Jackson’s Presidency*During his presidency,

Andrew Jackson became the symbol for an age in which

Americans first began to believe that elected officials

should act according to the views of voter.

*He used his veto power to keep the power of

government as inactive as possible.

The Spoils Systempatronage (Appointing friends, supports to

positions in the administration)

Andrew Jackson as president– Fired several appointees from previous

presidents– Defined the spoils system in his

Presidency– Replaced with jacksonian democrats– Gave impression he was for the common

man

The Bank of the United States• Jackson hated us bank

– Believed it started panic of 1819

• Charter ended in 1836– Supporters: Henry Clay,

Daniel Webster wanted to re-charter

• McCulloch v. Maryland– Maryland fined bank for

failure to pay state tax– Supreme court ruled in favor

of bank (Article I, Section 8)– Chief Justice John Marshall-

states can’t tax national government

• Jackson vetoed re-charter

Nullification• Tariff of 1828 (Tariff of Abominations)

– High tax on imports• Encouraged manufacturing in U.S.• Factories in north, no benefit to south who resented

supporting north through taxes– South Carolina “nullified” the taxes-threatened

secession• Did states have the right to go against congress?

• Jackson angry (ironic) urges congress to pass Force Bill– threatened to send troops to S.C– Henry Clay came up with compromise

• S. C. backs down

End of Jackson Era• Strong willed,

courageous, Quick Temper marked Jackson’s term

• End of national bank resulted in Panic of 1837 (a deep depression)

• Martin Van Buren President-2nd term defeated by William Henry Harrison

• Whigs wanted to defeat Jacksonian democrats and did-However……..

Trail of Tears• Jackson used federal

power to remove Cherokee, Choctaw, Creek, Chickasaw, & Seminole to Oklahoma

• Deeply disliked Native Americans, as did most Americans

• 1 in 4 Cherokee died on the Trail

• Cherokee-force to pay $6 million of $9 million settlement to government
