Report Meeting 13 July, 2017 ActingSergeantChrisColeintroducedPresidentAndrewPratt(resplendentinhisofficialchains),whoannouncedthattoday’stoastwouldbeanotherratherunusualoneafterwehadtoastedJuliaGillardlastweek,andnominatedTonyAbbottwhichstimulatedanoutcryofribaldryandmirthandwhichdidindeedturnouttohavebeenajoke.Therealtoastwasscarcelylessstartling,however,totheSaudiGovernmentforallowingfemalecitizenstoattendphysicaleducationclasseswithoutmalechaperones,therebyfinallyenteringthe12thcentury.GuestswereourspeakerRodTaber,andinducteesJackHobbsandRalphMorris.KristynBarkerannouncedthatpublicspeakingcandidateswerebeingsoughtatO’ConnorSchoolwithseveralgoodprospectsalreadyidentified,andthatvolunteerstoassistwithtrainingwillberequested.OurNYSFcandidateSamFrazierisalreadyintraining,whichisproceedingwell.Lorenz,ourAustrianexchangestudent(nearly16yearsold)arrivesshortly,stayinginitiallywithKristynandBen.KristynalsodrewourattentiontothenewCentraltarianformat,whichallowseasylinkstowebsites,andwhichreceivedfavourablefeedback.TreasurerGraemeAndrewsremindedusthatannualduesof$250werenowpayable.DirectdebittoBSB932000A/C706331ispossible,withtheprovisothatifpaymentisbeingmadefromaCreditUnion,thedigitsS9neededtobeaddedtotheaccountnumber.Ifthatallseemedabitonthehardside,cashandchequesarealsoacceptable.RosemaryRichardsremindedusabouttheChristmasinJulybarbecuelunchbeingputonatAscentnextTuesday,andasheetwascirculatedforattendance.ThelunchistothankthisClubfortheassistancegiventoAscentthroughthepastyear.ChrisColeadvisedthatfourmembershadattendedtheworkingbeetospreadmulcharoundtheClub’sbirchtreesnearthenorthernroundabout,andforeshadowedthateveryoneelsewhohadignoredtheworkingbeewouldbefined.PresidentAndrewwelcomedbackourtravellingmembersDavidGeeandDavidSteller,whohavebeenglobe-trotting(separately).HecirculatedavolunteersheetforworkingattherugbygatesthiscomingSaturdaywhenotherwiseJohnJoneswouldbedoingitallhimself,andreceivedseveralnames.HealsoremindedusaboutMealsonWheelsnextWednesday,forwhichTerryInmanalreadyhasalistofnames.PresidentAndrewtheninductedourtwonewmembers,JackHobbsproposedbySimonMacmillan,andformerQueenslandRotarianRalphMorrisintroducedbyAndrewhimself.IndrawingattentiontotheRotaryfour-waytest,headmittedthat‘IsittheTruth?’wasnotfollowedmorethan99%ofthetimebecauseattheBookShedBSrules,exemplifyingthecamaraderieandfellowshipinherentinmembershipofourClub.Healsoemphasisedservicetothecommunity,andinternationalgoodwill,understandingandpeace,asbeingcentraltenetsofRotary,inadditiontosocialpleasures.Ournewmemberswerereceivedwithacclamation.OurspeakerRodTaberaddressedusonaprojectundertakeninVanuatubytheSolarEnergyIndustryAssociation,toprovidesolarpowertoschoolsfollowingthedevastationwroughtbyCyclonePam(thebiggestcycloneeverrecordedanywhere,withwindgustsreaching400kph).Theprojectinitiallytargetedtheremote,ruggedislandofTongala,whichhadbeendirectlybeneaththecyclone’strack,thoughhappilywithoutfatalities.However,mostbuildingshadbeenunroofedordestroyed,includingschoolbuildingsconstructedtonormalcyclonestandards.Threeschoolsweretargetedinthefirstphaseoftheproject,allbeingprovidedwith240vpowerfromeightsolarpanelseach,allequipmentbeingdonatedbycompaniesinAustralia.Rodpaidparticulartributetotwowomen,aNewZealanderwhoprovidedboattransportfromPortVilatoTongaladespitedeterioratingweather,andaGerman-bornseniormemberofhisAssociationwhoundertooka

….ReportJuly13Continuedpowerfulleadershiprole.Thenextphaseoftheproject,forwhichfundsarepresentlybeingraised(afurther$11,000needed),istoprovidesolarpowertoalarger,boardingschool,onAmbaiIsland,wheredieselgeneratorsarenowusedbutonlyforafewhourseachdaybecauseoftheexpenseoffuel.Panelshavealreadybeenerectedonsteelframes,andequipmentdonatedinMelbournehasbeeninstalled.Afurtherprojectistorebuildonanexistingslababesser-blockclassroomwhichwastotallyrippedapartinthecyclone.RodwasthankedforhisfascinatingandinformativeaddressbyDougJackson.DavidGeewonthewineinHeads-and-Tails,whichwasfollowedbyasurprisepresentationofabookrecentlyreceivedatthebookshedtotreasurerGraemeAndrews–acashbook,completelyemptyandunused.ThispromptedarecollectionbyGraemeofabookhehadonceseeninabrothelinKalgoorlie(don’task!)titled‘WhatMenThinkAboutOtherthanSex’whichwassimilarlyentirelyempty.

CHRISTMAS IN JULY AT ASCENT Last Tuesday, 18 July, a great celebration BBQ for Christmas in July was held at ASCENT. Armidale Central has a big involvement with ASCENT at a variety of levels. We have provided sup-ort through funding and support in kind through assistance with the conduct of workers’ meetings. We also have a heavy involvement with the recycling of books surplus to requirements for the Book Fair.
