at a talent show! If there
was an opportunity to be involved, he was there. Gary would like to see
continued opportunities for members at FCC to be actively involved.

APPRECIATION OF OUR TEACHERS!
I just wanted to let all our Sunday School teachers and helpers know how much we appreciate you and your help! Summer is sometimes
difficult to keep students in consistent attendance because of their really challenging schedules. Thankfully fall is coming! Stay strong
and please let me know if there is any way I can be helpful to you! I
also want to encourage each of us teachers to attempt making connection with our students through out the summer. A simple note, text, phone call, or personal word from a teacher is a great blessing
to our students and can really encourage them in life as well. Please do your best to extend your influence to encourage your class this summer. Again, I am so proud to be in partnership with each of
you! May God Bless you and your efforts for the kingdom! Thanks Chris!
PROMOTION SUNDAY
Our Sunday School classes have promoted!!! July 1st will be the first time they have been in their new class. If you have questions as to
where your new class is, or perhaps you don’t know people in your new class, please ask Chris, Stacy Gwin, or even your old teacher to
introduce you to your new class. We want Sunday School to serve you and help you grow in your knowledge and relationship with Jesus.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask! Thanks and we can’t wait to see you on
Sunday! Chris
