Honor Code
In keeping with the principles of the BYU Honor Code, students are expected to be honest in all of
their academic work. Academic Honesty means, most fundamentally, that any work you present as
your own must in fact be your own work and not that of another. Violations of this principle may
result in a failing grade in the course and additional disciplinary action by the university. Students
are also expected to adhere to the Dress and Grooming Standards. Adherence demonstrates respect
for yourself and others and ensures an effective learning and working environment. It is the
university’s expectation, and every instructor’s expectation in class, that each student will abide by all
Honor Code standards. It is the student’s responsibility to read and adhere to the University’s Honor

Preventing Sexual Misconduct
In accordance with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Brigham Young University prohibits
unlawful sex discrimination (including Sexual Misconduct) against any participant in its education
programs or activities. The university also prohibits sexual harassment – including sexual violence –
committed by or against students, university employees, and visitors to campus. As outlined in
university policy, sexual harassment, dating violence, domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking

WELCOME Dear Cougar Marching Band Member,
Welcome to the 2020 Cougar Marching Band! We have a fine tradition of excellence and are
excited that you will be part of it. As we begin our season with Band Camp, we look forward to
another great and successful year, as well as getting to know you. The success of our group rests
upon each of you and your approach to each rehearsal and performance. Attitude is the most
important factor in this success. Enthusiasm for the group should be inherent and displayed in
everything you do. This is illustrated and magnified by each member’s support. A good attitude may
be expressed in the following ways:
● Enthusiasm! ● Dependability! Being on time to all rehearsals and performances. ● Engagement! Being responsive, attentive, quiet, and FOCUSED during rehearsal. ● Preparation! Music memorization, charts in hand, pencil, etc. ● Respect! Supporting the Directors and Band Staff. (If there is a problem, come see a
director)
● Cooperation! Working with Drum Majors, Section Leaders, and Squad Leaders even if you personally disagree.
Many times, a misunderstanding or ignorance of rules and regulations causes unpleasantness on the
part of the student and/or the Band Directors. Given the complexity of human behavior, no
publication of this nature can completely address all situations. Thus, the Band Directors reserve the
right and responsibility to address any student behaviors or unique situations which impact the BYU
Band and/or Brigham Young University. This handbook has been carefully assembled to give you the
information you will need for a successful season. Each item is of great importance, and we
encourage you to study and review it often as an easy-access reference guide.

LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES
Due to the size and success of the BYU Cougar Marching Band, we all depend heavily on student
leadership and involvement to maintain a tradition of excellence and continued improvement. The
Band Leadership Committee is the organization designed to meet the expansive needs of the Cougar
Marching Band and provide students with an opportunity for personal growth through serving one
another and the band program. The many individuals serving in the “BLC” invest a considerable
amount of time and effort prior to and during the regular season to help ensure the success of the
band and yourself.
The Band Leadership Committee consists of a President and Vice Presidents. Each of the Vice
Presidents is responsible for a specific area pertaining to band organization. The Vice Presidents
serve together with a group of committee members to accomplish their assigned tasks. These
committees are often in need of additional help throughout the season. Every member of the band
can have an opportunity to serve and to contribute through the BLC. If you have a desire to do so,
talk to the President or a Vice President of a given area in which you are interested. They can inform
you of upcoming service opportunities.
President - This key position provides leadership and direction for the entire BLC. Providing vision, inspiration, and service to the BLC and band is an essential responsibility. As one of the senior-most
members of the band with previous leadership experience, the President is the key leader between
the BLC Vice Presidents and the directors. He or she bears ultimate responsibility for all of the duties
of the Vice Presidents and their committees.
Drum Majors – The Cougar Marching Band uses three drum majors. Auditions are held at the end of fall semester each year. All three positions are “open” each year to ALL candidates who wish to
audition. It is the DMs’ responsibility to maintain discipline and order on the field. They must have a
thorough understanding of the music and drill for each show and be able to assist in teaching on the
field. The DMs work with the directors in leading rehearsals and performances. They also assume
responsibility for teaching marching fundamentals and other basic principles necessary for quality
rehearsals and performances.

Color Guard Captain and Co-Captains – These students audition at the end of winter semester each year and are selected based on a creative and skilled audition. They must have superb marching,
flag work, dancing, and choreography skills. They work closely with the Color Guard Director in
teaching and writing routines as well as executing sectional warm-ups and rehearsals. They have the
essential responsibility of establishing and maintaining high performance standards and esprit de
corps within the Color Guard.
Section Leaders - These students are chosen based on proven leadership as well as excellence in marching and musical performance. Their responsibilities include warming-up and rehearsing the
section and teaching proper performance fundamentals. Section leaders assist the drum majors in
maintaining rehearsal discipline and establishing high standards of performance and esprit de corps
within their section. They also oversee the squad leaders in conducting music pass-offs, perfecting
marching fundamentals, and addressing any necessary disciplinary actions.
Squad Leaders - Within each section, appointed leaders oversee organized squads of 4 or more people. Squad leaders assist the section leader in rehearsing and passing-off music. They also play a
key role in learning drill sets and establishing a positive work ethic and performance standard.
Squad leaders are chosen by the director and section leader based on experience and skill.
Vice President: Uniforms - Fitting 225+ people into band uniforms is no small task! This committee oversees uniform fittings and organization during band camp. They also help establish and enforce
uniform care policies, assess misuse fines, and aid in the general uniform maintenance. They are the
band members’ resource for solving any uniform problems that may arise.
Vice President: Student Representative - The Vice President and members of this committee are nominated by the band at the band banquet the preceding fall semester or during band camp.
Awareness of the needs and feelings of the band, communication to the directors, and the
establishment of a positive “family” environment are the primary roles of this committee. They
organize socials, foster spirit in the stands, and help to develop a positive image for the band.

Vice President: Logistics - The number of instruments, equipment, and facilities required for a successful band can be staggering. This committee fills the very difficult role of overseeing all the
loading, unloading, organization, and care of instruments and equipment at large. Driving the
equipment truck, maintaining storage facilities, and overseeing set up of seat covers and podiums in
the stands are among their responsibilities.
Vice President: COVID-19 Safety - Due to the cancellation of the 2020 Rocky Mountain Marching Band Invitational because of COVID-19, the Rocky Mountain committee has been reassigned as the
COVID-19 Safety committee. This committee will oversee that both Cougar Band and University
COVID safety measures are being followed and make recommendations to the director of changes
that will keep all members and staff safe.
Vice President: Social Media - We live in an age where social media and the internet are primary ways of communicating. Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, the band webpage, email, and other uses of
electronic devices are the new and modern recordkeeping and publicity platforms for the band
program. As such, the responsibility of this Vice President and committee has expanded to providing
current and up-to-date information of the band’s activity by constantly maintaining the band’s social
media presence. A member of this committee is appointed to record notes of meetings and to
maintain a history of the band’s activities for the current season. This committee is also involved in
producing and distributing regular band newsletters.
The following pages identify the students serving in the aforementioned leadership positions. Become
acquainted with who they are, how they can assist you, and especially how you can support and help
them. The success and continued improvement of the Cougar Marching Band depends on a spirit and
attitude of service and giving. It is our hope that all members of the band will find opportunities to
help and serve. Giving of ourselves is a key to finding joy and peace in life. Being a part of the
Cougar Marching Band is a wonderful opportunity for personal growth and satisfaction. Improving
and sharing your musical gifts as well as developing life-long friendships will bring great blessings
into your life. We invite you to contribute your very best in all that you do. You will surely have a
very rewarding experience!

Cougar Marching Band social media accounts.

COMMUNICATION
The Cougar Marching Band is a large organization, and inevitable changes in itineraries and
plans will come during the season. We always strive to inform you of such changes in
advance. For this reason, we announce changes using a variety of methods: Learning Suite,
Slack, Facebook, rehearsal announcements, and email. You are expected to check your email
frequently for announcements and updates.

SOCIAL MEDIA POLICY
Announcements, Emails, and Slack
Any communication from the Cougar Marching Band Faculty or Staff to band members is
private information. These communications should not be forwarded to message boards, other
individuals or groups, pages, or the media. Any band communication intended for public
release will be clearly stated and sent officially from the BYU Band Office.
Media Interview
Cougar Marching Band members will NOT grant interviews with news media (print, radio,
television, or internet) without direct permission from the Marching Band Director. If you are
approached for an interview, simply direct the media source to the Marching Band Director.
Message Boards, Facebook, and other Social Media, Internet, etc.
Due to copyright restrictions, Cougar Marching Band members will neither post nor allow
others to post music, images, or videos containing copyrighted material to the internet, nor
share those files with others.
Cougar Marching Band members will neither post nor allow others to post images or
descriptions of themselves engaging in any behavior that may reflect a negative image on the
band program or the university. Members should only post band-related content. Posts should not be used for any school, research/surveys, promotional, or other purposes outside of band.
Band members, leaders, and staff are also expected to remain positive and appropriate in
their comments and/or posts on message boards or social media sites. Remember, we all
represent Brigham Young University and BYU Bands through our online behavior. Each of us
plays a part in maintaining a classy and professional presence both on and offline.

FACEBOOK GROUPS POLICY Facebook Groups
Facebook Pages are created with the purpose of establishing a public presence. Facebook
Groups are designed for quick communications between specified band members. The only
public Facebook page affiliated with the Cougar Marching Band is the official BYU Cougar
Marching Band page. Do not create new pages, even for individual sections. Sections may
create a separate Facebook Group with the following guidelines:
● Brother McInnis must be a member and admin of these groups. ● Privacy must be set to “Secret” so that only invited members may see group contents. ● Only current section members should be invited to join. (NO alumni, friends, parents, or
others)
● Brother McInnis must be notified which section member is the creator and/or administrator for their section’s Facebook Group if the section leader is not.
● Members should not create accounts for their sections on any other social media platform (YouTube/Google+, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Snapchat, or any other
online properties) without receiving direct permission from Brother McInnis.
● Members should only post band-related content. Posts should not be used for any school, research/survey, promotional, or other purposes outside of band. Admins
should monitor posts and delete anything that does not fall within these guidelines.
● Members will adhere to all other standards as listed in the BYU Bands Social Media Policy.
As previously stated, we all represent Brigham Young University and BYU Bands through our
online behavior. Each of us plays a part in maintaining a classy and professional presence for
the band, both on and offline.

SLACK MESSAGING POLICY
One of the primary ways that the Cougar Band Staff and BLC will communicate with
the band is through the mobile app called Slack. Slack is a platform designed to
facilitate organized communication within large groups. In Cougar Band, we use Slack
specifically for general announcements and time-sensitive updates. For this reason, we
ask that you keep Slack notifications activated on your mobile device. You will receive
information about how to add yourself to Cougar Band Slack channels shortly before
the beginning of Band Camp.
Due to limited storage space within the app, Slack will primarily be used by band
leadership to send out information concerning the following areas:
- Game day performance schedules
- Away games
- Updates for COVID-19 safety protocols
- ROC Band auditions
- Homecoming Devotional
- Bowl Games
- Real-time announcements during events and performances
Only band staff and select members of the BLC are authorized to post on Slack
channels. Personal communications with Brother McInnis, Brother Werner, Karren
Williamson, Matt Coleman, or Ashlee Taylor should be limited to email. Personal
communications with BLC members and section leaders should NOT go through Slack.
The band Facebook page and section Facebook Groups will be the primary platforms
for personal announcements, individual questions, and appropriate memes.

2020 SCHOLARSHIP POLICY The recipient of a marching band tuition assistance award is expected to fulfill each of the
requirements of the university and BYU Bands.
1. Successful participation in the BYU Cougar Marching Band during the fall semester.
This includes:
a. Participation in the pre-season leadership training (BLC and section/squad
leaders only).
b. Music memorization
c. Attendance at all regularly scheduled rehearsals and performances.
d. Properly representing the band and the university through exemplary conduct
and performance.
e. Participation in a probable postseason bowl game (although the costs of bowl
game participation will be covered by the bowl bid, this performance likely
involves student time between December 11th and January 3rd).
2. Registration for and completion of at least twelve (12) credit hours for undergraduates and
8.5 credit hours for graduate students during fall semester, including Marching Band
(Music 323R). Some exceptions may be approved. If you are unable to meet the credit
hour requirement, you must notify the Band Office (E-485 HFAC) prior to September 8th
to be considered for an exception.
3. A satisfactory academic level is expected. Therefore, a minimum GPA of 2.0 is required.
Students participating in marching band who are on academic warning or probation have
until the end of fall semester to rectify their academic status by earning a cumulative GPA
of at least 2.0.
4. If your scholarship award was increased due to participation in an auditioned concert band
(Wind Symphony or Symphonic Band), it is expected that you will participate in the
auditioned ensemble for BOTH fall and winter semesters. One half of the scholarship will
be awarded during the winter semester provided you are still enrolled in either Wind
Symphony or Symphonic Band.
5. Fulfill any additional responsibilities of leadership as required for your position.
A copy of the above was signed by each member of the Cougar Marching Band before Band
Camp began, stating that you understand and agree to comply with the requirements of
membership in the BYU Cougar Marching Band. The agreement is kept on file.

REHEARSAL INFORMATION
Rehearsals will begin promptly at 4:10 p.m. and end at 6:00 p.m. Rehearsals are held in the
West Stadium Parking lot on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. The Drumline will meet early for
rehearsals on Fridays at 3:00 p.m. Color Guard will meet early or rehearsals on Tuesdays
and Thursdays at 3:00 p.m. Members of those sections should be aware of any variations in
the standard rehearsal schedule.
One game days, call-time for rehearsals and inspection generally begins 2-3 hours before
kick-off time. Call-time is defined as being present and prepared. With the advent of
COVID-19, we will announce exact times as game day approaches. NEVER assume rehearsal is cancelled because of bad weather. Always show up and receive further instructions. In
extreme cases, the band may move to the Cougar Band Hall.

COVID-19 SAFETY PROTOCOLS Rehearsal/Class Time
Rehearsal/Class time includes sections meeting each other, receiving supplies for band and music
parts for the season, official band portraits taken, orientation, and regular rehearsals.

Distancing
- All students (woodwinds, brass, color guard and drumline) will be spaced 6 feet apart
during drill and music rehearsals in West Stadium Parking Lot and Edwards Stadium
stands.
- Students separated into smaller groups by instrument will maintain distance of 6 feet
apart from each other when in the group.
- No instruments/flags/additional equipment will be shared between students.
- Orientation (1st day of class) held in Edwards Stadium west stands with directors using sound system to address the class and students spaced 6 feet apart using COVID-19
protocols.
o Students will receive all equipment (instruments, practice flags, performance flags,
and poms) at this time.
- Band will be divided into 2 groups (White Band and Blue Band) for rehearsals and
halftime performances: Each group will rehearse separately (White Band will rehearse
marching on west stadium parking lot while Blue Band will rehearse music in Edwards
stadium west stands and vice versa) for halftime performance preparation.
o Class time will be split into two 50-minute blocks to accommodate separate
rehearsals
o A 10-minute transition period will be given at the end of the first 50-minute block
to switch group locations from the west stadium parking lot to Edwards Stadium
west stands and vice versa

the bleachers in designated pick-up/drop-off area.
o Drumline members will stage in designated area while they wait for their
instrument to be dropped off/picked up. Once an individual has picked
up/dropped off their instrument, they will vacate the area as soon as possible.
o Cases are to stay in lockers or in the drum and tuba storage room.
o Drumline members bring their own mallets or sticks.
o Upon completion of rehearsal, individual drumline/tuba players will follow
COVID-19 protocols in returning their instruments.
- Every student assigned a spot along the perimeter of the rehearsal field at 6-foot
intervals to store personal belongings and for water breaks.
- Restrooms in the South End Zone of stadium will be available to students. Students will

Sanitation

performances/game days.

CELL PHONE POLICY All band members are expected to be focused and engaged during rehearsals and
performances. Except in the case of emergencies, cell phone use during rehearsals
must be limited to authorized break time. In all other instances, students must refrain
from using cell phones during playing and marching rehearsals in locations including
but not limited to the west stadium parking lot, the Cougar Marching Band Hall, the
Gerrit de Jong Concert Hall, the Marriott Center, Helaman Field, and LaVell Edwards
Stadium.
On game days, students are absolutely prohibited from using cell phones while on the
field, in a concert arc, while playing in the stands, or in parade formation. Cell phones
may be used in the stands WITH DISCRETION, but they must not become a distraction.
Staff and BLC members withhold the right to revoke a student’s cell phone use if it
becomes apparent that it is interfering with performance by distracting that student
from watching the game, following instructions, or being prepared to play.

STAND PERFORMANCE & CONDUCT
When in a band and/or color guard uniform, please remember that you represent the
University and BYU Bands. Conduct and performance should be representative of those
organizations. Although there is no intention to have so many rules as to preclude enjoying
yourself at the games, as a member of the organization you should realize that a higher level
of performance and behavior is expected. You will be evaluated on stand conduct along with
rehearsal and performance effort, attitude, and so forth. Have fun and be energetic, but be
mature. When your uniform goes on, you become a highly visible representative of a top BYU
organization – the Cougar Marching Band. When we’re together as a group, we have a
powerful impact on the crowd when the team needs it the most. Be attentive and concentrate
so we can start and stop together and continue the tradition of quality and class that we have
worked so hard to establish.
General Stand Performance Procedures
OUR JOB IS TO PLAY MUSIC. AS SUCH, PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT AND WHEN TO
PLAY.
- Be prepared to play as soon as each play on the field finishes. During a play, the
drum majors will post the number of a stand cheer and a stand tune on the LED board
above the center podium. The center drum major will point to which of the tunes we
will play. It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to have the music ready to pull up and play at
the drop of a hat.
- During time outs or at the end of plays on the field, the drum majors will give one short
whistle. This signals to the band that they are about to count off the tune.
- The center drum major will give the drumline two beats of prep. The drum line will
follow with 4 taps, and the band will play the tune. There will not be a whistle
count-off.
- Watch attentively for the cut-off. Playing past the start of the next play on the field
can result in a team penalty.
- Certain tunes will be signaled with a hand sign. These tunes must be memorized!

o Bridge of Khazad-Dum (you shall not pass)

Reminders:
● Invest your positive energy cheering FOR our team and NOT against the opponent or referees
● Do not throw anything onto the field or into the stands ● Uniforms are to be worn properly. Polos will not be tucked into pants and flipfolders will
be fastened with two carabiners to belt loops on the right side. Only the 2020 BYU Band
baseball cap or the BYU Band ski cap may be worn on your head.
● ONLY band members may sit in the band section ● Music will be secured in lyres and flip-folders for proper performance. This will allow
visual contact with directors and prevent lost or damaged music
● Watch drum majors or director for announcement of the next number that will be performed
● CMB members may leave the stands to use the restrooms. Come straight back to the stands after using the restrooms. Do not plan to meet up with family or friends outside the
bathrooms or anywhere else in the stadium.
● A pre-game meal and post-halftime snack are provided to band members. As such, you are not permitted to purchase or eat food from the concession stands. Do not buy any
food or have anyone else bring you purchased concessions.
● Although volume is important, improvising or overplaying is NOT appropriate ● If your section would like to perform a special cheer or number, please clear that with the
director or drum majors
● NCAA rules allow us to play at very specific times during the game. Be ready, patient, and become familiar with the flow of the game and when we play. Starts and stops must
be crisp, clean, and together
● We provide post-halftime treats. People use good judgment and discretion in eating and drinking during games. DO NOT allow these to become a distraction to being ready to
play and cheer in a timely manner. This is a privilege we would like to continue.
● If you have your cell phone, put it away while you are playing

GRADING POLICY
ATTENDANCE
All members must be registered for Marching Band (Music 323R). Audits are not accepted.
Grades are calculated using the criteria and approximate percentages listed below:
Attendance - approx. 50% of final grade
The major grading criterion is attendance – because it plays such a major part in the
successful rehearsal and performance of the Cougar Band. On-time attendance at all
rehearsals is expected and on-time attendance at all performances is mandatory. ONE
UNEXCUSED PERFORMANCE ABSENCE (including bowl game appearances) WILL BE
GROUNDS FOR FAILING THE COURSE.
On rare occasions, individuals may have a valid reason for being late or absent. In such
instances, permission may be granted by the directors. Exemptions from performances are not
usually granted, unless it is for extreme circumstances. All requests for such permission must be
submitted in advance by submitting an Absence/Tardy Request form. Such requests for
rehearsals must be submitted at least two rehearsals in advance. For performances, the request must be submitted at least two weeks in advance. Submission of the Absence/Tardy Request form does NOT mean or imply approval. Approval is left to the directors’ discretion.
Class conflicts (before or after rehearsal) must be approved by the directors and reported to
the section leader at the beginning of the semester.
If an emergency or sudden illness leads to a last-minute request, the directors should be contacted
immediately.
We take roll at the beginning of each rehearsal and performance. You are expected to
arrive on time and to be at all rehearsals and performances. To be marked present, you must
have your barcode scanned by a section leader and have all necessary and/or expected
materials (instrument, proper shoes, music, pencil, drill charts/coordinate sheets, etc.) when
rehearsal begins.
If you arrive tardy to a rehearsal or performance, you must still have your barcode scanned
by a section leader. Failure to do so will result in a recorded unexcused absence. Tardies
exceeding 20 minutes are not eligible for make-up. There will be NO opportunities to

makeup unexcused rehearsal absences. If you miss the bus for an away game, it is YOUR
RESPONSIBILITY to arrange transportation to or from the game.
In summary, the following actions will impact your grade for attendance:
● Leaving rehearsal early (30 minutes or less remaining) without a director’s permission will result in a tardy
● Leaving rehearsal early (30 minutes or more remaining) without a director’s permission will result in an unexcused absence
● Not attending or leaving a performance early without a director’s permission can result in failing the course
Service opportunities to excuse tardies are available at various times during the season. Each
student may use service opportunities to excuse up to three rehearsal tardies and no more
than one performance tardy for the semester.
In order to receive credit, you must have your barcode scanned by a section leader or BLC
member. These service opportunities (generally three) will occur during these specific weeks of the season: TBA. Students accruing tardies MUST use the service opportunity in the time period
during which the tardy occurred in order to have the tardy excused, thus allowing for only one
excused tardy every 1/3 of the season.
Service opportunities to excuse tardies may raise the overall grade by a maximum of ½
letter grade (ex. B+ to A-)
All members are required to attend a bowl game with the band if we receive a bowl
invitation (and pledge to do so upon signing their scholarship acceptance form). Band
expenses to the bowl game are covered by the bowl bid, but these games usually take place
during the holiday break. Please plan your schedule accordingly. The attendance portion of the final grade is weighted as follows:
● 3 Unexcused Rehearsal Tardies = 1 Unexcused Rehearsal Absence = lowering final grade by ½ letter

PASS-OFFS
Pass-Offs - approx. 30% of final grade
To meet the complex demands of marching and playing up to high performance standards,
students will be required to give concentrated practice outside of rehearsal time. Each
individual must take the time to be prepared in order to make a positive contribution in
rehearsal and performance. Your section and squad leaders are there to help when needed.
Students are required to prepare and memorize music and routines for performance.
Deadlines will be set for passing off music (or routines for color guard) to squad or section
leaders (see ‘Pass-Off Requirements’ below). For band members, audio recordings of each
piece should be submitted to through the app Marching Band Pro. Successfully playing from
memory (or routine performance for color guard) by these respective deadlines will be
considered passing. Not meeting these deadlines will result in an “E” grade.

PASS-OFF REQUIREMENTS
In order to ensure quality performance, every member will be required to submit recordings
of themselves playing their music. This year we are using an app called Marching Band Pro.
On the app do the following:
● Find the piece you want to pass-off and click on it ● Click “Video” (you MUST submit a video) ● Click “Record”. The video view will go away but it will still record a video. ● Once you’ve achieved your desired score, hit submit and you’re done.
Requirements for a successful pass-off:
● Play through the entire song with MINIMAL mistakes. Passing off “difficult section” separately is not an option
● Piece must be played at the appropriate tempo ● Micro-moving is helpful and will reinforce the drill we have learned ● Be aware of air support and correct embouchure ● Musicality is VITAL
Remember:
● All recordings are to be made from memory. The Honor Code applies (without it, none of this works!)
● The earlier you submit your audio recording during the one-week window for each piece, the more time your section or squad leader will have to work with you to correct
any issues or concerns. If the section or squad leader is unable to resolve these with the
band member prior to the final deadline, the recording will be sent to the directors,
who will work with the student, as necessary.
● If you don’t submit a recording by the deadline, you will receive an “E” for that pass-off. No exceptions
We understand that many of you are not used to having to pass off such a large amount of
music in such a short time. Passing off your music is nearly 30% of your grade, and you can
do it! We as directors want you to succeed, and your section and squad leaders will do
everything possible to ensure your success. However, be sure that you are also putting in your
best effort to keep up a fine tradition of excellence!

GRADING POLICY
PREPARATION
Preparation – approx. 20% of final grade
Being consistently prepared for rehearsals and performances is an individual responsibility.
This includes keeping your music well organized and with you at all rehearsals, even after you
have it memorized. Marking your music with drill cues is an invaluable tool in learning and
coordinating music and marching. The expectation for the stands (and some performances off
the field) is that all music be secured in flip folders and lyres.
Each member must also have all drill harts or coordinate sheets and a pencil at every
rehearsal (this is the purpose of the cinch bag you are given during band camp – use it!).
Bare feet, house shoes, flip-flops, sandals, or any other type of footwear not conducive to
executing proper marching fundamentals are NOT acceptable rehearsal attire – please wear
sneakers or marching shoes to all rehearsals. Also, because Provo is higher in altitude than
what many of you will be accustomed to, plan to bring water, sunscreen, and appropriate
clothing to keep yourself healthy and protected from the sun.
You are also expected to have your instrument in good working order at every rehearsal and
performance (including necessary reeds, sticks, valve oil, etc.). For performances, you must
also have your uniform (correctly worn at all times, including correct pant length/hem) and
lanyard, as well as clean white shoes, gloves, and socks.
Rehearsal and performance preparation grades are also Pass (P)/Fail (E). A failing grade
will be assigned for each rehearsal/performance during which any required equipment is
missing or not being used properly. Please talk with your section or squad leader about any
concerns you may have.

ALTERNATE POLICY
Due to potential for unforeseen sickness or other challenges, the band uses a minimal number of
alternates each year. The responsibility of an alternate is significant because he/she must be able to
perform pre-game and/or halftime whenever a vacancy occurs. Alternates are chosen based on
initial audition results, pass-offs, marching ability, and attendance. Section leaders select alternates
(in consultation with squad leaders and the directors when necessary).
Although our goal is to give every member the opportunity to perform, minimum performance
standards must be met. Section and squad leaders are responsible to assist those assigned to be
alternates so that their music and marching abilities can qualify them to perform with the band.
Students chosen as alternates are required to participate in all rehearsals and performances and
also to assist with podiums, equipment and other logistics during performances. Alternates march to
and from the stadium, perform in the stands, and at 5th quarter concerts, and travel with the band on road trips.

UNIFORM GUIDELINES
Performance Standards
Students are expected to dress in full uniform for ALL performances. With the advent of COVID-19,
the 2020 Cougar Marching Band uniform consists of the following pieces:
- Uniform polo; provided. This also acts as your ticket into the stadium.
- Uniform pants; provided. You are responsible for hemming pants. - Shorts or leggings (AT LEAST KNEE LENGTH); can be worn under uniform pants for warmth; to
be purchased at a retail store
- White socks (at least crew length); to be purchased at a retail store
- White shoes; available for purchase
- 2020 CMB baseball cap or BYU ski cap; provided
- BYU parka as needed; provided
- Instrument
You are responsible for arriving to the game in your uniform, keeping it clean, wrinkle-free, and in
good repair.

MUSIC, INSTRUMENT & EQUIPMENT POLICY
MUSIC
It is the student’s responsibility to download your music parts, print your parts and buy a flipfolder
online. Information of how to do this has been emailed to you. We recommend that the brand of flip
folder you purchase is either a Grover Trophy, Selmer, or Plastifolio. Piccolos must have DEG Flutists
Friend Marching Lyres.
INSTRUMENTS & EQUIPMENT
BYU-owned instruments and equipment are available to students of the University for use in BYU
performing groups, or for private lessons taken through the University, during regular school session
only. A person using a BYU instrument or BYU-owned equipment is expected to abide by the
following regulations. Any infraction could result in the loss of privilege to use the instrument or
equipment.
Instruments/equipment are issued in good working order. Any malfunction should be reported
immediately to the Instrument Office. The person will be responsible for the proper care and cleaning
of the instrument/equipment until it is officially checked in. The instrument must be thoroughly cleaned
before checking it back in. Cleaning facilities are available in the Instrument Office.
Normal maintenance and repairs will be done by the Instrument Office at no charge to the student.
Repairs for dents, scratches and any additional damage will be charged to the student.
BYU instruments/equipment are intended for use in BYU classes only. If you drop the class, the
instrument/equipment is to be returned to the Instrument Office immediately. Exceptional uses must be
approved in advance through the Instrument Office. (No church performances or non-BYU gigs). A
nominal fee will be assessed.
1. Instruments and accessories should never be left unattended. If an instrument Office employee
finds an instrument and/or accessory left unattended, it will be taken to the Instrument Office.
A $5.00 fine will be assessed to retrieve the abandoned instrument and/or accessory.
2. All instruments/equipment are to be checked back in to the Instrument Office on or before the
last day of regular classes of the term or semester. Any extension due to juries, finals, or bowl
game must be arranged on or before that day. The student who checked out the
instrument/equipment must personally return it to the Instrument Office by the due date. A
late fee will be charged for each instrument or piece of equipment checked in late: $2.00 the
first day and $1.00 for each additional day. If the instrument or accessory is not returned by
the last day of finals, the full replacement value will be charged to the student’s university
account in addition to a late fee.
3. When checking in an instrument, be sure to check in any accessories separately, such as mutes,
lyres, extra mouthpieces, etc. A replacement fee will be charged for any missing accessories.
4. If the instrument is a “Community Instrument,” it is used by more than one person during the
day. The instrument must be kept in the assigned locker and can only be taken from the HFAC

or stadium by making arrangements with the Instrument Office. It is the student’s responsibility
to work out practice times with other students using the instrument by filling out the Instrument
Usage Card, located in the locker. New Usage Cards can be obtained in the Instrument
Office.
5. Students should not switch instruments/equipment with other students, since the student that
originally checked out the instrument/equipment is responsible for any damage to or loss of
these items (even if stolen) until he/she officially checks it into the Instrument Office. The
student is released from further responsibility once it is checked in to the Instrument Office.
6. BYU-owned instruments/equipment may not be checked out between terms or semesters.

TRAVELING WITH THE BAND
When we travel, you represent Brigham Young University, and BYU Bands. Your conduct and
performance should be representative of those organizations, which means a higher level of
performance and behavior is expected. Unacceptable behavior reflects on the entire group and the
University and will not be tolerated. In most cases we will be traveling by bus and sleeping in a hotel.
The following items are of importance during these times:
● Everyone will sign up for a bus and must travel on that same bus for the entire trip. A staff member with a hand-held radio will be assigned to each bus and will be in charge of making
sure everyone is present after making stops.
● Be considerate of those around you and remember who you represent. BTRs and other flings should be kept within an appropriate relationship and not make others uncomfortable.
● Musical devices with headphones are permitted. ● No one may ride in a vehicle other than a University approved form of transportation for the
trip.
● Each band member is responsible for his/her own equipment, instrument, luggage (travel light, but don’t forget essentials), uniform, and personal belongings at all times. Make sure the
larger instruments are loaded on the truck – don't expect someone else to do it for you.
● Every band member is required to perform at all activities while traveling. Tardies and absences will reflect on your grade.
● Each band member will be assigned a hotel room (usually in groups of four). Sign-up sheets will be available at rehearsals. Do not switch rooms, unless you get approval from a Staff
member first. If you are staying with relatives, you must get approval well in advance before
the trip and make sure the Band Office has a record of it so they don’t assign you to a room.
● All hotel rules must be followed without exception, including excess noise. ● Never should there be any guys in girls’ rooms or girls in guys’ rooms. If you want to visit, do
so in the lobby or lounge. Infractions of this rule will result in possible expulsion from the band.
● Pay attention to curfew times on your itinerary. These must be strictly observed. Any exceptions to curfew must be approved by Bro. McInnis.
● Respect others’ property. Any damage resulting from negligence or vandalism will be paid by the responsible person.
● Upon checking out of a hotel, all members are responsible for any costs such as fees or fines that may be applied to their room (phone, movie, room service, etc.). Generally, this is not a
problem, for restrictions are placed on the rooms of band members, and items such as the
above will have to be paid in advance.
● All family members or friends visiting you on the trip must follow all of the policies expected of regular band members.
● Always leave any facility better than you found it!

● Team fans can often behave towards visitors & band members in a less than exemplary manner. Please avoid making any comments and keep your emotions under control. Always
stay with the group, and never go anywhere alone.

BOWL GAME POLICY
The culmination to an outstanding football season takes place when the University receives a bowl
invitation. Because it is a venue which showcases not only the football team, but the university, and
outstanding representation by the band is HIGHLY important. However, because bowl invitations are
not typically issued until Thanksgiving weekend – or even later – the following points should guide
your planning regarding possible bowl participation:
● All band students are expected to participate in the bowl game and it is included as one of the stipulations on our band scholarship/talent award acceptance form.
● Do not make unalterable pans during the period for bowl games (between class ending and Christmas or the time between Christmas and New Year’s). To be safe this would be up until January 7th. This includes submitting missionary papers. Your availability date should not be listed until after January – even if you don’t think that the chances look good for an
invitation when you submit them.
● Do not call the band office and expect to be given advice about purchasing airline tickets to go home for the holidays. You should make your travel plans as normal and as if there is no
bowl game.
● If we are invited to a bowl game, the University will make every effort possible to be fair with you regarding travel expenses. The principle is that the bowl travel, food, and housing
should not be a cost and burden to individual band students. But, one should not expect us to
buy you a ticket home, if you were not going to do so otherwise. This means – if you are home
on the date that we leave for a bowl game, the bowl account would normally fly you to our
destination and then return you for your normal return flight to Provo.
● As the specific conference bowl games are examined each year, we will pass along information regarding the possible dates during the latter part of the season.

BOWL GAME TRAVEL TIPS General
● Please be sure your e-mail address and your cell phone number are updated (go to myBYU...click on “Update my Personal Information,” then “Contact,” then “Mailing Address).
We must talk with you … not your parents. And please set up your voice mail account.
● Make travel plans early as if we were not going to the bowl game! (The bowl account will pay to adjust your ticket but will not pay for the entire ticket.) Plan to have your ticket
booked and flying/driving itinerary emailed no later than Rocky Mountain (October 8).
Flying
● We recommend booking directly with your airline of choice or BYU Travel at (801) 422-3872 (latter preferred). Do not use a third party provider. If you do, you will be required to pay for the change yourself.
● If you make a reservation using frequent flyer miles, you will be responsible to adjust the ticket for bowl game travel (including the cost of making the change). Airlines will not allow
BYU Travel to access or adjust these tickets in any way.
● Once booked, please send itinerary information, including confirmation numbers, to Karren in the Band Office (band-office@byu.edu). Additional information will be given at rehearsals mid-season. We need confirmation numbers so that the Travel Office can access previously
booked flights. Do not give this information to section leaders, staff members, or anyone other
than Karren.
● After booking, please send any changes or updates to Karren. Driving
● If you are driving home (or to another city) please email Karren in the Band Office (band-office@byu.edu) with your departure date and destination.
o An example would be: Leaving on Thursday, December 17 and driving to Las Vegas,
NV to spend the break with my family.

RE-AUDITION POLICY
We encourage students to seek additional performance opportunities whenever possible.
Cougar Marching Band members who participate in a large ensemble during the winter
semester do not need to re-audition for the next season of marching band. Members who do
not participate in a large ensemble during the winter semester will be required to re-audition
for the marching band for the following season.
Large ensembles that fulfill the requirement include: University Band, Wind Symphony,
Symphonic Band, University Orchestra, Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonic Orchestra and
Symphony Orchestra. Jazz and small ensembles do not qualify for this requirement.
Drumline and Color Guard
Drumline members will need to re-audition if you:
1. Want to play an instrument or in a position different from last year
AND/OR
2. Did not participate in a large ensemble
Members returning to the drumline are not automatically guaranteed their same
spot/instrument as the previous season. They are given a place in the drumline at the
discretion of the director.
Color guard members will need to re-audition during auditions in April, June, or July.
Returning Missionaries
Members that are planning to serve a full-time mission after marching band do not need to
re-audition for the season after their mission if:
1. They participated in a large ensemble during the winter semester prior to their mission
OR
2. They were not enrolled during the winter semester because they departed for a
mission

BAND BANQUET & AWARDS Due to COVID-19, it is unclear when or if the annual Band Banquet will be held for 2020.
All marching band members are encouraged to attend the closing event of the marching season. This
semi-formal end-of-the-season marching band banquet is generally held in December or January.
The banquet consists of a nice dinner and program, including video clips of the season which include
parts of rehearsals, photos, shows, and other performances. The band service award, graduate
plaques, and other awards are presented. Great food and the good company of friends round off
this nice, enjoyable evening, making it one you don’t want to miss!
Members’ admission is covered by your band dues. If you wish to bring your spouse or fiancé, please
make arrangements to pay $16 for their dinner when you RSVP. You must RSVP to order your ticket.
If you do not contact us in time, a dinner will not be ordered for you. Also, if you tell us you are
coming, please be sure to attend, since we will be paying for all dinners ordered, whether eaten or
not. Further information about dates and times will be given near the end of the season.
Band Service Awards
BYU Band Service Award Plaque: This award is presented in recognition of two years participation and service to the concert and marching bands of Brigham Young University. A plaque listing the
recipients is on display in the Band Office.
Requirements:
At least 4 semesters in BYU Bands
This must include at least:
2 semesters of an auditioned concert band
2 semesters of marching band
Exceptions:
Double reed players – at least 4 semesters of a concert band
Color Guard members – at least 3 semesters of marching band
Cougar Band Commemorative Pin: This award is given for those who have participated in the marching band for 2 years.
Cougar Band Key Chain: This award is given for those who have participated in the marching band for 3 years
Cougar Band Commemorative Blanket: This award is given to those who have participated in the marching band for 4 years.
Cougar Band Commemorative Pillow: This award is given to those who have participated in the marching band for 5 years.
Cougar Band Commemorative Shako: This award will be given to those who have participated in the marching band for 6 years

FEES & MERCHANDISE
Class Fee & Purchases
To cover members’ costs of uniforms and other expenses, a $50.00 fee is charged to each
member’s student financial account at the beginning of the semester. This covers your 2020
uniform, dinner and treats for games, and other incidental expenses. Shoes ordered during
the summer cost $37 and will be charged to your student account. Items purchased throughout
the semester (extra gloves and/or optional band jacket) will also be charged to your student
financial account.
BYU Band Jackets
Each year, Cougar Band members have the opportunity to purchase a navy blue band jacket.
These jackets have a tan embroidered BYU Bands logo and the option for your name and
section on the left chest. It is not mandatory to purchase a jacket. It is for your personal use.
We will have samples for you to see later in the semester.
Each band member will be provided with a long, hooded parka to wear during the cold
games in November that will be issued as part of the uniform.

CONCERT & ROC BANDS
We highly encourage all members of the Cougar Marching Band to continue to develop musicianship
as a member of one of our concert bands. These groups provide outstanding opportunities to grow
musically and artistically.
Additionally, the pep bands provide opportunities for performance and travel as they support our
men’s and women’s basketball teams. Don’t overlook this opportunity either.
WIND SYMPHONY
Dr. Donald L. Peterson, Director
The finest woodwind, brass, and percussion players at the University perform with the Wind
Symphony. This band has represented the University in prestigious national appearances and
throughout the world. The Wind Symphony has an extremely active concert season. The University has
a strong commitment to this ensemble as an international touring group. In 2018, they toured
Australia. Previous tours have taken them to 17 other countries. Membership is by audition only and is
open to majors and non-majors alike.
SYMPHONIC BAND
Dr. Kirt Saville, Director
This excellent band of select membership performs works from the finest in wind band literature.
There are fewer performance pressures and therefore, the Symphonic Band is well-suited to
individuals who are unable to maintain the performance schedule of the Wind Symphony.
Nevertheless, this performance organization provides the music major as well as other members from
majors across campus the opportunity to pursue the art of music while rehearsing and performing
great band repertoire. Membership is by audition only and is open to majors and non-majors alike.
UNIVERSITY BANDS
Fred K. McInnis, Director
These two non-audition ensembles meet one evening per week during the winter semester only. They
provide a great opportunity for non-majors, fall marching band members, and all interested students
to continue performing on their instrument as a member of a quality concert band.
ROC BANDS

These two 30-piece bands are highly visible at both men’s and women’s basketball games. Both
bands begin with auditions at the beginning of the fall semester, then rehearsing and performing at
the basketball games near the end of fall semester and continuing into winter semester. These select

groups are drawn from those participating in the concert and marching bands. Each member receives
a financial award for their service.
